One Perfect Moment: More Cap!
Greetings True Believers! I wanted to do another Captain America post for this week's event. These scans are from the mini-series "Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes" Issues 2 and 3. The mini is about the beginning of the Avengers, so naturally a huge sub-plot is the return of Captain America. These are "Rip Van Winkle" scans. It's about Cap in the new world, what he missed and how he feels. I've chosen what I think are the best ones. Enjoy!

Steve right after he wakes up from the ice.

I found this be both funny and sad. It made me think, "waking up decades in the future? Fuck!"

Jarvis and Rick Jones want to show Cap the new world. So Jones and Cap take a trip to the Capitol. This is right after visiting Bucky's grave.

Very Cap.

Man, I wish I was there with Cap on that one.

*saves this and the previous Cap Perfect Moment for instant access the next time someone says Cap is a lame, jingoistic, cheeseball boy scout*

Anything else you or anyone else would like to add to the pile of perfect Cap moments would be most welcome.

That last panel alone in the hands of the right writer could give you at least a year of character analysis and plot points. Not only is Captain America shocked by the world he's woken up in, he's ashamed that he wasn't there to fight for it. That's just amazing.

"Not only is Captain America shocked by the world he's woken up in, he's ashamed that he wasn't there to fight for it. That's just amazing."

That's another important part of Steve/Cap. He humbles us. He humbles normal people, heroes and Gods. The fact that he's heroic, brave, smart and strong isn't even the main part that humbles people. It's the fact that he does it because he believes it's right. And he's not aware of those things, it comes naturally for him and most wish they were that kind of person.

There is this great moment in the "Maximum Carnage" storyline.(I wish I still had the GN) The masses of New York have had worst parts of themselves brought out by the psionic villainess Shriek. They are rioting throughout New York. The heroes are trying to put a stop to it. One man grabs a brick and screams about windows and mirrors always laughing at him and showing what a failure he is. As he's about to hurl the brick at a storefront, he sees Cap's reflection in the window. He turns around and then they lock eyes. He drops the brick and whispers, "I'm sorry" That is a prime example of the effect Cap has on people.

I love scenes where the soldiers shoose to follow the lower-ranked (or even outright disgraced) leader instead of their actual commander. I remember being so moved when, as a child, I saw such a scene for the first time in Lady Oscar (The Rose of Versailles).

Me too. It's also why it pleased me to no end when my mom told me about how when my dad was a captain in the Air Force, she would frequently get enlisted soldiers coming up to her and telling her how much they like and respected my dad, just because he was one of the few officers who treated them as equals.

(I think that says more about military culture than it says about my dad, but what it says about my dad is pretty damn cool)

Aw, Cap. BE MORE PRECIOUS. I like how Tony left him a little note.

Did they show him learning about the good stuff, too? He must've liked hearing about the Civil Rights Movement and the moon landing and eradicating polio and so forth.

Ya know, I don't know of any moment where that has happened right off hand, but I'd very much like to see it.

And if it hasn't been, Captain America is going to read the name of every comic creator ever until they, too, are so ashamed that it wasn't done already.

There's "Avengers Classic 11" which was on old s_d.

Cap talks to Spider-Man about all kinds of things, including how the world changed and that he missed Jackie Robinson.

That's a hint of that kind of thing, anyway.

It's not the Unknown Soldier? I know that memorial has a perpetual flame... I didn't know there was another with that feature. I don't know what either memorial actually looks like though, so I'm not saying you're wrong. It just seems more appropriate for Cap, especially in this context.

I mean no disrespect to the artist of the above sequence when I say that his work reminds me a little of Frank Quitely. And that in turn makes me speculate what an "All Star Captain America," done by Morrison and Quitely would be like. I know some people are off Morrison completely. But I loved All Star Superman, and I think of Cap as Marvel's Superman equivalent. So if comparable levels of richness and sublimity could possibly be achieved, I'd love to see Morrison/Quitely on a similar CA project.

One of the biggest issues I have with America (being half-American myself) is how much hatred Vietnam War veterans seem to get. I don't understand why. I've seen movies and documentaries that show those attacks, but...

Why? Why so much hatred for them?

Maybe the war wasn't a direct assault on America, but the soldiers were doing their jobs.

That last scan nearly broke me, because of the sentiment it carries. Cap doesn't give a fuck whether the war was right or wrong, but he wants to know about those soldiers he was unable to help, and honor them, even if it's in such a small way.

(Reply to this) (Thread)

It's a hard question.
[info]proteus_lives

It's huge chunk of what tore America apart about Vietnam. I think it begins with two trains of thought.

The first was the conservitve(sp) who thought the war was a just effort and thought it was important to halt the spread of communism. To them we had the best military in the world so why couldn't we acheive a decisive victory over a small South Asian country? Many of them had fought in WWII and Korea so they didn't understand that the troops in Vietnam were fighting a different kind of war then they did. It made them bitter because they weren't used to losing. (Vietnam was the first American conflict since the War of 1812 were we weren't a 100% victorious.)

The other POV was the liberal one which opposed the war and thought it was a heartless campeign from several administrations concerned only with money and power. They sometimes saw the soldiers as enablers of an evil policy and called them things like "war-criminals, baby-killers and the like." Yes, soldiers got spit on. Some claim it never happened but I have seen evidence of it.

Both these hostile and negative POV's had a horrible effect on the morale of the American soldier in Vietnam. Someone said, "Vietnam wasn't lost on the battlefields but in the living rooms of America." Which brings up another important point, Vietnam was the first televised war. For the first time, the public got an eyeful of the horrors of war. It seriously threw people off-kilter. There are a hundred more things.

My dad is a Vietnam Vet and he's extremely bitter about the way he was treated when he got back. It started at the Seattle airport where he deplaned. He went into a bar for a drink and as he sat down a woman came up to him and called him a babykiller. Then she dumped her drink in his lap. He sat there for a couple minutes then went into a restroom, took off his uniform and never put it on again.

He said people sneered at him, whispered behind his back, looked at him with looks of pity but the worst he said was that Vets were ignored. His father came home from WWII to parades and respect. He got treated like he had the fucking plague. Hell, it makes me angry. I've been to the Wall in D.C. (My Dad won't go) and trust me it hits you like a emotional thunderbolt.

I think people have learned from it though, tons of people oppose the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan but are respectful to the soldiers. The theme is "Blame the war, not the warrior." It's true, the soldiers are doing their jobs and they deserve nothing but our respect and understanding.

My thoughts were kinda scattered but I hope this helps.
