NuSpidey status quo: OH SHIT STAN LEE'S GOING ROGUE
Stan Lee to Marvel: "Fuck you, and fuck your retcons."

Robot 6 @ Comic Book Resources >> Fan letters save Spider-Man’s marriage — in the comic strip

At the beginning of the year, the Spider-Man newspaper strip received a bit of a makeover that brought it in step with comic book continuity. Echoing “Brand New Day,” the strip reverted Peter Parker to an unmarried student living with his Aunt May. Mephisto not included, it was just an abrupt change to the status quo.

“In keeping with the new Spider-Man story line at Marvel Comics, we, too, are going back to Spidey’s roots. He’s single, and attending college. Now let the surprises begin!” the editors wrote back in January.

Well, surprise! — fans of the strip weren’t very happy with the change. The editors have decided to “bow to your letters” and return the strip to the previous set-up. Writing off the last few months as a dream, Peter Parker woke up today to find his wife, in a Dallas-style homage, getting ready to shower:

I saw the Comics Curmudgeon page and was all, "Tsh, saw it coming."

I've got my fingers crossed for Brand New Day going the same way, so we can bury it and forget it forever. Ugh.

I'm looking at a couple of litmus-test issues here:

1. June sales. Even a few NuSpidey supporters have noted that the recently reported April sales estimates seem a bit high, and they've speculated that this might owe something to Diamond using Battle for the Cowl as its estimate metric, rather than Batman itself. If this theory is true, June's reported estimates might give us a better idea of how the title is really doing (until then, though, I'm simply assuming that April's numbers are what they are).

2. Sales immediately following Amazing Spider-Man #600. Completists will be that much less likely to drop the book, the closer it gets to an anniversary issue, but once that mark passes, I can easily conceive of #600 being a perfect "jumping off" point for a lot of folks.

You know what I really want (and I think Box may agree with me on this)?

Spidey somehow forcing Mephisto to undo the retcon. I mean, in a story. A well written, fleshed-out story, not a "It was all a dream" scenario because of how many people and stories were affected by BND.

I'm not saying, "let the entire world know he was Parker"; but I remember Dan Slott almost undoing the unmasking by making the Scarlet Spiders camouflage themeslves as Parker, causing confusion about him really being Spidey... but I guess I'm just hoping for too much.

Aw, Stan Lee cares what the fans think. Unlike some people.

I'm reminded of the debate back on the old SD about whether Stan was somehow expressing his dislike for the new Spidey status quo with his comments about the change in the newspaper strip. I'm taking this as a sign that the "Stan hates OMD too" thing was not entirely wishful thinking on the part of the fans.

Best related Comics Curmudgeon reader comment:

So, wait, hold on. Rewind a few weeks and we find that the newspaper Spider Man has reworked itself similar to the mainstream comics. Both audiences are outraged, but the newspaper one corrects itself. This means that… the newspaper-reading audience that has kept Family Circus alive for decades is, in fact, more powerful than all the world’s comic nerds? Man, that’s gotta hit the comic nerds something rough.

Now I've heard it said that the reason newspaper comics are so overly-cautious and stagnant these days is that the average age of their readers is much higher than it used to be. Lot of seniors, apparently (hey, only seniors--like senior seniors--could actually find Family Circus and Pluggers entertaining). And apparently, a large number of such readers got Stan Lee to reverse course. So here's my idea for reversing OMD/BND in the comic books as well: we get in touch with the American Association of Retired Persons--a quite powerful lobby group I understand--and enlist their support in taking on Quesada. We may have to cut deals with AARP in return, say helping them lobby the newspapers and syndicates to keep Marmaduke and Mary Worth, but that's how the game is played. :-)

I think there's a real Through The Looking Glass difference between superhero comic books versus most other media, in that most other media are arguably TOO cautious and TOO conciliatory toward their audiences, whereas superhero comic books almost seem to operate off a system of deliberate and overt contempt toward their own audience (well, okay, the music industry is like this, too, but only in terms of DISTRIBUTION, whereas superhero comic books are like this in terms of CONTENT). When readers protest changes made to books and characters they enjoy, they're LITERALLY INSULTED by the same people who are trying to get them to BUY those products. Every time I read an interview with Quesada or DiDio, I come away with the genuine belief that they would both be willing to bankrupt their own companies, just to SPITE their audiences.

Hate to burst the bubble, but this was their plan from the get-go.

Roy Thomas: "After one adventure which takes place before MJ and Peter were married (but does NOT involve any retro stuff, deals with the Mephisto, etc.), the Spidey strip will return to its fomer continuity, in which MJ and Peter are alive and well and married and living in New York."

http://www.comicscommunity.com/boards/tony/?frames=n;read=190071&expand=1

You know how where I found that link? Someone posted it on the old scans_daily the very next day after the strip that announced the change. All this stuff about bowing to fan demand is just a publicity stunt.

Huh. Yes, I actually remember that now.

Which ... only makes this weirder. I mean, Stan is pretty much the ultimate get-along guy, in terms of claiming that pretty much ANY shit that Marvel comes out with is somehow Pure Gold, so ... if he's INTENTIONALLY making this sound like it's a case of The Fandom Rejects This New Status Quo in retrospect, then ... well, there's really no way that it CAN'T be read as a slam against Marvel, is there?

Seeing how the response to people complaining about Marvel Divas was more or less "if you don't like it, you are not really a Marvel reader. We are right, you are wrong," I have my hopes low for this reflecting on the mainstream Marvel Universe.

Still, is good to know Stan Lee still is the guy that cares about what his readers say.
