I'm reminded of an episode of ANGEL where there was a little kid with a demon inside him who was going around doing all this evil stuff. The heroes exorcises the demon, and tell him he won't have the kid's soul. The demon replies, "What soul?" and reveals that he had actually been trapped inside the kid by the sheer unfathomable level of evil there, and that it was the kid doing all the evil stuff.

Given Waid's penchant for misdirection, I wonder if this story isn't going down similar lines.
