Unpopular Ship Time!

My main OTP from DC comics is without a doubt Babs/Dick. I was kind of hoping that the two of them might get back together now they're both back in Gotham, but then there was the preview art of Dick/Kory which a) made my eyes bleed because oh god it's awful and b) made me mourn for my OTP and the good times between them.

We'll start waaaay back at the begining, when a young boy going by the name Robin first clapped eyes on a certain red-headed Commissioners daughter.

For him at least, it was love at first sight, so much so that when the Commisioners daughter starts wearing her own cowl, he recognises her immediately

The two share some adventures as Batgirl and Robin.

But Batgirl resists the charm of the Boy Wonder.

She has to admit however that hanging with Robin has it's perks.

The Commissioner suspects that it might be his little girl running around in the cowl, so it falls to Robin to put his suspicions to rest - and to show what he'll do to protect a girl he likes XD

They continue to fight crime in their own very special way and in the process, Batgirl de-ages (at least according to Marc Andreyko, anyway - Barbara is suddenly 16, as opposed to being a young woman with a job in a library, who has taken pre-law and is hoping to be cop) and Robin hit's puberty and Batgirl gets a new kind of 'perk'.

I have to admit, I have a kind of love/hate (mostly hate) relationship with the issue those four scans come from. Honestly, I think I only included it because it because it makes these next images so much funnier when you know it's canon.

But anyway, back to the story.

Years go by. Batgirl and Robin grow up and Robin becomes Nightwing: owner of the nicest arse in the DCU. While Batgirl. Well. She get's fridged and loses the use of her legs. She beomes Oracle. Nightwing, still manages to give her the best gifts though.

Of course, then Oracle does what she does best and pushes away those she loves most, putting a temporary roadblock on their budding relationship. But they have a wonderful conversation about the power of memory and first loves.

And that temporary roadblock doesn't last long.

:D! *Draws tiny hearts around them* To cut a long story short, they have a brief relationship, Nightwing get's character raped - and eventually just plain raped - and Oracle pulls away again. Then there is a crisis and they get engaged!

But it doesn't last because Nightwing goes off to travel the world for a year with Batman and the new Robin. Another crisis and one missing Batman later, Nightwing finally dons the cowl himself. But whatever codenames they're using, one thing that Babs can count on is that Dick really does give the best presents in the entire world.

So here's to unpopular ships and loving them even when the writers don't *raises glass to salute to this and other ships that don't get the love and respect they deserve*

Also: while I was writing this up a few hours ago, I hit post by mistake before it was finished and hidden behind a cut. Appologies to anyone who was assulted to a half finished and uncut post.

I've said it before, I'll say it again, the Babs Dick OTP was not one that particularly gelled for me. They're a cute couple, but like Dick and Donna, they're too alike to have much of an interesting spark between them. They share too much of a past, and a career path.

Even here, they can't seem to decide how it works, in the Batgirl Year One pages, we have Babs telling Dick in one panel not to be so serious, then the next she's saying that he doesn't take his mission seriously, which is doubly weird when you consider that Dick HAS been at the job significantly longer than she has.

Oh, and I feel that Nightwing Annual #2 should not be used as proof of anything EVER, since it has Dick two timing Kory and one-night-standing Babs.

This. Although the locked-in-a-safe gag is kind of fun, but the dialogue throughout just seems off and not really true to character for either of them.

Yargh. I bought it a while ago because it was by Marc Andreyko, and was kind of shocked by how much of a douche he wrote Dick as.

I totally agree. The idea of them as a couple is better than the actuality. They are cute, but that's it.

And can I just say I hate the artwork where Dick is holding the orange. He looks like he has razor cuts all over his face.

OH MY GOD YOU MADE AN ICON OUT OF THAT PANEL! XDDDDD *ahem*

Good sir, may I steal the icon for my own use?

Word. I like Dick having an unattainable crush on Babs, but them actually together never worked for me.

Hence my love/hate relationship with the issue. Some moments - such as the two of them locked in a safe - I loved but the cheating thing had me wanting to punch someone. Like I said, mostly I only included it because it of The Dark Cat's scenes.

The comic geek in me isn't keen on the whole Crazy Quilt bit because it misses the point of CQ, that he hates Robin and doesn't give a damn about Batman.

The other part of me finds it improbable that a hormonal kid who has spent his adolescence fighting the likes of Catwoman and Poison Ivy isn't equipped with a suitable protective/restrictive cup.

Agreed, the Black Cat made HER scene funny, also here, in the most inappropriate use of an younger sibling ever as the two older Robins see Wonder Woman deal with their Dad and Green Arrow arguing AGAIN! :)

But she made it a recurring plot point in the story and handled it with a light and amusing touch. As shown in the annual, it just comes across a cheap "kid with erection" joke.

Also "Wow you sure smell nice?" at a time like that? Ick, that's just... lame.

*laughs at the Black Cat panel*

I see where you're coming from. I still find the bit in the annual funny though ;)

Most of the time I hear Dick/Babs being said to be a good idea because it leads to much angst and personal drama. Which is alright with me at least, since that's the version of the ship I'm invested in; the version where they have to make most efforts to make it work.

They share too much of a past

That's the tension between them, and the obstacle between them.

The Nightwing Annual #2 could be used as proof of a great many things, but probably not the way Andreyko intended it. Though I liked the non-flahback scenes the way I was presumably supposed to like the flashbacks. Babs as an drill sergeant! :D
