Realities and realities (now w/ an update from James Robinson's Twitter)
George Perez draws a two-page spread of the WildStorm cast o' heroes. It's slated to appear as the covers of two titles in January, I think:

Also, CBR has preview up of Justice League of America 38, one page of which is attached:

Huntress is Awesome Week: Huntress Joins the JLA
Someone posted a line here once about Huntress that cracked me up (please claim it if it's yours) "She's so crazy, she's Batman's Batman." Crazy Huntress is an image that's she had (and at times deserved) and still has for those not overly familiar with the character. (i.e. BFTC "The Network") Here's a look at a time in the early part of Helena's career showing just how awesome, competent and uncrazy she could be. From the September 1999 issue of Justice League of America are 7 pages telling how she joined the JLA.

killer penguins: a proud JLA tradition
So, recently maslego posted a battle from Blue Beetle where Jaime and Guy fight a flock of killer penguins.

but this isn't actually the first time in the modern era where the JLA went up against these deadly swarming nightmares of the Antarctic. 11 Pages under cut )

Blue Beetle Hits On Unknown Man. Hee.
Photobucket

Published in 1992. It's quite possible this expression was used on purpose, but... Context for the weak, y'all. And this scene is so much more fun without context.

Just how strong IS Green Arrow anyway?
Just a few panels from JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA# 5, with the usual Gardner Fox appproach of giving kids exciting, colorful epics that regard the laws of physics as mere suggestions.

Okay then. Green Arrow climbs out of his jet in mid-air (leaving it on auto-pilot, I suppose). Standing on the wing and not getting blown off by the 600 mph winds, he whips three fishing-hook arrows out of his quiver and fires them in close succession. Not only does he manage to snap his teammates who are falling from another plane (and look how far away they are in that first panel), he then grabs the fishing lines and lowers all three of them to the ground. He's reeling down roughly six hundred pounds of dead weight from a jet to the ground. Damn. If he can do things like that, he doesn't need a bow and arrows to fight crime.I loved Fox's stories for their imagination and outlandishness, but honestly, the guy went overboard as soon as he put paper in his typewriter...

Apparently Wein got the memo
McDuffie having gotten booted off JLA for telling it like it is, DC passed the baton to Robinson, but he was still too busy with CRY THAT THE WRITING'S SO BAD FOR JUSTICE to jump on right away, I guess, because they've got Len Wein doing a filler arc about the Royal Flush Gang.

Which I'm actually rather liking, for reasons which are probably fairly obvious under the cut.

The JLA discusses secret identities versus love
This is an oldie that keeps coming to mind when I see Batman discussed. Ray Palmer, the Atom, wants to marry his girlfriend, Jean, but he's concerned about whether the revelation would cause her another breakdown (she's had two already). He asks his friends for advice.

Continuity: They've just defeated 5 old gods who melded together. Earth 1 and 2 are separate. Black Canary is from Earth 2, having migrated when her civilian husband was killed. Red Tornado has taken in a child. Hal Jordan has been dating Carol forever. Barry Allen tried to keep his identity secret, but Iris found out anyway. The Phantom Stranger is making his exit (for once, without someone saying, "OMG WHERE DID HE GO?").

Oh, Bats.
From Justice League Adventures #20 (not my scan, by the way). The League's emotions are magnified by the Psycho Pirate. Hilarity ensues.

The Many Faces of Barbara Minerva, part 7 (Leopard Print Pants)
Well, here we are, after admittedly quite a hiatus, with the final repost of my Cheetah series. This overlaps the prior Pfeifer chapter a lot in terms of publish dates, and actually all falls before the Salvation Run stuff as far as the in-universe timeline goes, but chronologically and thematically it's more recent, it's essentially consistent with the most recent Cheetah, and being the take in JLA, it's probably the one that's going to stick with the average fan for a good while regardless of anything Gail might yet do in the Wondy title, so "current" it remains.

Which is depressing, but more in a mildly melancholy way than the frustrating VU stuff or the outright stupid Pfeifer Cheetah. Because while this Cheetah is still clearly of that same ilk, she's at least got some nuance to her beyond the mindless cardboard sociopath, and a bit of a suggestion of what she once was.

I have no further chapters to promo the way I usually do after the cut, but dedicated Cheetah fans, if there are any left after this tremendous fall from grace, may be interested in checking out the current Grand Unified Theory of Cheetahs, which achieves the extraordinary by reconciling all seven chapters of this series into a single coherent character arc by dint of massive unsupportable fanwank.

Mr. Miracle's funeral, Justice League America #40
I had a request in an earlier JLI post I did for a page of Superman and Batman talking after Mr. Miracle's funeral. Naturally, I can't just do the one page, because the whole funeral is so awesome. Six pages of a 22-page comic, plus preview (plus a few non-comic images), not my scans.

So yeah, starts out with big fight with Despero, which J'onn ends...

BTW, this seems as good a post as any to throw this out there. It didn't strike me back in the 80s because I hadn't seen the movie, but now that I've got both the first JLI trade and the Omen series box set, I'm wondering if deMatteis modeled his Max Lord on Sam Neill as the adult Damien Thorn? Check it out:

Justice League of America 32, and some comments from the writer
While looking for responses to the latest issue of JLA, I came across a compilation of Dwayne McDuffie's quotes.
