One Perfect Moment: Sue Storm
So! This is my first post to any incarnation of S_D so I hope I get this right...

I don't read Fantastic Four very often but this scene, from New Avengers 48, just says to me exactly what Sue is all about...

I love everything about her in this scene: her heartbroken expression when Jessica tells her the baby is gone, to taking control and getting down to business. Mother and hero rolled into one. And she executes both roles beautifully.

Wow! Great first post!

It's not often you get a moment when Sue clearly uses the voice which has a distinct undercurrent of "Obey me now, without hesitation or argument, or I will make it my mission for the rest of your lives to make said lives as intolerable as only a wife/big sister/friend can manage, and I will manage that mission magnificently"

She should get far more of them. If she did I might actually be tempted to read FF on a more permanent basis other than 'when they're involved in a crossover.' XD

Wow! Great first post!

Agreed. Also? What a great idea for a theme week. We're seeing lots of new posters.

I'm delighted by that too, it's barely 24 hours old and we've had over 40 submissions! :)

If this pace keeps up, we could easily have a hundred Perfect Moments by the end of the week.

I'm betting we get a hundred by THURSDAY! We're already past 80!

*nods*

I think it's a theme that's really grabbed the imaginations of a lot of people, even the lurkers like me XD

One of the things I've noticed about comics fans - especially at S_D - is that the only thing we love more than a good bitch is the chance to tell every one exactly why our favourite characters are our favourites.

Now I just need to hope that my second post (which I'm working on slooooowly) is just as good XD

I think that's true of all geeks. We love our fanthings, and we want you to love them too. :)

What are you thinking of posting?

Something Spoiler related - not a perfect moment (although I do have one for her - in fact I have a couple - which I shall probably post later in the week).

I too loved this moment. This plus Jimmy Woo's "M-11, DEATH RAY!" were the only two parts of Secret Invasion that I thought rocked.

Someone really -- no, REALLY! -- needs to post the scene from Civil War where Sue takes out Taskmaster after he dares to try to shoot Reed. Such a crowning moment of Sue being effortlessly...Sue.

I thought Tasky and Reed were both pro-Reg?

yup. Reed defended Sue when she was being attacked from behind by Taskmaster. He took the hit, and Taskmaster learned the hard way why Wolverine fears her and why she is one of the few people to take out the Hulk.

Er, wait, I had my sequence of events backwards in my comment above. Tasky tried to shoot Sue during the final fight in Civil War and Reed, trying to save her, took the bullet. That's when Sue flipped and ground him into the pavement (meaning, after Reed was shot).

This is a great Sue scene, indeed. I have a question, though - since when is the FF back in the Baxter Building? I thought they'd been at Four Freedoms Plaza for years now - you know, the place with the giant 4s on top? When did they move?

From Wikipedia:

After the Fantastic Four and other costumed heroes were presumed dead in the wake of their battle with Onslaught, Four Freedoms Plaza was stripped clean of all the FF's equipment by Vernard and Reed Richards' father Nathaniel, who sent it into the Negative Zone to keep it out of the hands of the United States military.

Upon their return, the Fantastic Four could not move back into Four Freedoms Plaza, as it had been destroyed by the Thunderbolts, shortly after the revelation that they were actually the Avengers' longtime foes, the Masters of Evil. Thus, the Fantastic Four moved into a retrofitted warehouse along the Hudson River which they named Pier 4. The warehouse was destroyed during a battle with Diablo, after which the team received a new Baxter Building, courtesy of Reed's former professor Noah Baxter. This Baxter Building was constructed in Earth's orbit and teleported into the vacant lot formerly occupied by the original Baxter Building and Four Freedoms Plaza.

Oh. OK, my bad.
Wait a minute. They built it in ORBIT and TELEPORTED IT INTO PLACE? What on Earth for? Why not just build a damn building in the vacant lot the same way as everyone else?

I suppose I can't argue with that, but about a hundred people must have had heart attacks when a skyscraper suddenly appeared from out of nowhere.

In Marvel Earth New York? It's just another day at the Big Apple to them. They're probably just relieved that Galactus isn't standing on top of it as it lands.

Yes, in Marvel Earth New York. People aren't THAT blase - they may be used to seeing flying guys fighting each other and so forth, but when the BIG stuff happens - such as, say, Galactus, giant monsters, Atlantean invasions, etc. - they notice, and they generally panic a bit. One of the central tenets of 'Marvels' is that, in between spectacular events happening, citizens of the MU are pretty 'meh' about most things, but when the spectacular stuff IS happening, they panic just like we would - and while a building appearing out of nowhere is not as 'holy crap' as Galactus deciding to drop by for a snack, I think it's something that would startle your average person.

New York City now has a skyscraper which is a sentient being and gets a month off every year to go sightseeing (cf the most recent Damage Control miniseries)

Uh? It does? Well, that's pretty wild, all right, but I'm guessing most New Yorkers aren't particularly aware of this fact - one month a year with a missing skyscraper is not much news in a city with thousands of 'em.
