So is everyone convinced this is Jason?

Also wow... book still looks purdy.

Nah, I don't think it is . . . or, anyway, I hope it's not. Jason needs to take a rest, imo. Using him again this early would be rehashing the same conflicts of BftC, etc., which would be bad for Jay's character and hella boring to boot . . .

I'm not certain personally. The dialogue and the twin guns feel a lot like Jason, but I'm actually leaning towards the Joker. Morrison said that he had a new angle to explore the character and that he would return to the Joker soon enough, the Red Hood does directly connect with the Clown Prince of Crime, Professor Pyg's carnival had certain familiar elements and it just feels like the Joker. I can't explain that last part. Could be Jason, but I'm extremely doubtful it's anyone new.

Really? The Joker.... I dunno. I mean, he's crazy, but still...

Plus the Joker's Red Hood days were actually prior to his chemical bath. He's too attention-loving, spotlight whore to cover up himself with a hood nowadays.

Plus the whole "punishment fits the crime" is more like the vigilante who kills Jason style.
No way the Joker would kill someone for killing. He would just thoroughly encourage more killing.

After the Joker we got during Batman: RIP... I can see him pull this off.

I could see it being the joker. The Joker recently and successfully pretended to be the magician during the Batman story arc with Zatanna, and last we saw him he took another bath.

With the Joker, anything is possible.

And the Joker would play a role in a new guise so long as the "long con" played out.

Anyone else who we haven't seen in a while? Uses guns?

Yeah, but consider this. What does the man who redefines himself based on the times and his arch-enemy's style do when his arch enemy is gone? Given Morrison's explanation of the various different Jokers that have appeared in continuity over the years, it makes sense that Morrison might, in the former Batman's absence, have Joker become a vigilante of sorts who uses an old guise of his in a new way.

I remember reading somewhere that at one point Geoff Johns intended to write the Jason we got back as the Jason of some alternate Earth that would've been trained by Deathstroke. Wouldn't it be nice if we could blame OOCness on that?

Yeah... I have to say, I kinda prefer the sarcastic show-off vigilante who kills.. rather than what Tony Daniels wrote.

It's interesting, a friend said to me, Jason represents the frustration fans feel re: the Joker immunity problem and Batman not killing the Joker for good. And it seems like more and more he's starting to embody a whole other kind of frustration.
This whole Rape the Dog trope that's going on here: Really -- how much crap has the kid gone through?

And now this "secret" that he may have been potentially sexually abused or something equally horrific? And yet, it seems like DC doesn't want us to feel any pity for him, but only hate and detest.

Except... I don't think it's working, DC!

I don't think so. I don't know if they want to make it too obvious (and Jason would be too obvious since he's obviously done this before). Has Morrison written Jason to any great extent? I can't remember that being the case. And it would just be like Morrison to dig out some obscure Silver Age character who only appeared in one comic in the 1960s to make the Red Hood (similar to how he re-introduced the Batmen of Many Nations).

I really would like Jason to play a part in Bruce's return though. It might be a redemptive arc for him (except for Tony Daniel & Co as seeing him as totally evil now). Outside of maybe Cass, Jason has been the child who would have regarded Bruce as his parental figure the most. Dick had the Graysons, Tim had the Drakes, Jason had an absent father and a mother who betrayed him.

Dick didn't have the Graysons. He was raised by Bruce. Of course he regards him as a parental figure. They all relate to him as a father in different ways. Dick's just the oldest so teh one who's made the transition to adult parent/child relationship.

Dick did indeed have the Graysons until they all died when he was a teenager. He had a loving family long before Bruce. Tim, I'm not sure. But Jason was definitely raised by the streets, if anything.

That's what I think. Jason's history as Red Hood/Bad Batman is being used as a red herring here for something else. What, I don't know.

OTOH, if it is Jason, I think it could still work - because I don't see Jason dropping out of the game completely at this point. (Unless Morrison is just going to abandon Jay's characterization as of the end of BftC, which...well, Morrison.)

True dat about Jason self-identifying as family - even to the point, early on, of telling Bats if he failed the "Robin Test" he insisted on taking he'd go back to living quietly in the mansion "and be proud to call myself Bruce Wayne's son." (I think that's the line, or close.) He did have a loving relationship with a stepmother, who he nursed through (possibly drug-related) illness and death prior to meeting Bats, but what's that but another abandonment?

If this happens, your beef will not be with Morrison but whichever editor approved/mandated BfMM as a "bridge series" to "lead into" Batman Reborn. Yes, Battle will in that case be the new Countdown - an unneccessary story that makes the product it's tying into worse, that no one wanted told (least of all the writers following up on it), all for the purpose of DC squeezing their fans for a few extra dollars.

Batshit insane speculation about a book I can't stand.

The Red Hood drops a card.
The Card has an image similar to the symbol used to represent The Black Glove, and reads "his red right hand".
Whoever this is, there's a link to the Black Glove.
Morrison told us that Dr. Hurt, the head of the Black Glove, is literally The Devil Incarnate, Satan Himself.
If this Red Hood is Jason, it's possible Morrison is using a link to the devil to provide an explanation for Jason's return (a better one than "Superboy Prime punched time")

If it turns out that Battle for More Moneythe Cowl is going to be the new Countdown I will be sad. So here's hoping it's not Jason.

According to a quick wikipedia search, his red right hand is a line from Milton's Paradise lost- alas, it did not provide the context. But context is for the weak, and it bolsters your theory anyways.

God, I hope so. Even with the godawful outfit, it sounds like classic!Jay from back when Winick wrote him and that's definitely how I like my Jason. I did think about the Joker angle, as they have a lot of the same little mannerisms, but the Joker would have needed to have buffed out like whoa and it's more likely it's Jason. Everyone said Red Robin wouldn't be Tim because it's too obvious. Batman wouldn't be Dick because he's done it before. Yet, both of those happened and it's been said Jason was getting a sidekick. All roads point to the Jaybird, but if not, I'm definitely still interested to see who is under it.

Though did Scarlett just go from wilting flower last issue to badass in .3 seconds or what?

Mottoing everything you said here.

And yeah... tho Scarlett did kick some Pyg butt in ish #3 when she threw something flaming in his face.

OMG, yes, this outfit is... very Punisher inspired. But maybe if it is Jay, then he can break the 4th wall and knows all about Frank. Ummm... yeaaaah. Why can't they go back to the leather?

Also, like I said above, this Red Hood saved a young girl from being physically abused (for the most part, I mean she was in a hospital by that time, but the guards misunderstood and thought she was trying to kill her father, when she was trying to remove the Doll mask). And isn't that one of Jason's things -- rescuing/helping abused women?
