What If...? #114 Daddy Doom
Given that it's Doom week and I've kinda wanted to post this for some time and it also has cross dimensional spawn and fun What if ness all packed into one I bring scans daily 10 pages (from a 32 page comic) about What if...the people who were abducted by the Beyonder stayed on Battleworld for 25 years and had to co-exist, unable to return home to Earth?

It's also one of my favorite if not THE one What If I've always wanted to see continued, especially given that it's ending lends itself to that...

The story opens with Balder Blake/Bravado's birthday party. (Balder being the son of Enchantress and Thor)

Among the couples we fins out in this Earth are Steve Rogers and Rogue (though she's called Carol and Jay Faerber the writer says that it means that Carol Danvers is the personality in control) and Storm and Wolverine. As well as Wasp and Human Torch which is a fun odd couple.

Over in Castle Doom...

Daddy Doom and son. Vincent Von Doom/Malefactor. His mother as said here is Enchantress, meaning he's half brothers with Bravado/Balder. I love how despite everything Doom still keeps to himself but even he has gotten a tad nicer, not causing havok and having ulterior schemes and whatnot in this universe.

That's pretty awesome, Professor X in an Iron Man suit to get around. And we see the memorials of the heroes who died in this universes Secret War which resulted in the Beyonder and Galactus dying, stranding the rest here.

Back at Castle Doom

Malefactor decides to become the ruler of Battleworld much like Doom would've done back on Earth.

This leads him to recruiting the kids of the former villains who aren't all that evil since everbody's more or less friends except for dear old Malefactor but in the end it causes the heroes kids to come together as their own ragtag Avengers.

Steve is one of the first to notice the kids went somewhere when trying to find one of his belongings...

Kids on that page.

Sara Rogers/Crusader (Steve and Rogue, from Rogue has inherited Ms. Marvel's super strength)
Matthew Storm/Firefly (Human Torch and Wasp's son)
Clinton Barton Jr./ Mustang (She-Hulk and Hawkeye's son)
Balder Blake/Bravado (Thor and Enchantress as said earlier)
Kendall Logan/Torrent (Storm and Wolverine's daughter)

Then some fighting begins with Malefactor and Bravado fighting with Bravado losing. Sadly he can't pick up his dad's hammer which probably would be enough to beat up Malefactor...

But dear old Crusader CAN pick it up and dual wielding her dad's shield and Thor's hammer out awesomes Malefactor.

But before they can get to him and beat him up...

Ouch, Doom killed Enchantress? That was pretty damn mean.

Doom poofs off with Malefactor and then expositiony story happens.

Hulk who seperated himself from the others ever since the Secret Wars has been trying to think of a way home (this Hulk seems to be equal parts Banner and Hulk) and has finally succeeded. But the parents are worried about going back to Earth since they've come to love this world and decide not to take Hulk's way home, especially after the Watcher pops up leaving everyone to think that it means that their decision could lead to something huge.

The kids shortly after however decide to break their parents decision and go to Earth themselves to scope it out.

They run into a Sentinel almost immediately...

And so endeth a monumentally awesome story that I wish would've gotten the Spider-girl treamtment and continued.

Hope you liked the story as I did. Choosing pages was REALLY hard and much more awesome exists in the other pages so if you ever see it I heartily suggest you pick it up.

Or at the very least, have The Exiles pop in.

True true. I hear they also popped up in one of the last issues of Avengers Forever but too my knowledge didn't do anything.

Sigh. It makes me so sad.

THIS was the only good idea What If? story from the second series. They was enough energy and story for its own series. Much better then the original secret wars...

I don't know about THAT. They had a bunch of stories that were fun. But only this and Spider-girl seemed to have any real way to continue or reason to.

I also liked What if Blink lived. If Punisher Killed Spiderman. Silver Surfer Possessed the Infinity Gauntlet. And if the FF's second child had lived among others though I will say the good stories WERE rather few.

I could never bring myself to read those. Especially since I never knew what I was gonna get. At least with the other What If's the title would give me a clue.

It was ok but silly, aside from Impossible Man. It irked me that the Infinity Gauntlet there wasn't able to really fix anything.

"What if... the X-Men and New Mutants had remained in Asgard?" was a fun story for those whp stayed (and meant Doug not only survived, but prospered) but also left a new iteration of X-Men back on Midgard it would have been fun to follow.

All the implications around Spider-Man's fate here were infinitely interesting and creepy. THIS makes me appreciate the original Symbiote origin better--I usually prefer (and still do, this just makes me appreciate it better) the later revisions, where it's a more simple accidental drop-off on Earth mixing with Astronaut Jameson's exploits, or a result of genetic engineering from Earth.

Doom Jr. is rendered disturbingly hot.

Ditto that it would've been cool if this got the Spider-Girl treatment.

And I do just really enjoy the concept of them actually being stuck on another world that long, settling down, and growing to get along with former foes.

Well, it wasn't posted here, but in this issue, during the big fight, Klaw (or maybe someone else, I think it was Klaw) blasts Spidey with a sonic weapon, temporarily driving the symbiote off.... and revealing that all that was left was a bare skeleton.

So yeah.

Yeah it's a pretty fun thing to think about. That if you placed a bunch of heroes and villains together that they'd eventually all just hang out and becomes buddies and the bad guys would reform.

I've always found how Venom's origin was tweaked in animation's kinda funny. I remember one day just kinda thinking of the two and realizing how different they were. Like an executive looked at Venom's origin and decided "Fuck it, let's give an abridged version" and it became canon for the media interpretations thereafter.

Le sigh. Maybe if I bug Marvel enough. It annoys me the most because they have that whole Genext thing going on in Marvel right now sporadically making up new characters when they could've just continued this instead.

XD. Dimensional spawn are always fun. It's why I lurp the Exiles and their character like Magnus (Magneto and Rogue's son, Nocturne (Nightcrawler and Scarlet Witch's daughter) or Panther (Storm and Black Panther's son) and so on. This issue had my love of What If's, dimensional spawn and awesome altogether. Though I should expect as much since it's by Jay Faerber who publishes the awesome Dynamo 5.

Firefly makes me giggle every time. Johny and Janet are such Prima Donna pretty people it makes so much sense for them to hook up. Poor kid. His parents probably baby him like hell too.

Yeah Mustang's hair looked blond a few places, I assume it was the artist just trying to keep his skin and hair color different enough to not look weird, or it's just super shiny which is possible.

Without a doubt one of my favorite What Ifs. Such a great pilot, sad it never got picked up like Spider-Girl. The team does leave a little to be desired with powers, I think, especially in the cases of Torrent and Firefly. I do really like the idea behind Mustang, which is that super-strong archer means super-strong force behind arrows. I'd like to see a member or two join with exiles at some point, even for a little while.

You could have had some fun with Firefly, like the smaller he is, the hotter his flame burns, so he could be dangerous at 5", but at 1.2" he's like the tip of a thermal lance...

*pumps the air with his fist* YES! I read this issue back when it came out, in the 'comics and magazines' aisle of the local Safeway, and didn't buy it, and have been regretting that ever since. It's rare that I remember an individual issue so clearly, but everything here is just as I remembered it. I remember thinking that Malefactor was an INCREDIBLY COOL villain - if nothing else, I loved the look; that metal ninja-mask is great - I remember thinking much the same thing about Torrent - basically, I remember it all, especially the ending where Malefactor gets spirited away for... punishment. Oh, I gotta lay my hands on this now!
