Your Theme Layer

This is my post is for the tutorial basics that uses a theme layer, I will add when needed.

To create an InsaneJournal Theme Layer

Even though I try to create free layouts for myself I tend to want to add everything under the sun, so for this to happen I need a "theme layer" and less often a "user layer" but theme layers are what gives you the extra nice stuff that you have to pay for such as order tag function and the mood to be placed of the left of metadata, which is so often what I like using in my journal.

This short tutorial is hopefully easy to follow but I can't stress enough that to create a theme layer you need to have either a paid or permanent insanejournal account.

This is for creating New Theme Layers.

Don't press any buttons below

1. Start at the Advance Customization area. Under Advanced Options, press Your Layers.
2. Under Your Layers, make sure you are working in the proper journal. So for example:

Work as account: scotchbonnetscotchbonnetscotchbonnet

3. Scroll to the bottom until you see, Create layout-specific layer
Type: ThemeLanguageUser Layout: A Sturdy GestureBloggishClassicClean and SimpleDear Diary...Variable Flow

Under Type, drop down on theme.
Under Layout, drop down on layout theme
Press Create.

4. When page refreshes, find on the list :
Child of layer ####: Name of layout you based theme on.
Ex: Child of layer 3262: Refried Paper

78921

theme

(none)

Press Edit.
5. You will see the compile area with name on top and three block of white space. In one area will have:

layerinfo "type" = "theme";
layerinfo "name" = "";

Now two things:

a. If you are using a full theme layout provide by me then erase the two line and replace this is where you will put the theme layer I provided.

b. If you using code that is needed for this layer then add a name to: layerinfo "name" = ""; such as :
layerinfo "name" = "scotchbonnet's new layout";

c. Add whatever code you need and hit Save & Compile. At the bottom of the code area you should see similiar:

S2 Compiler Output at Fri Feb 1 05:39:18 2008
Compiled with no errors.

6. Go to Journal Display, press the "Look and Feel" tab and

a. Layout & Language : scroll for your base layer
b. Themes : scroll for the name you you were given or gave to the theme layer.

(Note: you may have to save after Layout and Language then return to scroll for Theme layer.)

c. Save Changes.

7. "Your settings have been saved. View your Journal." That's should be it and go to your journal.

To make your theme layer code viewable by others.

Never give your password to anyone to get help on your layer. I repeat. Never give your password to anyone to get help on your layer.

*Below, don't not actually use any of the buttons below, they are for presentation only.*

1. Go to Your Layers and find the theme layer you wish to show to others, example:

78921

theme

(none)

Press the edit button.

2. In the Compile Area, copy and paste:

layerinfo source_viewable = 1;

below:

layerinfo "type" = "theme";
layerinfo "name" = "nameoflayer";

Save and Compile.

3. Now return to Your Layers and find the layer name you just worked on and take the number and post it to the person helping you.

Now, if your giving or they person doesn't know what to do with this shareable number you can:
a. Click on the number instead and give them a link to the layer
b. Go further, and click either on [View source: Raw Source Code | Syntax Highlighted] then give them the direct link to the code in raw or pretty html color coded form.

To post code in journals.

The thing that pissed me off for the longest time was asking/write/copy snippets of code and rewriting properly for journal post. So by accident while conversing with masterslaker, creator of rounded corners of which I am using in this journal about something else, I happen to stumble upon a webpage of his where you can insert code into and it generated a modified code available for post.

Made my life easy.

How easy?

7 steps.

1. Copy or Cut the code you need transforming.
2. Go to HTML-for-LiveJournal Modification Tool
3. Paste your code into the top textarea box.
4. Press Modify HTML
5. The modified code should be visible in the bottom textarea box.
6. Copy or Cut the transformed code.
7. Paste the new code into your post, entry, comment.
8. Volia!

Adding CSS to a Theme Layer

It is easy.
How easy?
If you don't have a layer already created, go here for instructions. Otherwise, go to Advanced Customization and select the layer you wish to modify.

Put the following below the block of text that starts with layerinfo.

    ### Custom CSS
    function Page::print_custom_head() {
    """
    <style type="text/css">
    standard CSS formatting information goes here.
    }
    </style>
    """;
    }
    ### Custom CSS End

The text [standard CSS formatting information goes here.] will be replaced with the CSS you wish to use. Do not change the rest of text.

Next Update: Creating a Style
Next Update: Making your Style viewable

If you have ideas to improve, let me know.

Creating A Mood Theme

This is a quick and dirty tutorial, I'll make it nicer when I am awake. I wrote this because I am slow when reading directions and I learn better by doing. I know how to do this from my Livejournal but this tutorial is for application to an Insanejournal account.

Variation #1 Using IJ Administration Console (easier for me)

One.
Your IJ account has to be either:
1. A Early Inmate
2. Self-committed [paid]
3. Permanently Insane

Figure out which account you have? "Free" doesn't get to create.

Two.
1. Pick a subject for your moods.
2. Get your images
3. Find a image editor (I use Photoshop)
4. Crop them all to the same dimensions.
5. Find a place to upload the images. Try Photobucket.

Three.
Did you know that you only need 15 base moods?

Four.
1. Now go to the Admin Console and you will see a link for the reference section. You'll find the one for moodtheme_create < name > < desc >. Basically it's saying we are going to create a mood theme but you need to tell what's the name and the description of the mood theme.

2. I am creating a Ray Vecchio mood theme from Due South, so at Admin Console I enter:

moodtheme_create "Scotchsour's Ray Vecchio" "The Man behind the Armani."

