I really like the classic enemies of the Teen Titans; besides trying to finish our heroes off, Deathstroke, Brother Blood, Trigon etc. have something else in common: good use of grammar. In New Teen Titans #24 (1982) we meet Lord Damyn, who not only has his own grammar rules, but also a very special humour and sense of beauty. I originally intended to this post back in the Martial Arts week a few weeks back, but then I was snared by the simple awesomeness of Batman: Arkham Asylum, after which I had to return to work with my vacation having ended. So this post kind of simmered away, but I still kind of wanted to do it due to several discussions I have had and read on the subject, so here it is finally happening. Someone who has just done me a brilliant sketchcard (which you'll see soon enough, believe me it's a thing of utter beauty) mentioned he'd like to see a sample of the "Robin goes back to the circus" stories that we've posted here and on S_D 1.0, so this repost from there is for Sonny, a thoroughly nice guy who I hope will see fit to join us here if he's interested. I know that when he was in the Titans Dick got used to be carried through the air by Starfire, but honestly.... It's a purely fun blast from the past from DC Comics Presents #31, written by Gerry Conway and drawn by Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez with inks from Dick Giordano (Always a killer combination for classic DC characters) - Where Superman hoists an elephant, Robin battles a half-and-half hermaphrodite and Jimmy and Lois show why Clark really IS the brains of the Daily Planet's star trio. A few of the scans aren't the greatest quality because it's an old, old comic now! ( The Deadliest Show on Earth! ) Not so much "Not Dial-up friendly" but "Actively dial-up hostile". Best known for his work on Thor, Starslammers, Fantastic Four, Battlestar Galactica and Orion, Simonson’s style has always been lauded as having the energy to rival Jack Kirby’s. But just as his legendary predecessor’s work was seen, all of the subtlety in Simonson’s work is often overlooked. Even in the most frantic piece, Simonson manages give it a quiet sense of characterization. Hell, he just draws purty, OK? Since I can easily make thirty different posts based on his covers alone, I’ve posted some of my personal favorite comics and covers by Simonson. No writing or art credits on the issue, but it looks like Kurt Schaffenberger to me. ( Frankly, context isn't much of a help here... ) I love it when Clark winks at the fourth wall like that.
