Superman vs. the Teen Titans, and a Wonder Woman question

Vic is wandering through town one day, when suddenly he notices Superman is acting oddly.

Superman then tears off one of Vic's legs and throws him off a building.

Badly injured, Cyborg calls on his fellow Titans for help. Can they stop Superman? :O

Somehow offpanel Superman gets Donna in a throatgrabbing hold,

Then pre-eyegouging Jericho saves the day.

The End! ...sort of.

I do like Superman's oddly Doctor Doom-ish dialogue there. 'Cept the "scorned by all the beautiful women in the world" comment, Doom just wins them over with his... er... personallity I guess.

Anyway, the question, possibly for Bluefall or one of the other Wonder Scholars out there. :)

In some trades I read, they explained Wonder Woman being on the 40's JSA team by saying she got there by time-travel or something. She even had a relationship with Ted Grant in some stories, and they have joked about how she ended up in the "secretary" position on the team etc.

Presumably people knew that a Wonder Woman was out and about during the War, but if that's the case, how come people didn't say "Hey, it's Wonder Woman, that superheroine from the 1940s!" or something similar when Diana appeared on the scene in the 80's or whenever Diana appeared in the modern canon?

I mean, someone must have recognised the costume, at least, surely?

SUPERMAN scorned by the world's women? And wait, is he threatening her with rape? (In and of itself, Superman having sex with a woman would constitute at least attempted murder. See Larry Niven, and Ennis' THE PRO for a demonstration)

I remember this--wasn't this the very first post-MAN OF STEEL Action Comics, when it became DCP for a while? Launched the same month as Superman 1? And we go there? Yeahh, I remember being a bit put off by that at the time. Byrne, that doesn't belong in Superman, ever. No grimdark.

To be fair, it does kind of make sense in context.

Not very pleasant tasting sense, but context none the less.

Forget it, Jake-- it's John Byrne.

It should be explained: that's not Superman. That's scientist David Gundersen possessing Superman's body by his invention - a mind-transfer device.

Oh, I totally forgot. But then, I recall I only read it once. Didn't like Action then so much.

Timeline issues. Perez's Wonder Woman(late 80s) was supposed to be a reboot of the character ignoring the character's existence before that(though keeping some of the same elements). So at that point it was essentially being treated as 'Wonder Woman didn't exist in the DCU pre-that period in time'. It wasn't until Byrne(mid-90s) that the storyline of Hippolyta being Wonder Woman during the War and the time traveling thing was brought up. So in that regard the characters in the 80s/early 90s comic didn't acknowledge 40s Wonder Woman because at that point in time it hadn't technically happened yet.

Does that make sense? Damned continuity...

Aaaah, that makes sense. :)

A timey wimey ball, thing. *nods*

Or how in the Justice League cartoon elderly people only recognise the team from the past AFTER they travelled back to the 40s and helped the Black Hawks etc.

I can't see Cyborg here without hearing the Black Knight scene in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail"... "Come back here and I'll bite you on the ankle!"

I'm seeing the "You'll never learn you INFERIOR creatures!" page twice. Is something else supposed to be in there for the second one?

Don't be sad, seeing Donna tie up Superman, only to get hosed down yet again in the very next panel made me lol pretty hard.

Ohh, so that's where I saw that panel before.

What just got thrown in Superman's eye? (...Is it monkey-Beast Boy throwing green crap?)

Mis-colored rotten tomato thrown by a bystander or possibly the real Superman

Yes, all that superdickery is due to a body-swap.

I just had to go read a review, because I was like: Whaaaaa? Superman is NOT threatening Donna like that.

I was so glad to find out that *that* isn't Superman at all. http://www.supermanhomepage.com/comics/post-crisis-classic-reviews/c-review-classicpostcrisis.php?topic=act584

Still is obnoxious to include, still hardly a proud 'first example of post-crisis Superman in Action Comics' moment, but at least... you know, it's not him.

Ah, I figured as much, but I kinda assumed it was a pre-existing supervillain, not some guy we'll never hear of again. The misogyny made me think Dr. Psycho (especially considering it's Wonder Girl here). Wasted opportunity!

Exactly. That's not Superman. That's scientist David Gundersen possessing Superman's body by his invention - a mind-transfer device. I'm surprised the thread starter didn't explain that.

I didn't provide the context on purpose, because Superman acting like a supervillain for no reason is funnier.

I'm gonna have to apologize here, because I read Vic in that first line and got all excited. Then I remembered...Titans.

Huh. So Donna's lasso is made of scientific polymers? I thought it was a tiny piece of Diana's lasso? Or something like that if I remember the silver age origin story correctly.
