Superman & the Creeper
Showcase cover

Superman teams up with everyone's favorite Ditko loon, the Creeper, in this Crisis cross-over issue of DC Comics Presents (#88, Dec. 1985). Written by Steve Englehart and inked by Karl Kesel (cover inked by Giordano), this issue shows Giffen at his finest.
Team ups... YAY! )

Supplementary Tomorrow Woman post
Aside from what I've shown of Tomorrow Woman in my previous (not so mega) mega post

http://asylums.insanejournal.com/scans_daily/53647.html#cutid1

She's made two more cameo appearances that I hadn't included in my original post, one most people might have seen since it was in 52 but another that was in a much less known little story

Just a little going away post for SD since I'm going on vacation to visit my family in Greece for a month tomorrow afternoon.. Nothing like Tomorrow.

Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1 - "Dammit."
In the Computo post down the page, [info]crinosg requested a look at pre-Crisis Duo Damsel's more seriously handled reaction to the death of her third body.

That's in Legion of Super-Heroes Annual #1, in which Brainiac 5 uses the Computo technology in an attempt to help a comatose little girl, Danielle Foccart. Results: Predictable - Computo gets loose and takes control of LOSH's all-automated headquarters, whose systems begin attacking the Legionnaires - and locking out any potential help. One page, not my scan.

Cookout at Scott and Barda's

Many of you probably spent the 4th at cookouts. I hope it was better than the cookout that Scott and Barda Free had a few years ago. How bad? Well, the Joker shows up. Hey, this is my first post so I hope I didn't screw it up.

Vic and Cigarettes, not good friends.
So, I've had a bit of a crazy week, which is why my next It's Not About The Answers post has been delayed, but two things that kind of slipped in struck me. The first is that I started smoking again because this has been a crazy week, and I needed it. The second is I started reading 52 because I hadn't bothered with the parts that don't involve Vic and Renee before.

I'll hopefully get the Blue Beetle #5-7 post done before this week's up. Things are lining up weirdly and I don't have nearly as much downtime as the vacation gave me, but we'll see.

Mr. Miracle's funeral, Justice League America #40
I had a request in an earlier JLI post I did for a page of Superman and Batman talking after Mr. Miracle's funeral. Naturally, I can't just do the one page, because the whole funeral is so awesome. Six pages of a 22-page comic, plus preview (plus a few non-comic images), not my scans.

So yeah, starts out with big fight with Despero, which J'onn ends...

BTW, this seems as good a post as any to throw this out there. It didn't strike me back in the 80s because I hadn't seen the movie, but now that I've got both the first JLI trade and the Omen series box set, I'm wondering if deMatteis modeled his Max Lord on Sam Neill as the adult Damien Thorn? Check it out:

Why I Love Guy Gardner
There are some people who prefer Hal Jordan. Others who prefer Kyle Rayner. Yet others with great affection for John Stewart or Ruffles the Rage Kitty. But they're not me. Because I like a different GL.

How Many Villains Have Done This Much Damage to the Justice League?
Not long ago, [info]bluejaybirdie suggested a Huntress is Awesome Week, and I, along with [info]chengar  and [info]scottyquick  , agreed that was a good idea. Since then, though, there has been little follow-up. As such, I have decided to act unilaterally in kicking off Huntress is Awesome Week.

So I decided to start with a few scans of Huntress shooting and critically wounding a few Justice Leaguers.

Three Perfect Moments: the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, and MJ Watson
I see that no one has posted a One Perfect Moment for the Silvery Scion of Zenn-La -- the Sentinel of the Spaceways himself -- that being the divine Silver Surfer.

I am here to remedy this tragic oversight.

I'm going to actually go out on a limb here and say that the Perfect Moments contained in this post are going to have the most beautiful art and writing of any Perfect Moments posted this week. Oh yeah, I went there.

So, the first scans that this post contains, in one seven-page sequence, not one but THREE Perfect Moments for the Silver Surfer, Spider-Man, and MJ.

