The Blackest Night Falls From The Skies, The Darkness Grows As All Light Dies... yadda yadda yadda
Marvel Zombies? Hah! Darkest Night? Been there, done that!

And we didn't need no stinking Black Lanterns... From 1993, we have this Post 5-year Gap/Pre-Zero hour story of the Legion of Superheroes... Prepare for a LOT of deadites..

Basically, as part of a long arc by Mordru the Mystic (Evil wizard and judging by the hat, a Shriner), the dead are rising, and given this is the 30th Century, that includes a LOT of familiar faces... It's very much a game of spot the zombie here, so my apologies if the pages seem a little incoherent, I went for the ones with some recognisable faces on them... The spell has just been cast, and you can tell that it's not a good spell when the last line reads like that first caption box does...

On the plus side, at least Val had the decency to wear a black singlet under his jacket, if this had been more like the discoWing outfit, it would be even LESS pretty

Middle panel includes Sun Boy, Magnetic Kid, Tripliocate Girl (in the purple cape) and Reflecto.

And it's not just superheroes who are rising....

That's Garridan Ranzz, son of retired Legion founder Garth "Lightning Lad" Ranzz, he's wearing the fancy suit because he carries a disease that is lethal to everyone except him. This is not a good time to introduce him to Granny and Grandpa Ranzz one feels...

The Legion is short staffed, and this is a galaxy wide threat, so Rokk Krinn (The depowered Cosmic Boy) has no choice, but to accept some new members who are NOT standard Legionnaire material. I include this panel, because it's great, and just how many of the tropes they represent would go on to become staples of the mid to late 90's comic era on the heroes. At least here the excuse is they are all emmbers of the Khund Empire, who make Klingons look like peacenik hippies.

Heh, something tells me this bunch might have a problem with the "No killing" rule of the LSH...

A mission team heads towards planet Sklar... where the spell is believed to have originated....

Okay, long time Legion fans see if you can spot the original Beast Boy from the Heroes of Lallor (Well, in terms of introduction into the comicverse if not chronologically WITHING that comicverse) Mentalla, a Hawkman, assorted Darkstars, Jonah Hex (probably) and Hal Jordan (Who wasn't dead at this point, but soon would be... foreshadowing perhaps? :)

And who can this happy little hero be...

Hmmm.... Jason wasn't at his cutest was he... but he does display the usual Robin tenacity.. Losing an arm and STILL attacking... He'd probably go through the entire "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" routine "Tis but a fleshwound", if it weren;t for the whole being a possessed zombie thing...

Firefist has a nice line in deathless dialogue (no pun intended).

And so we say goodbye to Golden Age Atom, Golden Age Flash, what might be Ch'p (or possibly Rocky the Flying Squrrel) and Skyman (the former Star Spangled Kid from Infinity Inc)

And of course it wouldn't be a "dead rise" event without HER making an appearance here...

And this panel is in there for the Shining Knight and Winged Victory...

Yeah, that's the problem with zombie attacks, for every guy YOU lose, they GAIN one...

Killer Forst, Mindboggler, Golden Eagle and the Golden Age Mr Terrific re-meet their makers...

I was never a fan of the original Vigilante, but that was COLD! And Vi, there's a time and a place to make comments on Ayla's backside...

I could learn to like Flederweb...

And it's goodnight Mirror Master and that might be Arak, Son of Thunder

And that's Silver Sorceress

And just when the OTHER heroes have more or less been dealt with.. this little lot show up...

I never liked their redesign of Block, but it's Magnetic Kid's sticking out tongue which always creeps me out in that pic...

Magnetic Kid was Cosmic Boy's kid brother, a Legion Academy graduate who joined the Legion when his big brother left (He was in the same induction group as Tellus, Quislet, Sensor Girl and Polar Boy). He was a fun, old fashioned character who joined the long list of characters from the era who I liked and who all met pretty pointless and messy demises... In his case, sacrificing himself to unlock the bad guys homebase during the Magic Wars. (See also; Ramsey, D / Payton, W / Fischer, S etc...)

Clearly Bloodclaw wasn't in Cyborg class on the day they covered "Fighting Magnetism Manipulators, is it always one sided?"