3. Press execute.

Five.
1. You should receive a successful execution and it should look similar to this:

moodtheme_create

Scotchsour's Ray Vecchio

The Man behind the Armani

2. You should also receive a new moodthemeid = ### in green. (This will be a real number so write it down. You'll need it later. For tutorial purposes only, I'll use 534 as example.)

Six.
1. Now you'll need to assign those mood images you made to good use but first back to the reference section and you'll find the one for:
moodtheme_setpic < themeid > < moodid > < picurl > < width >

It means simply: We're going to set the picture to the mood but you need to tell us moodthemeid (the one I told you to write down), the mood number (the numbers in parentheses on moodlists) Look below for the moodlists, the full URL to the image, the exact width of the image and the exact height of the image in pixels.

Example: My moodthemeid is 534 and the image I created is angry.gif which according to the moodlist is (#2) and the dimensions of my mood is 100px/70px.

In the Admin Console I would type:

2.
moodtheme_setpic 534 2 http://www.yoursite.com/angry.gif 100 70

The reason I like this way because you can execute many images to moods quickly and efficiently, but that's just me.

Seven.
Remember I say you need only fifteen base moods. Well yeah. In total there are 132 moods you could create but if you are in a hurry you can create the basic 15 that will represent the total of moods. They are:

2 angry.gif
87 awake.gif
6 confused.gif
45 determined.gif
130 devious.gif

11 energetic.gif
13 enthralled.gif
15 happy.gif
48 indescribable.gif
102 nerdy.gif

61 okay.gif
25 sad.gif
46 scared.gif
30 thoughtful.gif
88 working.gif

Once you execute these 15 moods, go to modify journal and select your theme. Go to the "Look and Feel" tab and at the bottom check the dropdown menu until you see your mood theme. Choose and save the changes. Voila! You're done. Post tio your journal and go to the dropdown list in "options" and see your moods.

From site: When you have finished creating your mood theme, you can view it at [http://www.insanejournal.com/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=THEMEID&ownerid=OWNERID], replacing THEMEID with your mood theme ID number and OWNERID with your user ID number.
Mood Theme Instructions

I only did this for my pleasure and took a little over two years to complete the full set so now that's it is done, I thought to only share with my fellow Ray Vecchio lovers. :) I will probably create a plain jane version (sans borders) sometime next year but for now, this is what it is.

This mood theme is for outside or public use, just instructions. Use liberally.

Before Reading: Click to See + Download: Ray Vecchio Mood Theme Full Preview

Excerpt from: Acidqueen's Kirk/McCoy Theme

If you are using this mood theme with InsaneJournal, follow the directions below here: ⇓

⇒ 1. Did you go to the mood theme preview you want and pick up the zip file. Yes, continue to number #2.

⇒ 2. Unzip the file, then upload all pics to your site or a image service like Photobucket. For both, create a folder in your directory or a sub album in photobucket titled example: "rayvmoodtheme". (Check below for mini instructions on photobucket.)

⇒ 3. Open this:

Ray Vecchio: command-console.txt file

and paste it into notepad. Do a find/replace of the URLs, from this part
"http://www.yoursite.com/moods/"
to example:
"http://www.yoursite.com/rayvmoodtheme/".

It should look like this : "http://www.yoursite.com/rayvmoodtheme/se-raymood25.jpg

So it should look like this if for example (photobucket) :
"http://www.yoursite.com/moods/"
to
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/r341/yourname/rayvmoodtheme/se-raymoods25.jpg

⇒ 4. Go to the InsaneJournal Command Console. In the box, type or copy this:

moodtheme_create "Scotchsour's Ray Vecchio Mood Theme" "The Man behind the Armani."

then click "execute". You should get a box saying that your mood theme has been created.

Success. Your new moodthemeid = ###

Write down the ID# they give you (i.e. "134"), because you'll need it later.

⇒ 5. Go back to the command-console.txt file in your notepad. Do a find/replace "166595" with the ### that InsaneJournal has assigned to your mood set.

⇒ 6. CTRL-A to select all the text in your file, then copy and paste it Under: enter commands: into the console box. (No need to press again the console box link if you kept the original window open.) Press "execute". It should give you a long list of commands to show that you've been successful.

⇒ 7. To check if your mood theme has been set up correctly, go to http://www.insanejournal.com/moodlist.bml?moodtheme=166595 -- but replace "166595" with your theme's ID#. If it shows up, you know it worked!

⇒ 8. Go back to the Modify Journal page. Scroll down to "select mood icon set". Look for one named "Scotchsour's Ray Vecchio Mood Theme", and select it. Save Changes. Then refresh your InsaneJournal to see if the moods show up.

⇒ 9. Enjoy the set as much as I had spent creating it.

If you are using this theme with LiveJournal, follow the directions below here: ⇓

Do a find/replace of the URLs, from "http://www.yoursite.com/moods/" to example: "http://www.yoursite.com/rayvmoodtheme/".

⇒ 4. Go to the LiveJournal Command Console. In the box, type this:

moodtheme_create "Scotchsour's Ray Vecchio Mood Theme" "The Man behind the Armani."

then click "execute". Your new moodthemeid = ###

Write down the ID# they give you (i.e. "134"), because you'll need it later.

⇒5. Go back to the command-console.txt file. Do a find/replace "166595" with the # that LiveJournal assigned to your mood set.

⇒6.
