I really wonder at what point the writers stopped getting the point behind 'Suffering Sappho'...clearly the editors missed it from the start, and the Marstons obviously knew...but I can't imagine all the following writers tried to slip crap past the editors.
Technically, Sappho wasn't a "lesbian" as we understand it(though strictly geographically speaking, yes); she had lovers of both sexes and wrote love poetry about both. They didn't have a concept of "gay" and "straight" back then--people just did who they wanted.
As it happens, they actually addressed this fact - or rather, pussyfooted around it. At some point during the Kanigher run, a kid was curious as to just what 'Suffering Sappho' meant, and Wondy informed the tyke that "Sappho was so sensitive, she couldn't stand suffering in any form". Yah-huh. Do tell.
*snerk* Now that's just extra-funny.
It's weird - I KNOW that there's a naughty interpretation of this; my inner pervert snickers as I think about it, yet I don't... know... WHY, exactly. Clearly, my mind is not filthy enough.
Just wait until the next porn week. What's left of your mind will be more than filthy enough. ;) |
