Many didn't HAVE powers. For instance, what was the Atom's excuse? That he couldn't get taller?(though perhaps that would have kept him out in itself) Dr. Mid-Nite--okay, he's blind. No bombers for you.

But Kent Nelson could take off that helmet. Hourman could go through withdrawal for a weekend. Sandman could change clothes. That Spear of Destiny thing was so fucking stupid.

What would be the point, exactly, of going to war with no powers? Then they're just regular schmoes.

The Spear adequately explained why Superman or whoever didn't just end the war instantly.

That's true. Then who'd have won the war?

But they have superpowers; there's tons of more useful stuff for them to do elsewhere (including saving the world numerous times) than just being another dozen or so GIs. "Why didn't they go to war?" is only a question if they can take their powers with them to the front lines.

What? The Justice Society members did enlist in WW II. In one issue of ALL-STAR COMICS, they all signed up in the Army in the civilian identities (except for the Spectre, whose human self was after all dead. And Johnny Thunder joined the Navy just to be different). They had an issue of being sent overseas and sneaking out to do extra fighting in their costumed identities.

It ended with the rather weak excuse that generals were fighting over which JSA member did the most good, and Roosevelt decided that they should remain stateside to fight spies and saboteurs, not to mention the usual mad scientists and invasions from outer space. They were renamed the Justice Battalian for an issue or two, but that was quietly dropped.

Didn't Atom gain an "atomic punch" power during WWII following a fight with Cyclotron in "All Star Squadron"?
