One Perfect Moment (times three): The Authority
OK, I'm very late to the party, but I feel utterly justified in posting this (and making it so big) because, unless I'm mistaken, no one has posted any Authority bits yet. My opinion of Warren Ellis' work, particularly some of his later stuff, is mixed, but I think that his original Authority run with Bryan Hitch has him at the top of his game, and each of the three arcs has a Perfect Moment. (Big images follow. Apologies in advance for poor image quality and/or any fubars; first time posting this sort of thing to IJ.)

From the first arc: The Authority are fighting a Fu Manchu-type named Kaizen Gamorra. He has an island with a forcefield that Superman would bounce off of; The Midnighter has the Carrier, a thirty-five-mile-long dimension-hopping ship. Guess who wins?

From the second arc: They're fighting an alternate-universe Britain, and Apollo has exhausted his solar-energy reserves. Jenny Sparks is going to teleport him high in the Earth's atmosphere, betting that he can recharge before he goes splat on the ground.

D'awww...

From the third arc: they're fighting God, who is a pyramid-shaped giant space turd. They need to go to the moon to check something out.

Well, moments like that are easy to find with Ellis, because his mainstream characters have an annoying habit of spending most of their time explaining who and what they are.

As a series, the book kinda got lost in the "we must make each threat new and scarier" but the first three stories were gold. :)

There can never be too much Authority.

Love this book! Thanks for putting it up.

So wonderful. And this book is unrecognizable now. Stormwatch too. Wildcats also. I wish they'd stop.

I never got caught up in the whole "Authority is ZOMG" trend that ran through the early 2000s.

All the characters were so, "meh"

It's possible you'd have needed to read Ellis's run on Stormwatch that ran up to the start of Authority as well, where the characters were all introduced and he turned the whole damn, up until then, fairly boring and formula 90's edgy superhero Stormwatch comic on its head.

Aww. See, this is why I love The Authority: they act like human beings with awesome superpowers, instead of lantern-jawed Heroes-with-a-capital-H or grimdark Batman clones. Midnighter thinks being able to take down truly evil people is the most awesome job in the world; he and Apollo are always going to worry about each other; Angie never loses her awe of the world, and what she can do in it. The only character I never really got a feel for was Jack - somehow, he never seemed to develop a personality.

('Course, the whole human beings with superpowers thing means they are occasionally arrogant pricks, but still. I like it.)

You know, there are times when superheroes drag planets. There are times when they damage the very fabric of space-time. But it's hard to find a moment that more encapsulates the sheer wonder of superhero comics better than that panel of Angie on the moon.

Yes. This.

This is why I love the Authority. And refuse to acknowledge the mean-spirited shit that Mark Millar wrote when he took over, and why I will give anything Warren writes at least a trial run.
