Citizen Wayne, by popular demand
Several people expressed interest in seeing a sample of the Elseworlds story "Citizen Wayne", set in the 30's, so:

Bruce Wayne is the owner of a crusading newspaper. His employee Vicki Vale has just told him that someone speculated that he might be the Batman.

(Bruce's father was still killed when Bruce was a child, but his mother lived.)

As a bonus, here are a few Batman- or superhero-themed cartoons gleaned from different places.

I think this one was in some comic book publication in '88 or '89. Or it could have been in my college newspaper. I just found the clipping in a box from that era recently.

This one came from and old humor book called For Men Only.

I chuckled at the Help Wanted one. And let's be honest, Batman's booth at career day would be way more crowded than that.

Either its a funny angle, or Vicki's got a big backyard. Not that that's a problem.

I wonder what the 30s equivalent of "Baby Got Back" would be.

I know there is a lounge version of that song by Richard Cheese. But I'm not sure if there is a jazz version.

I would like to look at that, but I can't stop boggling at her big hair.

Sadly, the "Crimson Ghost" one is probably referring to the guy's football star nickname. It's funnier to imagine he was a masked avenger, though.

I hadn't even thought of that. Phooey. It does make a lot more sense that way, but since I don't follow sports, I couldn't think of any other reason for someone to have such a sobriquet.

I love Noir!Batman's outfit, even more than I liked Pirate!Batman's.

It's an interesting costume, all right. The mask reminds me more of an insect than a bat, and I wish there'd been a BIT more in the way of a cape - those 'batwings' aren't even poncho-length - but striking it certainly is.

I like the pants and the wings-things the most. XD

Each to their own. At least this one has batlike characteristics; I've seen alternate Batman costumes that are so un-batlike in design that you wonder why they bothered doing a Batman story. It's like 'wait - that's Batman? That can't be Batman - he's got no cape, and his costume's red, and his mask looks more like a chipmunk. Why not just call him 'Chipmunk-Man' instead?'

Yeah, I know what you mean.

"Munk-man!"

I would, but my art skills aren't good enough. I'm good at stick figures, but not much else.

There are a lot of superhero-themed Bizarro comics.
