Star Trek: Better living through changing the rules.
Star Trek XI opened and IMHO kicked ass, and has a test mentioned in WRATH OF KHAN. But we've seen Kirk taking the Kobayashi Maru test before... sort of. In DC Comics' STAR TREK (Vol. 2) #73, we see Cadet Kirk. (Some minor spoilers for Star Trek XI after the cut.)
And the day is saved... even though it wasn't supposed to be saved.
Kobayashi Maru is the title of two Star Trek novels. The TOS novel has various characters (Kirk, Scotty, Chekov) relating what they did on the Kobayashi Maru simulation. The Enterprise novel explains the original Kobayashi Maru and why it became the No-Win Scenario. Other Star Trek novels explain who did what when they took the Kobayashi Maru.
Another "take" on this story (in one of the "Strange New Worlds" anthology books) had Kirk reprogramming the computer to make the playing field "fair" but not guaranteeing he would succeed in saving the Kobayashi Maru.
James gets a stern talking-to by his girlfriend.
Some fans believe that Kirk surviving the purge on Tarsus IV as a boy (TOS episode "Conscience of the King") is why he doesn't believe in the No-Win Scenario.
The academy brass want to "talk" to James. Uh-oh.
Carol Marcus talks with Gary Mitchell. Fans think Carol is the "blond technician" that Kirk and Gary talk about in "Where No Man has Gone Before." In that episode, Kirk comments he almost married her.
I wonder if Kirk said "Why are you talking to me, maaaaan?" to the Academy teachers.
The punishment for "changing the rules"? Pillow attack!
The movie did Rock with a capital R, but Carol and Gary aren't in Star Trek XI. McCoy takes over the "Jim's best friend in the Academy" duties. Aside from a throwaway line from McCoy, Christine Chapel isn't mentioned. Janice Rand isn't in the movie either. Seems like they always forget Chapel and Rand. Jerks.
