Superman/Batman: Generations III #6, by John Byrne

I remember how back when the John Byrne forum first got an advanced look at this cover, there were a few comments along the lines of, "Eek, how old is that Green Lantern? It's kind of creepy seeing him kissing someone who's physically eleven." Byrne's response was basically, "Relax, it's just a cover. It doesn't happen in the story itself."

Okay, so Lara Wayne was hit by some strange bomb weapon when she was eleven, which kicked her Kryptonian powers into overdrive, freezing her aging. That was in an earlier issue.

That's her father and twin sister journeying to Mars, not her. I want to make that clear so you don't mistakenly assume the above page directly leads to the next.

Incidentally, she's supposedly heavily based on Buttercup of the Powerpuff Girls. Straight from The Byrne's own mouth. It's strange that he likes that show, since it has elements of superhero parody, and he's pretty adamant in his opinion that that sort of thing is "disrespectful."

That's an extremely awkward costume.... If she had a bust, it might work, but, as she doesn't, it just looks like it's planning to fall off...

GUH?

Okay, this is getting downright weird. It's pretty obvious he has a thing, as a creator, for this theme. And it's always the girl who's begging for it. It's definitely a pattern, the only question is why.

My take? Poor, tonedeaf taste on Byrne's part.

I can understand the interest in this sort of thing. I've written stories where a man falls in love with a (prepubescent) young girl, however in both cases them men tried to hide it and the girls were creeped out by it when they eventually found out. But I freely admit it's kind of icky. I wonder if Byrne realises that?

The answer is obvious: Piers Anthony is ghostwriting.

I'm feeling very uneasy about how some people seem to be eagerly crossing from criticizing the work of Byrne to personal attacks.

School age girl crushes on older men do exist. I suspect that this Supergirl's crush on that Green Lantern is influenced by the crush Supergirl apparently had on her cousin Superman in the Silver Age comics.

At least the man the Generations Supergirl has a crush on is not her cousin.

If there's a funny aspect to this scan, it's how embarrassed the other GLs look. Even the one that's just got a ginormous eye for a face seems to be thinking, "Great Krona's Ghost, won't she just friggin' go away?"

It's funny because this is a bit more tame than say how later Lara married Bruce who's kinda sorta her -greatgrandpa (Lara's dad was Superman's grandson but raised by Bruce)

This is stupid. Green Lanterns barely have any clue what the normal look of each others races is, let alone understanding what pubescence looks like. Nor do they have a standard age thing. Some of them have really, really different forms of mating.

A Kryptonian/Terran hybrid old lady is bitching because her utterly alien plant/fish whatever boyfriend currently going through his version of TEEN ANGST. Its like Twilight, with aliens.
