Greg Rucka interview
There's an interview by Greg Rucka over at IGN about his upcoming run on Detective Comics.

darn it Rucka you don't need trauma to wear the Bat quit telling them that

I'm thinking that part of Kate's origin will involve her being booted out of the army for the DADT policy. Rucka's publically disagreed with it, she's being referred to as an army brat elsewhere, that she views her costume as a uniform, he says she's incredibly comfortable with her sexual identity and that she paid for it, so I'm thinking when she went it, someone asked her if she was a lesbo, and she said "yeah-suckit". When she was discharged, she told Renee, who told Kate that she was being an idiot, and that was just a feather that broke the aching, exhausted, calcium-defied back of their relationship. Anyone else have any ideas?

I'm really glad that he's going to explain the fact that she's wearing the Bat and why Bruce has let her, that the Renee bit will be going up in page count (:D) although that'll reduce the amount of JHW3 art (D:).

If I had a worry, it would be Rucka describing her as a 'succubi' here, but in the preview she seems ... not very succubish? I may have a different definition of the word, but I'd always imagined a succubi as more of a "uses-her-sexuality-as-a-power", which she's not doing. Maybe we'll see it later on, but because it's Rucka I don't have a worry.

And because it's gorgeous and we need legality, have pg 6-7 of 'Tec #854

Also, mad credit to DiDio. This is ridiculously awesome, and according to Rucka he backed the whole thing, and has been adamant about giving the book it's strongest chance (which doesn't alleviate the annoyance that it took 3 years, but still, it's coming NOW and it's gonna be great).

Anyone here NOT planning on buying 'Tec? If so, why?

I'm not planning on getting it, though I'm on the fence. I just can't find myself being interested in Batwoman.

I'm perplexed by why Batwoman's been given pale white skin. And I heard something about a tattoo?

I've been really liking the idea of someone seeing that the Bats were gone and deciding that someone needed to step up and it might as well be her. I hope Rucka takes it in that direction.

Either way, I'm totally looking forward to this. Can you link to the interview, possibly?

I wasn't planning to buy it, but I just remembered that it is on my pull list. It looks pretty decent though, so maybe my laziness will pay off.

The plot sounds interesting enough to make me curious; it's certainly past time Kate got a chance to be turned into a fully fleshed-out character with some time in the spotlight.

Also, the art looks REALLY good on this ... even if the story ends up being completely crap (which doesn't seem likely) it might be worth the cost just to look at all the pretty pictures.

*Sighs at the lack of an edit button*

As for the succubus comment, looking at the full context of his statement it doesn't look like Rucka's aiming at a "sex for power" angle with her so much as Kate going more for nice and friendly as an interrogation method rather than Batman's "scary bat-god" modus operandi.

I'm also intrigued by Rucka's statement that: "I have tried to make her even more brutally efficient than Batman. Batman tends to punch people in jaws, Kate breaks elbows, she goes for joints, she takes you down really quick. When she throws that switch she doesn’t mess around." That would fit with Scottyquick's theory of Batwoman being ex-military, because that sounds like textbook military martial arts.

I really enjoy Rucka's work, but Dini's book -- or, more accurately, Andrekyo's back-up feature -- got my wallet's vote. My affection for Kate (and her wonderful, wonderful supporting cast) is already established, and, while I think Kathy's new costume design kicks ass, I'm not so keen on the character I've seen advertised so far and, as mentioned, it's been a very long wait.

On the second interview: the whole 'Kate teases her information out of the criminals' and references to her being seductive are.. irritating. I always liked that the Batclan women weren't as oversexualised as other heroines.

I'm planning on getting the first few issues anyway, if only because the art is gorgeous.

Yeah, I don't really dig this whole succubus thing. I'm also kind of ambivalent about the Batclan.

But this is sooooo pretty. And pretty can make up for a lot.

Truthfully, I think I'm looking forward more to the Question feature, but that's just because I already know and like Renee Montoya, and Kate Kane is still a stranger to me.

I really want to feel confident that on the whole Rucka and JH William's work will be good, but my nitpicky-ness already has issues.

One is the weird cone-bra that strangely highlights her nipples in the interior art we've seen so far. This is always going to be a pet-peeve for me, but sports bras, people! Why are so many comic book artists completely unaware of their existence? It's especially bothersome when so much detail, thought, and practically went into the design of Batwoman's costume, and then you have that.

