It was in an arc midway through JSA. The Spirit King, the guy who killed the first Mister Terrific, comes back looking to kill Michael, and Hal!Spectre gets involved too. It ended with Michael having a near-death experience and seeing a vision of his dead wife and unborn child.

At the end, Michael remains an atheist, but becomes closer to Doc Mid-Nite and goes to church with him.
