Golden Age Wonder Woman crack These are from Wonder Woman #4, 1943. Paula von Gunther and other inmates of Reformation Island must pass various tests to prove that they have reformed and are ready to leave the island and serve Aphrodite. Marston really seemed to like these contests. And they always seemed to involve girls getting tied up - BDSM as competitive sport.
Insert your own clever quip about the lack of need for Japanese bacilli to drive American women insane here. Yeah, the racial epithets were commonly used at the time. It still makes me wince. Anyway. Apparently the gnats have the same effect as that book Renee Zellwegger wrote. Slaves and all. Mighty thoughty of you, Diana. http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wks3c http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wpqsx http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wq1f6 http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wrc25 http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wseqk http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wt3az http://pics.livejournal.com/mosellegreen/pic/000wwr8r

The bondage stuff is still amusingly kinky, but I continue to find WW's total indifference and even facilitation of Paula's slave-keeping to be damn creepy.
But the slaves love it! *cough*
The thing that WTFs me most is the last panel's speech bubble problem. Notice how two of them are pointing to the Japanese guy when Trevor's supposed to be saying one of them? It makes him look like he has a weird multiple personality or something.
While I agree with you, it actually makes a fair amount of sense, given that Diana is the latest scion of a society which has existed more-or-less unchanged since Greco-Roman times. (Well, except for kangas and mental radios and purple rays and whatnot, but c'mon, cut 'em some slack.) Back then, slaves were not only accepted, they were common - every empire of any size or importance had them, and they were a part of everyday living. So while we may assume that the Amazons were a TAD more enlightened than that back then, it's understandable that they wouldn't react to slavery with quite the amount of shock and horror that we would.
Yes, there's nothing quite like a well stocked laboratory with enslaved maidens chained to the floor.
...
Hey, I know how Marvel can really make Tony Stark look like a creep.
Okay, I know I can't be the first one this has occurred to- Marston. The guy who wrote the Gor novels. Cage match.
Are the bits around the speech bubbles in scan four actually Japanese, or just faux-Asian scribble?
