That aimed for "sweet" and hit "creepy stalkerish".

The coloring is awful. The reflections make her look all paunchy when she obviously isn't in profile.

I think I need to stab my eyes out with a spork now. I can't decide which is worse, Superman's hair, Batman being a Lana pimp, or Lana herself.

Yes, it's weird, but in the context of Generations?

Generations might have some questionable stuff, but it's a lot of fun.

I am the most non slash person on earth but even I admit Generations just needed to just accept itself and cut whatever middle man they put between Clark and Bruce.

And then there was a threesome. Or a Supersome, if you will.

There's something about the proportions in that last page that's throwing me. Also, I would have preferred "All those potions and spells had a permanent effect..TURNING ME INTO A HORRIBLE INSECT MONSTER!" Since that's what most of those spells and potions seemed to do...

There was a bit right before this that gives context - apparently, in the 'Generations' universe Lana was playin' around with magic potions and whatnot from a very young age - not just the 'Insect Queen' stuff that she was seen messing around with in the normal DCU, but real, genuine magic. So it makes a fair amount of sense that they would have a cumulative effect.

GAHHHHHH

I HATE HATE HATE this scene. It's bad enough how Byrne killed off Lois in Generations but Batman's remark makes me cringe.

"Oh sure your wife is dead but now you have that girl who borderline stalked you all those years ago, I approve!"

Not only Lois but when Beautiful Dreamer his later on wife and their children Lar-El and Vara die there wasn't that much emotion from Supes other than momentary shock and anger that seemed to dissipate rather fast.

It was canon for quite a while that Clark actually loved both women more or less equally (there was one 'imaginary story', in fact, where he splits in two, and they're like 'yaay! Our problem's solved - there's one LL for each of us!'). Lois was more in evidence in his daily life, and therefore more of a factor, but Lana was his childhood sweetheart that he never quite got over - and given that he stayed loyal to Lois right until her death and for several hundred years afterwards, I wouldn't exactly say this is sullying her memory or anything like that.

So the dickish and traumatized man-child, Superman, and a creepy stalker are going to roam the cosmos, imposing their values wherever they decide they're needed? Oh, yes, this is a recipe for goodness.

Ditto although I have to say I really, really, really liked their interaction in the DCAU but I think that was because DCAU!Lana was more like Mary Jane than Lana.

The romantic liasons where kind of weird in this story but what was creepy was that Batman apart from being with his initial wife and Wonder Woman, he also got it on with his son's (BJ's) adopted son's (Clark Wayne's) daughter (Lara WAYNE) And had a kid with her... I mean sure they weren't related but it's still wrong.

The only relationship I really liked was BJ and Kara, and you could tell he never stopped loving her and even when he died she came back for him.

Ewww. Honestly, I've suspected something was...interesting about Byrne ever since I was a kid and I read my uncle's old issues of the Fantastic Four, where he hooked up Johnny Storm with Alicia Masters (who was a look like of Johnny's sister).

I don't get why everyone's up in arms about this - I actually LIKE this ending. The Lana factor aside, it shows two of the major icons of comics, still the best of friends, leaving an Earth that doesn't need them anymore but without regrets and hopeful for the future, out to seek adventure amongst the stars, grins on their faces and a whole universe ahead of them. What's wrong with that? It's hopeful and charming and optimistic! Why all the scowls?

What their doing is called "Byrne Bashing" in the comics community. Constructive criticism is one thing, but this is just ridiculous insults. Frank Miller gets this bashing, too. It's the backlash that superstardom brings. They build them up into celebrities and then knock them down. They run down those who have become extremely successful, and continue to create and challenge the status quo. Alan Moore's gone relatively unscaved because he no longer writes mainstream superheroes, so he has no new Batman, Superman or Swamp Thing material for his former followers to bash for not living up to their impossible expectations.

Well, frankly, I think Miller deserves it - even at his best, I've never liked him much. And hasn't John Byrne built up a reputation as a bit of an egotist?
That being said, I've never had a problem with his writing (except for 'Spider-Man: Year One. That was awful). His run on the Fantastic Four was damn good stuff, and his She-Hulk stories are classics.

I've never liked Jeph Loeb's writing, and I'll critique his stories, but I wont stoop to bashing him. Sure, Byrne is a bit of an egotist, as are a lot of people. I've always enjoyed John Byrne's writing and Frank Miller's.

Well, basically, I go by what I like, not the writer. If I like something, I like it, even if it's written by someone who I generally dislike. (For example, I think that Metal Men strip that Dan Didio wrote in 'Wednesday Comics' shows definite potential, even though I think the man himself has been digging DC's grave for a while now. Of course, it helps that I really love the Metal Men...)

I love the Metal Men, too, but no matter now much I love the characters, the quality of the writer and the artist and what their doing with them is very important to how much I'll enjoy the characters in each story. I haven't read Dan DiDio's Metal Men story yet. I love Walter Simonson's Metal Men run with writers Steve Gerber, Gerry Conway and Marty Pasko.

And I love the Metal Men story in Bizarro Comics.

Yeah, Simonson's run was great - I own it. The original Kanigher stories were pretty cool, too.
And certainly how competent the writer and artist are is very important; absolutely. I'm just saying that when it's some of your favorite characters, you tend to be a bit more forgiving. And Didio has said that the Metal Men are some of his favorite characters EVER, so I think we're in good hands here.
The first installment of his treatment of the characters is posted here in the first of the two 'Wednesday Comics' posts.

Looking at this, and Batman being the voice of happy approval for us as readers? I'm surprised the author didn't have Batman being the one to encourage 40-something Superman to kiss 14-year-old Lana in the earlier post.

I also... hmm. The 'suddenly immortal' angle, especially as included in a ... 700-years-later epilogue. Okay, then.
