Meet Red She-Hulk

With classic She-Hulk Jennifer Walters (and gamma-powered pal Doc Samson) off the table in the wake of this week's "Incredible Hulk" #600, Loeb hopes to continually up the mystery quotient that has gone along with the series from its inception. "The story that follows immediately after #600 is what happens with Banner and A-Bomb, which in #13 is appropriately called 'Hulk No More,'" the scribe told CBR. "Then #14 through 17 is the 'Code Red' story which is what happens when someone learns 'Who is the Red Hulk?' when he or she is in what we refer to as 'Bruce Banner mode.' That ultimately leads to the conflict between the Red Hulk and X-Force, because it's Domino who finds out. During that time is when we meet Red She-Hulk, and at that point Jen is still missing, so she immediately becomes one of the suspects. And on that, I can't comment either way."

I'm not sure what is and is not considered acceptable for... criticism?... under the current rules, so I'm going to just outline some things I dislike, without pointing any fingers to specific people who may or may not have been involved in the project in question, and while trying to avoid making any unkind blanket statements wherever possible. I apologize in advance if anyone is offended by anything I say, but I am not going to lie and say that I look forward to Red She-Hulk.

1. That costume is a wardrobe malfunction waiting to happen. The small chunk of zipper that still works on top is going to give within the next five seconds of this image being captured, and there will be no way to re-close it, leaving the shirt section of the once-jumpsuit held together only by the boob-belt. The lower zipper section looks... very uncomfortable, particularly given that it is impossible for her to be wearing even a thong underneath, and seems to be on the verge of going also. The pants section is being held up by only two torn chunks of leather (vinyl? latex?) and whatever additional scraps on the back, and then it's goodbye pants. I am frankly astonished and impressed that anything at all is being covered, since that jumpsuit seems to be made of more holes than material.

2. While some aspects of the art style are definitely workable, the anatomy on the whole disturbs me. The arms for one are strange and out of proportion. Her pelvis also looks off, as does her ribcage. For example, while a ribcage as slender as some of the upper section is possible, the shoulders would be narrower, and there seem to be some lower ribs missing. The pelvis seems to be starting off too narrow for a woman of that sort of overall build, since the upper body would imply that the bone structure would have to be smaller than the hips themselves, which would only be properly in proportion to a much smaller overall woman - both shorter and slimmer than Red She-Hulk. On the plus side, her boobs do seem to be at least attempting to be anatomically feasible from a gravitational standpoint, if ginormous in relation to much of the rest of her torso.

3. WTF is with the lightning-bolt-streaked Starfire hair. Hair does not work like that, even if the red chunks are dye. I could understand if there was meant to be curly black hair with some chunks bleached and then dyed red, but I don't think that was the objective here. She also has yellow color variant Starfire eyes. Why is this? I'm going to assume the massive eyelashes and black lips are makeup. If this is not the case, I don't want to know.

4. Red Hulk was not particularly enjoyable, regardless of whether or not people bought it anyways. Yes, I'm sure there were some readers who loved it. Pretty much everything will appeal to someone, such as a large proportion of this community jumping for joy when a scan of an alternate universe where Tony Stark is a woman and marries Steve Rogers appeared (yes, I was one of them, I'll admit it). However, what would imply that a Red She-Hulk storyline is a good idea, in light of the Red Hulk plotline?

If anyone wants to try the "but, can *you* do better?" thing on me now... I don't have the sorts of art supplies available to me that the professional artists do. I don't have a team working with me so that I can pass off the parts that are my weaker areas to other people with different artistic skills than me. I also have less years of experience, little formal training, and an art style that does not necessarily lend itself to comic books. But I can damn well try. I'm not touching it with a ten foot pole without a request, though. And no, that is not me challenging you to challenge me. I'm just heading off a possible response.

*ahem*

I challenge you.

(Because I reckon you'll manage and that will give me a moment of vindictive pleasure.)

*ponders for a moment* Okay. Give me a little bit of time. I'll put it as a reply when I'm done. How do you insert images on here, again? I forget.

If you upload to photobucket it gives you the code underneath the thumbnail, you can just copy and paste. Otherwise I think instructions are in the userinfo? :]

I look forward!

*deep breath* Okay. Here goes. And... that took much less time than I thought. Gel-ink-type ballpoint and colored pencil on plain white paper. I kept the red streaks in the hair, but made them look like, y'know, hair, at least as much as I could. Kept the glowy eyes because dude Red Hulk has them, too. Kept the semi-destroyed black bodysuit, but altered the design and made it much less destroyed. Also actually drew the feet. Also replaced the giant gun with a second whatchamacallit knife thing, because I could. It's not perfect, far from, but I did my best given that I'm a physics major whose drawing abilities are more self-taught than anything. So... what do you think?

D: Sorry I took a while to get to this!

Yeah, I like it. :]. I like the knee-holes especially! More characters should have knee hole, I think.

Not too keen on the remaining boobularity BUT (alas) in comics that's barely even a relevant complaint. And, y'know, you drew feet, so you get points there.

Replacing the gun with the sai: yes.

I keep coming back to the knee holes.

I gotta invent some characters with knee holes!

Glad you like it. The cleavage remaining is for a real reason, actually. The real She-Hulk tends to be rather well-endowed, and... Well, if I was designing the character myself from scratch, as opposed to a re-design, I'd have used a different outfit entirely, that didn't even involve cleavage, or strange-looking materials of unknown origin (is it leather? is it spandex? is it lycra? is it latex? is it God-only-knows-what fictional fabric?). But there was a ton of skin visible in the original, so I figured I could only get away with covering so much without it becoming a totally different character... so I left in the torn off sleeves, two more tears (the removed knees), and a teeny bit of the open zipper issue (but only just enough for cleavage, without her risking falling out of the suit completely). Of course, I also made the zipper only exist to a comfortable length, just below her navel instead of way down there, and replaced the massive boob belt with three slender belts spaced across her torso. If I'd thought I could get away with the zipper closed all the way up to the awesome high collar, I would, because I absolutely love that style of collar, but alas. And yay, I get points for drawing feet! And using a pair of sais instead of one and an ugly huge gun! Yipee! And yes, you've gotta invent characters with knee holes. Totally.

Steve and Tony what? I'm starting to think ya'll are yaoi fans.

Anyway, The red hulk thing actually makes money and sells. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.

At least now we can pick between this and Pak's new book.

Gotta admit though....Kinda like her hair.

*reads first part* Ehehehehe... ^_^U Anyways, I'm not about to try to guess why Red Hulk anything would make money. I really don't think I even want to know. Her hair, though... I actually like the concept of long, thick, dark hair with bright red streaks dyed in, but the way it's drawn here just looks seriously off to me. There's a second picture on the site linked to at the bottom of the main post, and the hair in that one is the one thing I do like.

This was a quote from the S_D 1.0. The toleration rules have been expanded in 2.0.

"Scans Daily began as a slash - i.e. homoeroticism - community. Liking slash certainly isn't a requirement to membership, but what *is* required is acceptance of it. All sorts of comic book content is eagerly welcomed, but we do require that you not make disparaging remarks about the people who brought you this community."
