Batman does Camelot

From JLU #9. The Shining Knight asked the JLU to help him protect Camelot from Morgaine Le Faye. King Arthur and Queen Guinevere head the welcoming committee for the heroes.

Yes, Bats, you're so sexy even the legendary Queen Guinevere is hitting on you.

In front of her husband.

And the JLU.

Damn it Guinevere, wasn't Lancelot bad enough? Or have you forgotten what that led to? Off to the nunnery with you.

I'm guessing it's before she actually does anything with Lancelot, which would be why Arthur doesn't say anything about it. Gwen has reached the point of noticing non-Arthur men, but hasn't "taken the plunge" yet.

Plus, it's an actual kid's comic.

Because he's the goddamned Batman, that's why.

Why isn't the other King Arthur here? :)

Genny also looks like she's intensely checking out the superpecs while the king is shaking forearms with Clark.

To be honest, I thought Gwen was Wondie at first. It's the tiara.

Readers would, of course, be confused by 2 King Arthurs. I am, of course, being sarcastic. Most likely, the same reason Aquaman became a joke in Superfriends: Aquaman works best in the water; they probably didn't want to shoehorn a scene of him in the water just to justify his appearance. They only had, what, 20 pages? Or was this back when they allowed a couple more pages?

Aquaman wasn't a member of the JLU.

I seem to remember him being vaguely hostile to them in his few appearances, in fact.

Well she does channel a dragon later in the issue. If that doesn't get your motor running, you need to resign your Fantasy Wizard membership post damn haste.

Ohhh! And here I was thinking it was some weird "credit to your race" thing. He's actually sensing her totem and noting her power potential. Okay, that makes a lot more sense.

While the other kids obsess about whether Betty or Veronica is hotter, or whether the Thing or the Hulk is stronger, I'll be off in the corner; trying to decide whether Batman or Capt. Kirk is the bigger "Canon Sue."

Ugh, I hate terms like that.

They get in the way of the story.

I think the terms have value, but they get abused and misused to a cringe-worthy degree.

[shrug] I enjoyed the JLI/JLU cartoons, for instance, but it's still pretty hard not to notice how Bat-centric they are much of the time. About how, at the end of the day, almost everything ends up revolving around Batman and everyone must acknowledge that he's the best of the best who's always right about everything;always in the right place at the right time.

Sure fits the criteria of a Sue to me. And I've seen people apply the term in fandom to virtually any character in a fan work who they don't know but who appears somewhat competent at what they do.

The difference between canon sue characters like Eragon and characters like Batman (who often get accused of being canon sues) is that:

a) Batman is allowed to have genuine flaws and failures
b) Batman's victories are earned rather then handed on a silver platter because the writers can't bear to see him challenged in any way.
c) Other heroic characters are allowed to second-guess and question his actions without being vilified for it.

I said it elsewhere and it bears reiterating - just because a character is very competent doesn't mean he or she is a sue (or stu)

But the flaws are supposed to be quickly excused, and the failures rarely seem to be genuine. (a)

I don't know what "challenge" would mean in a context where we know that the protagonist always wins in the end. However, he does seem to have superhuman qualities despite the constant assertion that of course he always "earns" a victory because he doesn't have superpowers-- unlike most of his peers. (b)

Maybe they don't get vilified. Much. But at the end of the day, you know it's going to turn out that Batman Is Right, and that whoever questioned him will probably have to admit this. Oh, and feel this deep bond with him, however reluctant. (c)

Fine. Maybe it's a different catch-all/archetype than "Sue/Stu." But for me, it comes closest to encapsulating the annoyance I feel just about every time I encounter the character in scenes like the one above. "Oh, tall stranger. I already want you and I can't even see your face!" Geez. Overkill, thy name is Batman.