(Granted, it's not so bad in the pages you've posted as compared to the first preview pages that came out.)

As for the succubus thing...I take it he's sort of playing on the idea that Batman draws answers out of people by fear and violence, and that Batwoman does that too. But for her there's an added element to it in that she's a woman, and a lot of the people she's scaring are men, so there's the potential for her gender to play a factor and to use sexuality in there somehow. I mean, if you read Rucka's script in what I linked to above, it details her being attractive and seductive while being creepy and scary at the same time.

Not sure how I feel about that yet. In general though, I'm really not fond of women being called succubi.

darn it Rucka you don't need trauma to wear the Bat quit telling them that

No kidding. Especially given that he says that after mentioning Barbara Gordon, who wasn't motivated by tragedy to be Batgirl. Not to mention that Tim didn't start out with tragedy (though it followed him soon after and stuck around).

On the succubi thing, well, Rucka only seems to be able to write two kinds of strong women well. Man-with-tits, and more seductress/flirty.

This may come from his pulp affections, though.

The art looks beautiful, in black and white even more so than in colour.
I wonder if Williams is going to keep up the weird panel layout all through the issue though. I find it distracting and more than a bit manieristic.

Well, it continues the trend of Bat Females taking the icons unto themselves instead of being graced or granted it by the Bat authority--and I like that trend.

Babs did it at least twice, Cass too, Steph continues to do it about every year or so, and now Kate's doing it.

Isn't she meant to be some sort of closeted socialite? If she went into the army and was kicked out under DADT, well, there isn't a society column that wouldn't be full of it.

I really want Batwoman to not care what Batman thinks. I like reading women who does what she likes and doesn't need permission. her having to ask for the privilege of figting crime in gotham would be so backward, almost up there with the 'emergency secret weapon'.

I will probably not buy, in the end, for two reasons. First, because the woman's sexuality is of no interest to me whatsoever. I do not want page or panel space wasted discussing her relationships, or justifying herself, or taunting or barbing anyone who criticizes her. And second--and I am prepared to be dissuaded of preconceptions I may have here--my perception of Greg Rucka's writing--admittedly, not from actually reading him, but from the kinds of fan opinions I see--is that he's not my kind of writer. I usually don't like and don't understand the appeal of the "gritty, street-level, warts and all"-approach to characters and stories. I hate CSI-type shows, and I don't watch "Wired" or "The Shield" or "24." The reasons I'm interested in this at all are the beautiful art, and the idea of a Batwoman, which I basically like. The character in Batwoman I want to see is one much like Batman himself--no-nonsense, impersonal, job-oriented, competent, focused, direct. Much like the Elseworlds World's Finest Batgirl--or one of my all-time favorites, Xena, for that matter. I don't think Rucka will be delivering much of what I want.

Am I the only one who does not enjoy this art?

Her mask is really bizarre, with the strange bags under her eyes. What's up with that? And I just don't like her mask in general. Or any of the art on the people. (The background is really pretty though!)

I'll buy it, at least to check it out. The art looks awesome! I LOVE when a comic evokes an atmosphere, and, not being a female, I have as little problem with an unrealistic costume for women as I do with unrealistic costumes for men. It's fantasy, after all. As for Kate not having Bats' permission, the interview does seem to imply that Kate has a reason for wearing the Bat, so maybe (fingers crossed) she might be following in KATHY'S footsteps? That might involve the tragedy as well. The military thing? I hope she isn't based on a current policy like DADT. It's like tying Wonder Woman to WWII, or any number of characters to the Cold War. No elasticity for age/origin.
And while I'm glad she's gay, as there are almost no writers who can supply a decent romantic straight attachment for a title heroine, and she won't require anyone even try, I kind of hate the smugness with which DC seems to state "You've got your GAY mainstream character now. Be happy." , ignoring the percentage of us who happen to be the more problematic, in terms of writing, gay males. Speaking solely for me, Gay Batwoman is far less interesting than Gay Nightwing would be (After all, that gig's open now, as well.)...YMMV.

Unless Rucka completely forgets how to write comics, this will be the first Batfamily comic that I will have picked up regularly ever.*

I'm not buying it for the same reason I'm not buying any other comics right now - I'm broke. Right now, all I can afford is the occasional TPB after a series or storyline has been collected. I'm going to sit back, look at the posts, and if they wind up intriguing me, then we'll see. I can't afford to waste my money on bad comics, but I am prepared to spend it on good ones.
