Lee Garbett's version of Steph's costume
Just so's everyone can see it. This is the costume we'll be seeing in the interiors and (IMO) it looks a lot less like stripey pajamas and is pretty neat. Also, various comments from Garbett about the costume:

Lee's design:

and:

I really like the darker purple and the stripes look more like stretchy...armor...cool stuff...here. I'm also really fond of the boots and the light yellow detail that complements Steph's hair. I also like the riff on the Spoiler legband and it looks a lot less bulky in this design. Apparently those are NOT pouches, according to Garbett:

The leg-strap was requested by DC as a nod to the old SPOILER costume. In fact I've kept it almost identical to the old one but now in Batgirl yellow but more techy than pouches. The same with her Belt. Other artists down the line may draw pouches but I'm going for more old skool 'containers'. Almost like the Batman TV show, I guess.

My only real problem is with the belt. It's so low slung it looks like it would interfere with Steph's kicking and whatnot, and I have no idea what that silver thing on the side is (a staff?) but it looks to make the whole deal even more restrictive.

Garbett has some words on that too, though:

The lower slung belt was inspired by Han Solo and it won't ever be a problem with her
kicking etc etc because I will make sure I draw it not being a problem with her kicking. As it's not real we can have some artistic license and add some cool elements.

So I guess I can live with that. Low slung belts do look cool, I'll admit it.

Overall, I like it. It's really fun looking and therefore very "Steph". I really like that elements of her Spoiler costume were incorporated, that's what they should have done with her Robin costume. When it was described as "sexy" by Miller at the con, I was a little worried the costume would turn out all gratuitous and impractical, but also pretty convinced that Garbett wasn't that kind of artist and I was proven right, thank the comic book gods.

Here's another comment Garbett's made that might be of interest, regarding the color scheme:

I'm not sure on the color scheme Phil's used but yeah, my original design is two tone purple to ref Spoiler's old look
.

You can see all these nice tidbits on his blog. It's pretty neat, and Garbett seems to be a great guy, so I encourage you to check it out and give your input!

Babs and Charlie are just going to be supporting characters. Babs was a supporting character in Cass's title too.

That's why they canceled BoP?

I think they canceled it to make her Batgirl, realized how stupid that was, then decided to make her a supporting character.

Either way, if the series does good it'll just make Didio think he was right in getting rid of Cass.

No it won't. Didio's already proved her doesn't think like that with the Batgirl mini. If the series fails, he'll just think he should have put Babs in the cowl. If the series does good, he'll think Steph is viable. If the series experiences an upswing in sales in the issues Cass appears in and a lot of people ask about Cass- he'll think she's viable too.

I don't know how you can be so optimistic, but Cass as Batgirl has been ruined since Beechen got a hold of the character.

THERE IS NO GOING BACK. Too many readers see Cass as a bad character now. Either she's boring, a stereotype or a hypocrite. Only fans of her old series know the truth.

But DC's not going to invest any more time into "fixing" her. The damage has been done. They don't care about her, especially since the current big name writers have no interest in her.

Cass is a toxic character right now, especially as Batgirl. Whatever charm she had when she was Batgirl is gone now. I hope she never goes back to being Batgirl. It would be a step backward for her now. I can only hope that when she does come back she'll be her own hero and will be written according to her initial characterization.

What i want is for DC to find someone who gives a damn and will write her as the wonderful character she used to be...WITHOUT putting her in the Batgirl costume. Because then DC will realize that Cass's success is not solely due to her wearing the bat crest, but due to her being AN AWESOME CHARACTER...a character that is NOT written by Beechen.

It's too late for DC to think they were right about getting rid of Cass. They have thought so since they let Beechen get a hold of her TWICE. That should've clued some of us in that they DON'T care about her character. If they had had faith in Cass's character, they would NOT have let her get changed the way she did by Beechen. But they did.

So really, this new Batgirl series doing good or bad, won't have ANY affect whatsoever on their opinion on Cass. They simply do NOT want Cass anymore.

Most people know she's been written OOC OYL. It's not like her series was that long ago.

Except, not many people...(other DCU readers) read her series. O_o It didn't help that after a while Cass stopped making appearances in the Batman titles. (hell, did she even show up once during the Hush stories?) Really, a lot of people don't know that she's out of character in OYL.

So what you're saying is that twenty years from Geoff Johns' successor will make Cass the lynchpin of the DCU? I don't know how I feel about that.

:p

*holds up hand* Sorry, sorry! Speak non-comic book fan language to me please! Contrary to popular belief, I don't keep track of everything in the DCU, so I'm afraid I don't know what you're referencing. ^^;

Hehe. My understanding, which is incomplete as I avoid his work, is that Johns, who is basically DC's main writer at the moment, is taking all the characters he thought were awesome back when he was a kid, resurrecting them/reverting them back to the status quo ante adulthood and then making them, like, the center of the epic mega events such as Blackest Night.

ohhh, in that case...YES, DAMNIT! 20 years from now Cass will be cool again! If not be back and badass if only for one event. Heck, I'll hold Nevermore to it!

Hush now. I clearly said "think", and they were the ones saying "We might bring back Babsgirl" at the Source, Lee Garbett said they got a late start because they started after the book was announced, and her miniseries was called "Oracle: THE CURE".

See, my issue with rumors is that the average human being is dumb as fuck. My issue with your statement of fact "They cancelled BoP to put [Barbara] in [Batgirl]" is that some people are going to believe you. If you're going to speculate, put the "I think" at the start, not only after you get called on it.

I don't think they canceled a series selling over 20k a month where the main character was a major character in the Batverse at the same time as Nightwing and Robin because of sales.

20k is pretty poor for even a fringe title with X, Bat or Spider in the name. BoP was selling above 20k - barely*. If you are either of the Big Two, it's not like you're losing money by printing it, but it's enough to warrant a change. Housecleaning with Batman RIP, relaunching as something else.
But anyway, it seems we are discussing two separate things. Bottom line is I take offense with the way you're stating "They cancelled BoP to get Barbara on Batgirl" and following with "I think they wanted her to be Batgirl, why else cancel the book?". It makes it seem like the two are related and you're stating a fact. Sorry if I was rude, but please don't pass around rumors as fact without a trustworthy source.

*I almost tripped myself up by not citing a source. Here is a sales chart for feb 09, the second to last issue of BoP. It has month-to-month and yearly comparisions.

Puh-lease, they had that shit clearly foreshadowed. Then they put out the Oracle mini just as a red herring? Hardly. It has all the signs of a last-minute editorial decision.
And quit being a jerk to other members. "Cite a source or shut up" isn't civil discourse.
