Because a couple of people asked for it! Black Canary in the Grell Years - pt 2 This post is just fluff, really, a whole bunch of cute scenes that I think you guys might like to see, considering how none of it is collected.
And for fun!

Ollie's been a sad lad because he killed a kid. They were playing a game not unlike paintball, and so the kid shot a cop and Ollie thought the cop was dead and it's all very sad, so Dinah decides to get help! OH NOES! HIS PAINTING! Including this page for three reasons: 1) Hal!Butt 2) Ollie sulking! 3) They're going camping, guys. Camping. And also Hal took Ollie while Ollie was unconscious and there's no way for him to leave for another five days. Awwwww. They're sweet and have fun together! ... until Ollie decides to go to the more important woman in his life. When he comes back, Dinah takes care of his injuries <3 Jurgens work in that bottom panel there. Never fails to make me laugh. OLD JOKE IS OLD.Ollie's been feeling kind of incompetent, and so Dinah has been making him work out and stuff so he'll be less wimpy. Heh, silly Ollie. Also, this guy is from Warlord, a book Grell was writing. I'm only including it for one thing. ONE PUNCH! ONE PUNCH! I remember somebody on the Old Scans Daily made a post about Grell's Ollie, and they said that this was a recurring thing, and it was: DINAH: -asks question- OLLIE: -vague answer- OLLIE: -gets shot because he forgot to bring his much more competent girlfriend along- AND ALSO I love Lady Shiva. Now, you'll notice that until now, Dinah's been pretty much in the background, and I've only been posting snippets from scenes. That changes next time, when Ollie has his own Longbow Hunters Experience. Scans from Green Arrow Annual #1 and Green Arrow #19-30, none of which is collected.

Okay, I'll admit it, this was adorable.
And Ollie apparently has read the Picture of Dorian Gray. Must have been a required book in his High School English class or something, as I can't picture him reading it voluntarily.
as I can't picture him reading voluntarily.
Fixed!
Knowing Ollie, he heard about it in one of Roy's English books and then spent three years looking for the damned thing himself because he wanted to look good for his mid-life crisis.
Or he may have seen the movie.
Green Arrow and Black Canary together in a book and it doesn't suck?
No wonder DC wants to recapture the magic!
Not that they're really succeeding ATM...
This calls for a new icon! For hmph! moments and general orneriness.
The art shift at the end startled me. I think I want to look into more of Grell's work. His lines are so clean and expressive.
Also, Ollie's Froot Loops turned into tomato soup when he wasn't looking.
Those last scans. Who's the artist? He's... awesome. Ollie's face is long but... the expressions! My god!
I love how Hal has a green bathrobe.
I like Grell's run but the characters seem so far away from their current incarnation.
And I totally forgot that Shiva was in it. I have to go dig out my issues.
I love how Hal has a green bathrobe.
Ollie left it there the last time they hung out.
Scotty, I have a confession. I have a hard time reading them in this period, for reasons mostly not appearing in this post, but that do show up in either 'Longbow Hunters' and some other... Dinah and Ollie stuff.
Is Dinah left handed? Because she One Punches that dude with her left fist, which is pretty impressive if she is right handed. I like to think she did it on purpose "well, I could one punch him with my right hand, BUT I'll do it with my left, it makes me even more badass"
I guess this is missing the point, but if Ollie killed a kid, shouldn't he be doing some jail time for manslaughter, at least? Please tell me that there were some consequences beyond depression and throwing a glass of scotch at a painting.
'Twas defense. The kid was shooting at a cop, remember? And the judge said he wanted to jail Ollie, but if he did, he'd have to jail the cop too. Or something like that.
He wasn't shooting at a cop, though. They were playing a paintball-like game. Did the cop kill anyone, too? Otherwise, the judge isn't making any sense here.
Warlord really does look like Ollie with white hair, doesn't he? How was Ollie not in the Warlord episode of JLU??? |