These first scans come from Silver Surfer: Requiem, that being an out of continuity miniseries that was scribed by J. Michael Straczynski in 2006. It is without a doubt one of the most beautiful things ever to appear in the medium of superhero comics; Esad Ribic did the luscious yet simultaneously subdued and highly evocative art, and it perfectly complemented the tragedy of this story. In fact, my understanding is that Ribic painted each and every panel.

I warn you: this story is sad and extraordinarily beautiful. JMS obviously has a huge love for Surfer, and it shows. I don't know anyone who has read SS: Requiem who didn't wind up literally sobbing their eyes out by the end.

Fans of the Spider marriage take note: in retrospect, I have to wonder if JMS knew that Marvel editorial was on their way to ending the Spider marriage when JMS wrote this Surfer mini, because in the context of OMD, the scene I'm posting here reads like a big affirmation of Peter and MJ's marriage and a "f**k you" to the group of people at Marvel that ended it.

Herein are Three Perfect Moments: a One Perfect Moment for the Silver Surfer, a One Perfect Moment for Peter, and a One Perfect Moment for MJ. Actually, let's add another one: it's a One Perfect Moment for Peter and MJ's marriage, too.

Context: Norrin Radd is dying. In this scene, while he's saying his good-byes to Earth before he returns to Zenn-La for his final days, he runs into Peter, and they have a talk.

Norrin wants to give a gift to Earth before he leaves.

And so he does. Oh, boy, he does.

That is what it means to be the Silver Surfer.

But no One Perfect Moment Post is complete without showing one of the most important figures in Norrin's history, that being of course the Ravager of Worlds.

These next scans are from Annihilation: Silver Surfer. One of the few things that the previous iteration of Scans Daily seemed to universally agree upon was that Marvel's Annihilation crossover was absolutely superbly executed in terms of art, writing, continuity, plot, and pacing.

The Annihilation: Silver Surfer miniseries contained what is perhaps the very best scene between Surfer and Galactus that I've ever read.

Context: shit is hitting the fan all over the universe to the point that Galactus is worried. Norrin finds Galactus to ask for his help (!!!), and the following exchange occurs. It culminates in a page of pure distilled AWESOME.

...Yeah, that is freakin' iconic and flat out the essence of what makes both Galactus and Surfer such great characters. Like the above scans from SS: Requiem, it's a perfect alchemy of art and writing.

As if that last page weren't enough, you want to know what happens next? This.

Beat THAT, Scans Daily!

The first set of scans are from Silver Surfer: Requiem #2 with JMS on writing duties and Esad Ribic on art. The second set of scans are from Annihilation: Silver Surfer #3 with Keith Giffen writing and Renato Arlem handling the art.

Barda and Scott - Moving Day!
This is a very special story to me. Well, not really, but it is where I got my icon from.

Around the time of the Bwa-Ha-Ha League, Keith Giffen actually managed to get the greenlight on what was basically a sitcom revolving around Mr. Miracle and Big Barda, who were trying to lead a simple suburban life, complicated enormously by the fact that they were superheroes. Booster Gold and Blue Beetle stopped over, their neighbors got suspicious, there were the Robot Beatles (not robotic beetles, mind you)... fun stuff. It's not quite as good as Jack Kirby's characterizations, IMHO, but it's very hard to dislike. I mean, just look at 'em.

In today's installment, our intrepid heroes (and Oberon) are moving out of the suburbs to the big city. That's right, it's Moving Day (what can I say, Giffen likes this plot). As always, disaster, flirtiness, and banter ensue.

Batman/Green Lantern SHOWDOWN!
Long ago (back on Apr. 17 in fact) [info]scannertastic requested scans of the epic confrontation between Batman and Green Lantern. I just realized those pages are in the JLI trade I just got a week or two ago, and it's the perfect chance to try out the scan function on my new(ish) all-in-one. Soooo, from Justice League International #5, Sept. 1987, 3 pages plus preview image.
