I know Marvel Comics has never been that accurate with its mythology . . . but damnit. Sif is supposed to be wearing a golden wig.

. . .

Never mind me I'll just go read my Bullfinch's Mythology and nursing that chip on my shoulder.

Apparantly, Marvel Sif did have golden hair, but it tarnished and turned black for some reason.

It has something to do with Hela, but I don't remember exactly what it was. Maybe she was jealous of her or something? Either way, there's an in story explanation. Volksjager or someone can probably bring us up to speed.

...Who (as explained below) had ALREADY been punished for messing with her hair and being forced to restore it!

But, since it was made of Dwarf-Metal the second time around...I dunno, it rusted?

Loki himself is meant to have red hair - he is periodically referred to as "Red-Hair Loki" in the legends for being God of Fire...

I seem to recall that the whole "God of Fire" thing was a discredited (or at least unsubstantiated) theory based on a supposed etymological link between the name "Loki" and the word "låga"/"Lohe" ("flame" in Swedish/German, respectively), while in fact it's more likely to have something to do with a word meaning "sky".

In any case, Loki was never worshipped, so he was not a god in the sense used by scholars of comparative religion.

I do believe Loke is occasionally associated with volcanoes. (something about "The fires of the earth") but I don't think he's ever associated with regular old flames.

Except I clearly recall a folktale where Loki is worshipped and revered by an old couple whose son he saves from a giant, where Odin and Thor could not save him - not out of any sympathy, but out of a love of mischief.

Yes, you're right, though the Loka Táttur is a very late ballad (it wasn't collected until the 19th Century, some 800 years after the Norse were converted to Christianity). My references are pretty adamant that there was no cult of Loki (one book says it's the one thing all scholars agree on). Of course, the evidence is pretty limited, and religious beliefs and practices certainly varied greatly across the Germanic world and the centuries of paganism, so I suppose anything is possible.

As for volcanoes, arilou_skiff, are you sure you're not thinking of earthquakes?

Now does anyone happen to recall why this artistic decision was made? Jack wanted to draw a brunette? Too many blondes in the cast already? What?

In both Marvel continuity and the Skáldskaparmál Loki shaves Sif's hair as a prank. After he gets in trouble he promises to have a headpiece made of gold to replace it.

The dwarves make this for Loki and Sif in the Skáldskaparmál. In Marvel continuity, Loki made the deal with trolls and the trolls cursed the hair that if Loki reneged on the terms of the contract with them, it would turn black. Loki stole the hair replacement without paying and now Sif's hair is black.

Because Sif was so vain and whining and crying about her hair colour change, her parents got sick of her and sent her off to be a warrior instead of the actual Godess of farming and fertility she is in the Norse legends.

Aka the female version of Kyle XY (to those who know that show). I can see the resemblence but this is the movies, with Thor it's either going to be a great film or another Fantastic Four.

Jessica Alba crap. I'm sure the CGI will be great and the cringe factor will be as well. Odds are not in its favor. For every good Iron Man there's been two lousy Fantastic Fours (they even made the same Hulk movie twice and that was with Ang Lee directing the first one).

Has the right sort of face (though I'll be interested to see what they do with Sif and Jane, given the rather significant star power differential).

Big fan of Feore's work since Trudeau (though that was a rare hero part; usually he's a villain). Be interested to know who he's playing; he's a schemer-type, generally.

Either Loki undergoes a transformation at some point (maybe with Hiddleston playing young Loki and Feore playing Older Loki), or my money's on Malekith for Feore. Seems to be about the only member of Thor's rogues' gallery that Feore would fit and would be likely to show up (because I just can't imagine Marvel Studios going with the time travel thing and bringing in Zarrko the Tomorrow Man).
