Elseworlds I just acquired Superman/Batman: Alternate Histories. It includes "Leatherwing" (Pirate!Batman), "Legacy" (a Superman who got here 200 years earlier and prevented the American Revolution), "Crucible of Freedom" ("John Henry Irons is born and raised as a slave during the 1800s"), and finally, "Citizen Wayne" (1930s noir).
Under the cut, two scans from the pirate one.

What makes you say that? It's Batman filtered through The Crimson Pirate, sounds like a plan to me!

I actually read that. It was fairly entertaining. IIRC, that year all the DC annuals had an Elseworlds theme. The stories were hit and miss, but that one was a hit.
I'd like to see noir!Batman sometime. That sounds cool.
Though I don't think anything could really beat pirate!Batman, because pirates are just that awesome.
the problem with noir!Batman is that it wouldn't be too different from regular Batman. but yeah, I'd dig it.
True, I suppose. Still, I dig all things noir, so that's why I want to see it. XD The John Henry Irons one sounds cool, too.
Yeah, Batman is pretty cloe to noir from the get-go.
I like it. Joker and Catwoman especially seem well-suited to the pirate look. Batman and Robin creep me out a bit, though.

Why creep you out?
Bear in mind in that picture Robin hasn't seen Batman behind him. He thinks he's the one the bad guys are backing away from so is rather... exultant about it.
I don't know exactly. Robin's facial expression just weirds me out. I think it is the artist's style that's partly to be blame. As for Batman, the pirate shirt and the ear-ring don't really work for me. I think perhaps it's the 90s that creeped me out. =P
It's got some pretty art, it's pirates, and it made the Joker just a little creepier. There's a lot to love.
Upping the Robin-Peter Pan link, I think. Which is interesting, since Robin is opposed to Peter Pan in about as many ways as they're similar. Another thing I liked about this Robin when I read the Elseworlds was that the character is Robin (or a Robin) more than any particular Robin from canon. It was a good reinterpration.
"Robin Redblade" is an awesome name.
I wish Joker could've been dressed in purple.
"Robin Redblade,the twink wonder"
"Holy Terror" was my fave elseworld Batman.
Great story, but too depressing for me to really enjoy it.
Still, Bruce as a priest was a nice spin on things.
Selina looks good as a pirate, I have to say. So does Bats.
Selina is totally meow in this. It's vastly, overwhelmingly better than what they're dressing her in nowadays.
And the bat-earring is hilarious, given that they have to stick one earlobe awkwardly out of the cowl to make it work.
I was assuming that they both were sticking out, and only one was visible in the picture.

I love that Joker has the most period clothing of all of them. Fops ftw.

Bats in a frilly shirt! With them large flowy sleeves! Bats in a pirate romance novel with a bodice-ripper cover! My mind just exploded. |