I like that Bloodclaw's fear isn't dying, that's to be expected for a Khund, but to die by his own hand! (Well, not actually his own hand since it's not him controlling said hands, but you know what I mean)

The heroes have discovered that there is a time limit on the "dead rising" spell, of 99 hours... Or so they think....

I also like that they are trying to reflect how the characters died in their zombiebness. Triplicate Girl's original body was reduced to ash by Computo, so she's essentially a walking pile of cinders... As was Karate Kid.

It turns out the 99 hour limit was a ploy by Mordru. As long as the heroes continued to think they ONLY had to fight for 99 hours, they would exhaust themlseves doing so, since they would think they could relax after 99 hours... So the deadline comes and goes and they're still around.

Luckily they DO deduce how to break the spell and the zombies find their sustaining magic is being...

and thus ended the great DC Zombie uprising.

Of note are the fact that most (but not all) of the dead heroes they used were already dead (or about to die) in the presentday DCU, so they weren't contradicting any plotlines which might come along later. Which means no zombie Superman, or Wonder Woman or the like...

I'm always interested in how they assume these people look when they come back as zombies. Like, some of the people who seem to be coming back for the next Zombie-fest I'm sure would no longer have any skin whatsoever. Which would be the case for most of them here, yes? (Also are we to assume they were all buried in their costumes? Jason wasn't, so I feel like he must have been issued a rotting version.)

This is probably not the sort of thing I should be thinking on seeing these guys, of course...

Well, since he's buried on an asteroid in deep space, one assumes that he was reburied in his Robin costume at a later date... or else this is Zarkwin Flord, the Saturnian Robin from the 26th Century! :

Well, they could've used anyone they wanted, even Batman or Superman, in theory. I mean, everyone dies, you know?

Considering how many centuries had passed since several of these characters had died, I think it's safe to say these aren't the original corpses. :p

Oh a little necromantic energy goes a long way towards pulling the handy bits and pieces together... ummm... or so I've heard!

It makes me imagine somebody watching the pieces get put together and built back up until they hit the exact balance between looking like they're rotting and being unrecognizable as who they were. Because if you can get them this far you'd think they could just make them look normal. Including their clothes. But then they wouldn't be as scary.

"Let the unrelenting anguish begin!"

I'm hoping that the unrelenting anguish actually relents at some point soon.

Further down, I think that's Scalphunter, not Arak, Son of Thunder.

Good catch on Vigilante, I'd missed him completely,

Don't think that's Scalphunter though, he wore a yellow headband, but Arak wore gold jewellery at the end of his braids where Brian Savage didn't.

As noted in her first scan, she's Veilmist, a teleporter, and property of Firefist (The Khunds have slavery of "lesser" species).

In a nice little gag, Firefist later goes more psycho than usual and tries to kill Devlin O'Ryan, a Legionnaire with the power to reflect any and all attacks on him back on the attacker. Firefist doesn't survive, and Veilmist immediately, and under Khund law, considers Devlin to be her new owner and husband. Flederweb offers his rather terse congratulations to the new husband and expresses the hope that he "will last longer than the last five". Sadly, or possibly mercifully for Devlin, it's annulled when Veilmist discovers he's still a legal minor.

I loved the 5YG-Giffen/Bierbaum run, but this was where things started to get pretty silly. Then we got to Legion On The Run with McGraw and, oh dear. I still wish there had been no reboot, though I enjoy a lot of the Archie Legion.

I NEVER recognize Immonnen--he seems to never draw the same twice.

What I want to know is: you know what's really dark? The sector of that blind GL in another old Moore story I'm sure Johns has read, who thinks of his ring as "the F-Sharp Bell." Which is a little beyond Kilowog's--his makes a sound, but this guy's either works on or simulates sound.

It would be interesting if he were brought back into things. What difference would darkness make to him?

Literally none, because Rot Lop Fan, the F-Sharp Bell can't comprehend the very concept of darkness - "In untranslateable untranslateable, in untranslateable untranslateable.... No evil shall escape my untranslateable" as the ring translation ended up.

If it was only the colours that were the problem, he'd be fine, it's more that the ghastly horrible zombie things would still be there...
