Is it just me, or does Jeanty's Babs look a lot like Willow? (Especially the last panel of the first page here.)
Motto. It is never just you.
It sort of makes me want to see Jeanty draw for Buffy Season 8.
All part of the de-aging of the DC heroines.

Yeah, splitting image. And Kate..If they killed all of Batman's baddies, then the writers would have to come up with new and interesting bad guys ever other issue.

Maybe she could just kill the sucky ones (like that new guy Professor Pig, or Damian*)
*Yeah, I know he's not really a villain, but he should be.
I was mildly surprised, for a second, to see Ramsey as a kid again.
I'm having a hard time separating this art from Buffy Season Eight, since that's what I associate Jeanty with.
"Mizzus Spensuh, would pwease stop the nasty bad guys. Pwetty, pwetty pwease."
"That's what I'm here to do, Babsy. *wink*"
It's times like these that I thank Ethan VanHook for reminding me what an idiot Barbara Gordon is, so stuff that this doesn't make me pissy.
Having avoided VanHook's bad times, I'm not so lucky. >:(
That's four pages out of a nine-page story. You should prolly cut one to keep with the 1/3 rule.

I'm going to stick with this for another two issues to at least give Andreyko time to win me over with about a full issue's worth of story, but I'm not optimistic. A lot of what I liked about Manhunter was Kate's supporting cast in addition to Kate herself, and I'm getting the feeling that I won't be seeing them in this title. I still like Kate, but I'm not going to hang around for nine pages that I just like for $3.99 a month.
On the plus side, though, I loved Kate's fangirl moment with the Commissioner.
And Dini's Streets of Gotham doesn't interest you?
Oh, no, he said we'd be seeing as much of the cast as he could possibly fit in. This issue was probably just set up.
The Babs here is interesting. Her explicit condoning of Kate is total crap - she's the least hardline of the sanctioned Bats about killing, which is why her and Hel work, but this is still way over her line and there's been nothing in her life recently that would begin to prompt that kind of drastic attitude shift. But her coolness, her lie to Jim to protect Kate, and Kate's general wariness of her, does come a hell of a lot closer to capturing what their dynamic should actually be like than any of the BIRDS issues Kate was inexplicably in.
but this is still way over her line and there's been nothing in her life recently that would begin to prompt that kind of drastic attitude shift.
While I agree with you, I think DC thinks Babs encounter with the Joker + the Oracle mini is enough to justify her change of view. (One can almost make it work if one thinks Babs is suffering from some sort of Post Traumatic Stress disorder from those incidents, although even that has some holes in it.)

Part of me is thinking that Oracle's leading Kate on, get Kate to trust her, so that when she does kill a crook, Oracle's on her ass like gangbusters.

I thought she wasn't encouraging Kate to kill as Manhunter, but rather encouraging her to seek the death penalty for DC villains as DA of Gotham.
Well, there really has to be some textual explanation for why Babs isn't bringing Kate in/being crazyass manipulative with her, even if it is illogical.
I will be interested to see what happens when Kate meets Gotham's ex-D.A.
I'm sorry, but this is from a 9-page story, meaning that 1/3 of it amounts to 3 pages. Please remove one scan.
I'm not crazy about the fact that Marc is probably going to end up killing Jane Doe in this. We don't have many good villainesses that STAY EVIL.

Given that Kate Spencer is the least competent DA since Adrian Chase (may he rest in peace), I'd think that most of Gotham's criminals should be thrilled to have her in office. (Those that don't know she's also Manhunter.)
I love Kate's fangirl moment with the Commissioner - it's nice to see that Gordon has a good reputation in law department circles. (Then again, it's probably divided pretty equally between 'that honest, hardworking cop who stuck by his city even when it was a mostly-abandoned warzone' and 'that guy who needs a freak in a bat costume to solve all his problems.')
While I'm interested in seeing where this goes, so far the interest is overwhelmed by the blistering DO NOT WANT reaction. Why oh why is DC taking a killing vigilante into Gotham of all places, where the resident crime-fighters are among if not the most opposed to any form of killing? And don't tell it's because she's going to bring ~*~true justice~*~ to Gotham. Gotham and the Bats are so fascinating because they scare every criminals but do not ever, ever kill. |
