That sound you just heard was a hammer knocking the final nail into the coffin of the 1985 Byrne post-Crisis revamp. Only in the official DCU canon. In my own personal canon of awesome, it remains firmly in its place. Frankly, this story just doesn't have it. It lacks charm, which is too bad, because Geoff Johns can be great at writing charming stuff. (See: Justice Society of America's Intro to the KC Arc and Superman's Up, Up, and Away.)
Though I have to admit that I probably wouldn't like this story better than its predecessors, anyway, since the art is horrendous. Why the heck can't DC hire artists that can actually draw well? I could find about two hundred non-professional artists on deviantart that could do better than this, which is just sad.
