Adventure Comics #1

Does anyone else think Superman's attitude towards Lex here is a little OOC? I mean, they used to be friends when they  were kids and in Grant Morrison's JLA run Superman said that "there's a good man in there somewhere."

The issue also introduces a new character, Simon Valentine, who will apparently be Superboy's "greatest friend-- and his greatest enemy." Even before that line he reminded me a little bit of a young Lex Luthor. It'll be interesting to see what happens with him.

Also, this was on DC's main page.

Superboy-Prime!

Dear Geoff Johns:

Please give it a rest.

It gets worse if you read the preview of the new Clark Kent/Smallville origin that geoff is about to trample on...

This might be a little off topic, but am I the only one who thinks this book would be the perfect place to bring Chloe Sullivan into the DCU? I mean, she could have almost the exact same role she has in the earlier seasons of Smallville, just with Kon instead of Clark.

Interesting notion, the only problem with it that I can see being that Chloe was already more of a Lois Lane than their Lois Lane was, and I don't necessarily want to see Kon have to deal with EVERYTHING that Clark did.

Knowing about how genetics does influence how a person turns out, and how the nature/nuture debate makes seeing storylines like this where they hamfistedly play with the concept rather painful to read.

Here's the rub, while a person may be genetically predispoded to a behavior, experiences in their life have to exist for it to be triggered.

At least, according to the most recent thinking on the subject that I've had access too.

So no, yeah. Conner. Your angst is as manufactured as you are. Shut it.

This is the only story Superboy's ever going to have. Ever.
Every other story he'll ever have will stem from, be related to, or be retconed to be a part of this one.

Is it me or it Clark's bulge somewhat prominent in the first scan? I'm starting to think I see it every time they show a superhero's crotch.

While the writing leaves much to be desired, the art is gorgeous. I might just buy it for the art and play sticky note madlibs with the dialogue same way I did with Hush.

The "NEXT: Wonder*Girl! thing cracks me up. Maybe it's the ridiculously laid out good/evil itinerary in Conner's diary leading up to it.

To develop: not only is it frickin' annoying that Geoff Johns is again pushing his retcon baby down our throat - and like others have said, making it look like Kon is never going to have a storyline not somehow related to the evil half of his genetic make-up - but how does it make sense?

He's hung around with Tim Drake, and Tim is the poster boy for 'I lie to my mentor'! And Kon's a teen! Lying to one's parental figure = teenaged behaviour! How does that add up to Kon angsting over lying to Superman? What ever could give him the dumb idea that lying to Superman = Lex Luthor?!

I'm okay with Superman thinking Luthor is an irredeemable sociopath, becaue he kinda is.

As I read this, I tihnk that the storyline is going to be about Kon trying to redeem Luthor somehow, which could be interesting.

Much agreement that Superman's comments about Lex are all wrong. Not just in a continuity-oriented sense, but in the more fundamental sense that Superman's core philosophy should always be that no one is beyond hope and you should try to help everyone.

The writer of this comic should consult with the guy who wrote Legion of Three Worlds, which addressed this very topic... ;-)

I swear from reading comics you'd think that everyone grew up obsessed with exactly what kind of people their parents were because they were fated to be one or the other. I've never in my life thought of either of my parents or anything in my DNA as holding my doom in terms of ethical development.

Also, Kon? I think everyone's lied to Superman. Superman himself lies to everyone even more.

I think you are all misreading what is happening in this comic (the same way Superman is). Superboy isn't at Luthor's house, asking questions about him because he is worried about what type of person his father will turn him into.

At the end of the book, he marks off "helps anyone who needs it" because that's what he plans to do. Help Lex Luthor become a better person.
