He's got dark hair, blue eyes, fantastic legs and shows a whole lot of skin... who could THAT be? :) Now anyone who has been reading my posts would start to think that I was obsessively interest in the heroic career of young Mr Grayson of Gotham City to the exclusion of all others... This is, of course, far from the truth. I am attracted to well toned, blue eyed, dark haired heroes who are very confident in their masculinity without the need for macho posturing. (And another coincidence here is that they have similar looking little brother's (adopted or actual) who followed in their footsteps!)
But such heroes only come along every... oh, let's say a thousand years! Good thing for me we have the Legion of Superheroes!

This is my latest commission, from Jeff Moy, long time artist on the post Zero Hour Legion (amongst others), but this is Cosmic Boy in his Mike Grell (and not Dave Cockrum as I first thought) designed "boy-basque" from the 1970's and early 80's so, yes, anything that's not shaded black or a rectangle is exposed skin... Isn't he cute? :) (That must be some serious nipple restraining material in the fabric though, OUCH! Or maybe Braalian males don't HAVE nipples)
Oh, and for those who were wondering about the absence of a flight ring, that era's Legion could make theirs invisible if they wanted to (It meant that if an artist forgot to draw a flight ring, it could be explained away)
And as a surprise bonus, Mr Moy threw in a signed copy of a print he and long time inker CW Carani had done some time ago. Featuring... deep breath... left to right, back to front; Sensor, Chameleon, Spark, Cosmic Boy, Triad (all three of her), M'onel, Star Boy, Brainiac 5, Andromeda, Umbra, Lightning Lad, Invisible Kid, Ultra Boy, Apparition, XS, Saturn Girl, Kid Quantum, Kinetix and Shrinking Violet!

In my version of things, Gates WOULD have been there, but ported out when he realised that this was going to be used to promote "the teenage death squad" he'd been assigned to!
I've loved Jeff's style for a long time, and a while back he did a rather nice Robin and Ivy sketch for me, so it was nice to add a couple more to the collection.
Enjoy!

So by the 30th century, we've achieved stripperific costume equality. Good to know.
I dunno... Jeka runs around naked (unless you count the mechano-arm thing, but she didn't have it until she joined up), and none of the boys do, so there's still some imbalance there. And you can't even say it's cuz she's an alien, because Gates gets clothes too. (Though I suppose Reep is probably technically naked too, but unlike Jeka, he doesn't look it.)
Well, you know what they say: if you don't like something about the Legion of Super-Heroes, wait five minutes... there'll be a reboot.
But post-ZH was so much fun. ;_;

Note though, that when Jeka created a human illusion around herself, she always made sure it was clothed, so I'm sure it was a cultural choice rather than herpetophile fanservice.
Oh heck yeah. That costume was current at the same time as the Mancorset.
I am a big fan of that costume. A very big fan.
This x infinity. So much.
dark hair, blue eyes, fantastic legs and shows a whole lot of skin...
Only one of my dark-haired, blue-eyed with fantastic legs shows a whole lot of skin.
Rokk's a little short and slender for my tastes -- I know, I know, we've been over this before. But I have so much love for that costume that I had to icon a Grell panel with some metacommentary for this occasion.
I...what? I thought the OP was kidding. Oh God, your icon.
Yup. For a good period of time, Cosmic Boy went around in shortpants and a corset. In SPACE!!!
What books do I need to buy to get this? I mean, I think I need this. For science.

I would NEVER kid about such a thing! :)
Oh, my. Well-toned, blue-eyed, dark-haired and very very intense! And also smooth!

If they all look like that at home, frankly I don't care if they evolved from triffids (Though I might strictly insist on a "No tongues" rule!) :)

One small amendment: that costume for Cosmic Boy was designed by Mike Grell, not Dave Cockrum. Sorry, but it drives me bonkers when I see the work of one attributed to the other.

Is there a site anywhere which mentions who redesigned which, as Cockrum did do a number of them.

I can't find a comprehensive list, but there's a bit of discussion here: http://dcboards.warnerbros.com/web/thread.jspa?messageID=2005203311...including specific quotes about Cosmic Boy. You'd really think someone would create a site devoted to this, wouldn't you? I should also add that there was widespread discussion among LSH fandom back when this costume was introduced* as to whether it might actually be made of metal fabric and held on by Rokk's magnetic powers, hence its peculiar adhensive nature. * I am so very old.
I am positive there was a lettercol reply or an 'Ask the Answer Man' column that stated there were metallic threads in the costume that Cos latched onto with his powers to keep it on. I could not tell you what issue to save my life, but I know I read it.

I liked that the post Zero Hour Cosmic Kept the four circle pattern on his chest, which had been part of several designes of his costume, but made them metallic, and he sometimes used them as magnetically directed throwing weapons. To have magnetic powers and not keep a few bits of metallic metal around for emergencies seems, in retrospect, rather silly.

I'd always assumed it was 'designed' by the colorist. The only distinction between this costume and the one worn previously was that the pink/lavender was colored as skintone. Had Grell wanted a revealing male costume he might have designed one which had a way of staying on the wearer. (Of course, this never applies to female costumes, but I'm not straight, so I won't even attempt to explain straight guy designs.

...and removed the white areas of the tunic, and the quite high collar, and the clearly defined trunks, all in favour of showing more skin than anyone else on the team bar Swimsuit Girl.. I mean Saturn Girl!
I'd say that the shift from "conservative full body suit" to "member of the Brallian Floor Show team for midnight screenings of "The Rocky Horror Hologram Show" qualifies as a fairly significant redesign.
Oh great, now I want to see the Cos picture above with him wearing a feather boa! :)

In early Grell (I may still have the issues), if you look carefully, you see that someone took out the line where the collar usually would have been.
*sighs wistfully at group pic* Those were the days.

Indeed they were.... Good times... :)
OMG, those thighs. (The Poison Ivy/Robin is very pretty, too, but my god. Those are some of the most perfectly drawn thighs I think I've ever seen.)
What a great surprise to get the print, too! Nice!
Huh. So this is what it must feel like for women when they see a superheroine in thigh highs and boy shorts.
I just ... what? What was Grell thinking?

I'm guessing something along the lines of "Let's actually explore the notion that people might not have exactly the same dress sense in a thousand years time"? and/or "Hey, this is the 70's, let's show some SKIN"
How's this for an explanation: Rokk uses his Braalian abilities to adhere the metallic weave in his costume to his nipple piercings.
