The book mentions that he used skeletal remains and that "the dissecting room and the slaughter-house furnished many of my materials", but otherwise the details and instant of the monster's creation are pretty glossed over.
It's not surprising that modern visual adaptations have felt the need to expand on it. "Oh hey, it's alive" just doesn't have the same ring. :)
