I Don't Want Context. I Don't Care.
I would rather just consider this the quintessential Mighty Crusaders page, and consider the series the foremost example of pure dada in comics. Or, perhaps, anywhere.

He's the goddamn Hangman. When he was a hero, he lynched people. Now he's not so good. He's wearing tinfoil under that mask, and probably smells like pee.

You can just hear brain cells popping as you read it, can't you?

It gets better. This was written by...Jerry Siegel.

But surely they knew that Fly-Man NEVER misses "Dancing with the Stars"?

Why, yes, drugs were very popular in the 60s. Why do you ask?

Wowzers.

I believe it's something like that, coupled with "good guy gone bad."

'Magic Rope do as I say' is the best line I've ever heard.

"Super-frigidity barrier"...?

Some of us probably have ex-girlfriends with that power.

Far from popping, I think some of my brain cells squee'd with glee at the writing. It's not exactly reassuring, but wow! more!

And the pitch was: "He has this rope, see, and it can do anything. Anything."

Of course it can. He's the goddamn Hangman.

It's a shame that the Hangman doesn't keep up that inspired level of lunacy throughout the whole comic - he's really pretty generic in the rest of it, but in that one panel, he's GOLD.

Thanks!

I'm thinking that if a story ever cried out for Fletcher Hanks art, this is it.
