Heroes of the H-Mansion (7 of 10)

A webcomic done by Gurihiru, a Japanese artist team best known for their work on POWER PACK, it's a very irreverent take on the Marvel Universe, if the characters all lived in the same apartment building.

A giant-sized three parter, and my favorite part of the series.

(manga) Embalming--A musical interlude
It's Halloween week, so here's yet another horror-related post!

"Embalming--The Another Story of Frankenstein" takes place in an alternate Victorian era where the events in Mary Shelly's book more or less actually happened. Victor Frankenstein failed to destroy his notes, and copies of them have been distributed all over Europe. This has led various mad folk to create their own patchwork monsters, colloquially known as "Frankensteins." Most Frankensteins are homicidal maniacs, either due to the horror of the creation process, or because they weren't terribly stable to begin with.

The main heroes (at least in the part I'm posting) are Fury Flatliner, a spiky-haired fellow who hates all Frankensteins since his parents were killed by some; and Elm, a Frankenstein of superior construction quality and sanity, but stuck in the body of a loli. They quarrel frequently. In this storyline, they're investigating a series of murders in the East End, the Whitechapel neighborhood to be precise. They're joined by Inspector Abberline of Scotland Yard and Violet Kelly, a plucky orphan girl.

These scans are from the July 2009 issue of Jump Square, 8 pages of 40. I have one more story I want to show from this volume, but it's a bit more complex, so still working out which pages to scan. In the meantime, I have some stuff in (British) English I think you folks might like.

Only two this time, as the next installment will be a three part story.

Karakuri Douji Ultimo
This one is a bit tricky--while my scans are from the Japanese version which appeared in the July 2009 issue of Jump Square, the English version appeared in Shonen Jump USA just this month. So I'm going to treat it as a "recent" comic and confine myself to four scans.

As you may remember from the preview chapter of Ultimo shown on this community some time ago, "Karakuri Douji Ultimo" starts with the mad technomage Dr. Dunstan (who looks a lot like Stan Lee) creating two essentially magical robots. They are Ultimo, who is pure good, and Vice, which is pure evil. They are to battle it out to once and for all prove whether good or evil is stronger.

This installment is very similar to the previous one, but with Deadpool swapped out for Iceman.

Binbougami-ga! A bear's journey
((Okay, the images should be fixed now, so I hope you'll actually be able to enjoy what I've put so much work into.))

It's time to give back to the community that has given me so much enjoyment!

Following the cut will be most of a story from Yoshiaki Sukeno's Binbougami-ga! series appearing in Jump Square (a monthly manga anthology from the folks who bring us Shounen Jump and Shonen Jump USA.) This is from the July 2009 installment, which conveniently has two separate storylines. (14 pages from a 45-page installment, in a 700 page magazine.)

I have not seen this manga before, and my Japanese is very very weak, but here's what I've managed to gather. The girl with the headdress is the eponymous Binbougami. In Japanese folklore, a sudden downturn in your financial status is caused by the Bimbo no Kami, the god of
poverty, coming to crash at your pad for a while. While not usually depicted as particularly hostile to humans, he's a lousy houseguest. Why this spirit has been moe-fied as a flat-chested teenage girl with a hypodermic needle attached to her arm is at this time beyond me. The stuffed bear critter is Kumagai, with "kuma" being Japanese for "bear." Their archenemy is Ichiko.

That said,

If this post goes well, I may show some scans from other stories in the same issue--the "Mama wants to hug you" scene from "Embalming: The Another Tale of Frankenstein" is...interesting.

I think quite a few people have been waiting to see some of the characters that pop up in this installment.

Ohnoshark!
I was reading this manga the other day, and I feel like I just have to share.

3 pages from Junji Ito's Gyo under the cut. It might be a spoiler, although it happens fairly early on in the series. As it's manga, panels read from right to left.

Ohnoeshark! )

Neko Rahmen
While you might not want to take recipe advice from this, I figured a manga about a ramen shop run by a cat who is pretty bad at making ramen was both cracky enough for s_d and good enough for food week. Even if it's a little late for the latter.

Pluto: Character designs and story shifts.
For Alternate Universe Week! Assuming we can get more people on board for this.

And what's an alternate universe without the things that make it different from the original? Today, we're going to start off with a few scans that show off some of the characters, including new characters and redesigns, and finish off with a major plot twist that wasn't (IIRC) in the original story.

In this second part, the cast gets twice as big and 5000x cuter.

Food Week: Cakegasms
Antique Bakery. Delicious. Sinful. Decadent. Edible.

I'd like to do the punchline "and the cakes ain't bad either," but I really was talking about the cake. Not that the men aren't tasty, too. But seriously. Oh my god. Cake.

....This manga has a SCRATCH AND SNIFF COVER. It is CHOCOLATE. Now I ask you, how is that fair?

Mmmm...Jam....
Happy Canadian Thanksgiving to all my fellow canuckleheads. I hope you all enjoy your food comas. I was in the midst of mine when it occurred to me to propose a theme: FOOD WEEK. All the tasty tasty comics featuring, involving, or instructing one how to make food. How about it?

For my first contribution, I offer some lovely recipes in comic form.

Heroes of the H-Mansion (1 of 10 or so)

This webcomic has been floating around so long I'm surprised nobody ever translated it.

Done by Gurihiru, a Japanese artist team best known for their work on POWER PACK, it's a very irreverent take on the Marvel Universe, if the characters all lived in the same apartment building.

I've translated the title liberally as HEROES OF THE H-MANSION, but as with a lot of things in this project, I've taken a lot more liberties than I deserve. If there's any real groaners in here, I may well have put them in overzealously.
