Now You're Just Being Contrary

Batman's point here is pretty much the exact opposite of the point he makes in every other "Batman is a dick to Superman" conversation ever.

To be perfectly honest, neither one sounds in character.

It's out of continuity, so there's really no such thing as out of character. If we can accept both the Adam West Batman and Frank Miller's Batman as Batman, we can certainly accept this.

But it's the point he should be making.

However, Clark's "Why did I talk to YOU?" is stupid. Right. BATMAN doesn't know what it means to feel ISOLATED.

Up to a point, but Batman hasn't been truly isolated since the night he went to the circus.

As I've always said, Batman has an immediate family network that's practically in double figures; Alfred, Dick, Jason (once upon a time), Tim, Barbara, Cass, Steph, even Sasha and Jaime to a certain extent). Superman has had so many Supergirls flying around who knows which are the ones he's now officially met, and he hardly bothered to interact with Kon for the first ten years of his existence. I'd say Superman IS more isolated than Batman, in real terms.

I'm not sure to what degree people out of the immediate Batfamily realize that. Btw, we can also add Leslie and Jim. Obviously Superman should, but maybe he was troubled enough here that he forgot to take it into account.

But Batman himself struggles with that, and he often does define himself as a loner. Maybe Clark thought that's why Bruce should be able to empathize.

Superman would know.

Yes, he would, but if he was looking for someone to hear him out on the issue of being alone, thinking of Batman makes sense, especially if he's not thinking it through and/or distressed.

I'm not sure if I like Batman coming into Superman's strip. He gets enough exposure.

Yeah, I feel weird about it, too.

When I saw the panels for this strip (without the word bubbles) I thought for sure it was going to be Bruce being an asshole towards Clark (facial expressions didn't help either).

They sound so out of character, Bruce's comment about the Super-prozac was insensitive and Clark going "I am soooo alien and alone" is way overdone (I mean I can understand him going through that phase in his early years but at this point...) their dynamic just seemed way off.

The only things I liked was the art and Bruce telling Clark that he belonged in Earth.

Batman: "Look, I don't know what's gotten into you, but shake it off"

The Atom: "Oh well..."

Seriously though, I love Bermejo's art. Superman's face in the second-to-last panel looks awesome.

"STAR Labs is too good for it."

Hey, Bruce, does that mean you're gonna start killing people in this out of continuity, out of character strip?
