Well, to me it seems typically in fiction with growing-up-and-away arcs there are two main roles for the parents

1 - the one where they neatly aid the main character and respect their decisions (Father/daughter or mother/son, frex Martha Kent/Clark Kent on Smallville or Veronica Mars/Keith Mars on Veronica Mars)

2- the one who tries to stop them for their own safety, who the main character eventually defies and who eventually respects the main character when they succeed and starts to aid them (Mother/daughter or father/son, frex Jon Kent/Clark Kent or Polly/Diana)
