"A beautiful giant!"
After this, I had to post the bit where Herc takes an immediate liking to Giant-Girl in Marvel Adventures: Avengers #18.

And, just because it amuses me, Odin sure knows how to compliment the ladies, as he demonstrates (also on Giant-Girl) in MA:A #29.

That being said, WTF was up with women back then, that they said to themselves, "Hey this random animal is interested in fucking me, so I might as well go with the flow"? The only other places I know where women would react like that are fanfic or a Springer episode.

Well it was often implied they didn't have much of a say in the matter. Also uhm the Greeks had interesting views on the place of women and it shows in their myths.

Also, in at least*some* of the cases it is implied that he just used the animals as a way to get close and then resumed human form. Eg. with Danae and the golden rain he first rains in, then starts chatting with her, which seems to assume he was in human form.

One can only WONDER what Zeus transformed into for Helena...

He never slept with Helena, IIRC (she was after all his daughter, although that usually didn't stop him much) he seduced her mother in the shape of her husband though.

I think pyrotwilight meant Helena Sandsmark, the mother of Cassie "Wonder Girl" Sandsmark. IIRC, Helena said she remembered him as a very charming man, so presumably no animals or golden showers involved.

Just wondering - what is your icon taken from? I thought I'd seen all the 'Batman and Sons' stuff, but that looks unfamiliar. Has it been posted here?

I believe it's from part 2 of the family picnic story. All the younguns are playing a game involving water guns and Tim is schooling all the metas.

I've seen one of the Romantic artists paintings of a swan..er...humping Leda. Very pornographic.

The Romantics were batshit anyway (a professor of mine enjoyed scarring students with the stories behind certain paintings), so I'm not surprised they'd go for the straight up porno.

Yeah, it's often actually rape.  And the reason other people reacted badly was because they didn't want their daughter getting pregnant by premarital rape.  The "premarital" with a guy who couldn't marry them was probably the worse part for them.

And it was probably their fault, wearing a Doric chiton!

You have to wonder if this behavior by the gods was partly inspired by young women getting pregnant (oops) and, when asked who the father was, quickly said, "Ah... it was Zeus! Yes, that's it. He came in my door as a wolf and ravished me." This way she wouldn't be forced to marry the real father.

A lot of cultures have this folklore about women getting pregnant by sleeping out under the full moon, or eating taboo food or something. It might be a way to deflect blame.

There's an urban legend about a young girl who was wounded by gunfire on the outskirts of a Civil War battle. She eventually showed signs of pregnancy, even though she swore it was impossible. It seemed a bullet passed through a soldier's testicle and into her, bringing some sperm into her body. I don't know if anyone believed this or if it was a "Oh come ON!" story, but it's in several books of folklore.

I have met a person who believed that a woman somewhere swallowed tiny octopus eggs while swimming, and a baby octopus started growing in her stomach...

Wasn't the first urban legend tested by Mythbusters?

I think so, they covered the swallowing octopus eggs story, too. I used to love that show, but I don't take their results as final because they sometimes overlook possibilities.

I can see Kari telling her parents that this week they're going to be testing whether a bullet can carry sperm out of a man into a woman. Both Mr and Mrs Byron sputter and spill their coffee, and ask her if she wouldn't rather work for ANTIQUES ROADSHOW.

Ahahaha.. auhhhhhh. It's sad-funny because it's true. (And history geekish.)
