Robin 163 - Happy Fathers Day, Batman!
It's Tim's first Fathers Day as Bruces adopted son and things, as usual, do not go to plan. He goes out to buy him a present.

And Tim thinks he's Superman here, clearly. He takes off after the bad guys, making him very late for his Fathers Day dinner, which leaves Alfred a little annoyed.

*Hearts* Bruce's worry over Tim is just so... touching. I love this issue. In fact I love all BatFamily moments like this.

Also: Alfred's 'Indubitably, sir,' when you know he's really thinking 'great! Yet ANOTHER trinket for me to dust.' XD

I like to think that about 70% of Alfred's dialogue are meant to be read in a dry, bored, almost irritated voice.

Beechen's Alfred seems really OOC. If anything, it would be Bruce trying to sneak bites and Alfred giving him his mega death glare saying that he wasn't to touch a thing until Tim arrived.

His Bruce is spot-on, though. He's worrying about his baby bird and d'awww, he's genuinely being nice to him.

The art isn't doing him any favors either. 4th scan, 3rd panel: he looks PISSED.

Yeah, I agree. I can't see Alfred getting all pissy at Tim like that.

His Bruce here is done well, but there's an issue around this time where Tim mentions something evil!Cass said that insulted the role of Robin, and Bruce is all "well, that's just proof of how disturbed she is," and it's supposed to be this heart-warming moment where Bruce is bolstering Tim's confidence as Robin. But with respect to Cass it's insulting and doesn't make any sense.

That being said, this scene here is pretty sweet, and it's nice to see father-son moments with Tim and Bruce.

I love moments like this--not just because, well, it's clearly adorable...but the way that it's so hard to buy for Bruce Wayne, billionaire, that the watch being broken really does make it most special.

I really like how Tim is able to accept both his "real" parents and Bruce without getting bogged down in angst about it.

IIRC, Bruce knows because he did a DNA test. But he didn't reveal whether Damien was his or not, and said that he would tell Tim when Tim was ready.

That was in the Batman and Son trade and I don't know if it's been mentioned again later.

Surely Dick would get a stake in it too? Didn't Bruce adopt him as well, eventually? And Cass?

Of course. If Bruce was declared dead--which he hasn't been--he'd have a will read that would make provisions for all his children and probably all the important people in his life. Damian, whether or not he has Bruce's DNA wouldn't come before anybody else.

I KNOW, okay? I read Robin OYl fully expecting to hate it, and then a lot of them turned out to be really good, with Tim adjusting very well to his adoption, maintaing a close relationship with Dick and Bruce being depicted as more of a non-dickish, (gasp!)caring father-figure than he's ever been to Dick in recent history. And then I flip to the front cover and I see it was Beechen's run! BEECHEN, who wreaked wrack and ruin in my beloved Batgirl! I'd put it down to him being a bad writer before, but now it turns out he can actually tell a good story so I have no idea what happened to him in Batgirl.

The trouble with Robin OYL was the inconsistency between titles. In Batman and Detective, everything is hunky-dory, with Gordon and co happy to see the Duo back, but in Robin's pwn title, he's persona non grata and wanted for murder. I don't mind some differences, but that just seemed completely out of kilter.

I think the problem is that Beechen is completely unable to write female characters.

Like, in his Brave and the Bold TV episode, Bruce's mother never even says a single word (seriously, you could replace her with a life-size doll and nobody would notice). It's all about The Boys.

He wrote my favorite TT episode 'Haunted' and I didn't notice anything OOC about Raven and Starfire who were prominent in that episode. He even wrote some of my other favorite eps from TT.

Sweet, though you think Bruice might have radioed Tim to see if what was delaying him was something he might like some helpo with.

Oh, and Tim's been thinking he was Superman pretty much since his debut...

And if only editorial didn't cut the girls out so often! I particularly liked the moment between Babs and Bruce from the Gotham Knights post, it was exactly the way I always like to see their relationship, almost brother-sisterly. I need to get that issue!

I think Babs is as integral as Dick is. I love how she can control everything with just a single word with the boys. There's a panel where Bruce shows up to see Babs' 'new toys' that is one of my favourites in the whole series.

Gotham Knights is one of the best series out there for showing how good the girls and boys of the bats fit in. The whole dynamic is fantastic and I miss it so much.
