The Network
So, unsurprisingly, we were a lot better off when the women were being completely excluded from BATTLE FOR THE COWL.

As shown in the preview, Hugo Strange has three hostages, and wants Batman to rescue one, at which point he'll kill the others.

He's got people betting on this in an underground casino, as well, and he keeps changing the rules. Helena and Cass are assigned to a convicted Death Row inmate; Cass startles Helena with her ninja routine and Helena almost shoots her.

Oh what the damn hell no. Not even pre-Birds Helena would pull that shit. Even if she were that batshit immoral Punisher dumbfuck nonsense, which she is not and has never been, even at her darkest (like Bruce or Babs would have tolerated her for ten seconds if she were, I mean really), she would have to be possessed of a truly unparalleled stupidity to assume Hugo was playing straight and she'd actually accomplish anything by shooting the dude - hell, it's a huge and unwarranted assumption that that's even the guy Hugo says it is, forget believing that Hugo will actually let the others go.

Oh but it gets worse, my friends.

They get down to the wire, and Helena takes the shot.

Cass stops her.

OH HOLY FUCK YOU DID NOT. You did NOT just put her ass back in that outfit for the sole reason of giving Cass something to mock her about (in true ZOMG ELOQUENT Beechen style). You did not. It seems that the costume change was deliberate on Daniel's part. So, we actually have Fabes blaming Helena for Tony Daniel's massive fucking stupidity, rather than Fabes blaming Helena for his own massive fucking stupidity. That is not actually an improvement, and does not excuse the jobbing even a little bit, just for reference.

This cannot be Fabian Nicieza. It just can't. Surely, Nicieza is a better writer than a twelve-year-old baby!fan doing a pathetic, half-assed misspelled Buffy-bashing fic about how stupid and evil and incompetent and slutty she is because she's standing in the way of the TWU WUV of Spike and Angel. Surely he cannot think that the very best way to help repair Cass is to have Helena job to her in the most pathetic OOC possible way both physically and ethically.

Because dammit, I don't want to put Fabes on the Winick list. But dear God is he trying for it with this fucking atrocious writing.

If incompetent Helena is the price we have to pay for competent Cass, I will gladly pay that price.

Aaron "The Mad Whitaker" Bourque; of course, I never liked Helena all that much anyway.

And then there's a second joke about her outfit later on: Bet you really regret going back to that outfit now... when she sends her into the sewer.

Which really bugged me. Because it's not like I can't see how uncomfortable and ridiculous that outfit looks. So why stick her into it (presumably for the entertainment of male fans?) and then act like the silly woman is just so dumb she's the one who doesn't realize how dumb it is. Not only is it annoying, it just points up the bad idea of creating the costume to begin with to be so patently absurd for running around in.

All I know of these characters I learnt here, but why would Huntress even assume that Cass-Batgirl wouldn't know how to cheat? Isn't she.. the most likely person ever to not even realise that cheating was cheating?

Also: BOOOO on the outfit-stuff. BOOO.

My insanely grudgey fanwank theory:

Quesada and DiDio are both intentionally fucking up their companies' female characters so badly that (they hope) female readers will actually be GRATEFUL when female characters don't appear AT ALL.

Both men have always given me a very strong sense of GODDAMMIT WHY ARE THERE GIRLS READING COMICS ANYWAYS, and whether it's conscious or not on their part, I honestly do believe that they'd prefer to drive out those female readers, even if it means making less money.

Not that I'm a fan of Huntress' outfit, but crimefighters who look like they were dressed by the Other Mother in Coraline really have no room to talk.

I'm sorry. When did DCU become a One Tree Hill bitch fight between the female characters? It ready like a badly filed off Brooke and Peyton fighting over Lucas (again!) fanfic. What's up with some of the art, too? There's a couple frames that look those online faces (^_^)? Was someone feeling lazy that day? From reading the random scans and wikis, Cass seemed to be much better than this.

We won't discuss Huntress. I really, really don't discuss the WTF of my favorite character. All my ragey statement will get me banned.

I was worried that the "You don't know how to cheat!" thing would work for Huntress under the same logic as "Then I WON'T use any techniques and just hit you HARD AND FAST lol".

But yeah, Helena just accepting the terms handed to her like that is pretty ridiculous.

Also, is Oracle channeling the guy from Saw in that last scan? "I want to play a game..."

I said earlier that I would be very disappointed if Hugo wasn't in full "No, I'm Batman!" mode.

Come on people, it's a villain obsessed with becoming Batman! And nobody could think of anything better than this to do with him for Battle for the Cowl?

Excellent, I knew I wasn't the only one who was like, "Um when has Helena acted like this before?" And I just couldn't remember anytime she do something this stupid. Even more for the fact that it turned out if she killed the hostage he was an innocent, which adds more to the slap in the face to her.

But again I love Cass in this, she was still all, "There had to be another option for everyone to make it out alive. Killing isn't the answer." That's so totally Cass there.

Still, Helena was a real bitch in this issue too. Besides that her remarks into not wanting to team up with Cass either kinda peeved me off. I think Fabian was going all in for the reader to totally dislike Helena in this.

Characterization: u r doing it rong.

Characterization: too many letters for DC to bother remembering.

Characterization, do you speak it?

Apart from that, I've actually liked most of everything I read by Winick, but would like to know what are his offenses. (I reserve the right to go LALALALALA. I like Winick. ;_;)

I am so mailing a copy of this to DC offices and dedicating it to tony daniel. Shame helena looked like a fool, but maybe this will make some folks think twice before they decide to use that stupid costume. Doubt it, but damn if it doesn't make me smile to think this annoyed fans of the Jim Lee costume. *runs off to ask Tony Daniel if he's read it yet.*

While it's nice to see competent Cass, I hafve to say:

Can modern comic writers not make one heroic character competent at the expence of another heroic character?

It's lazy, stupid and predicatble.

I was worried that this would be the issue where Cass was expelled from the Bats through some stupid contrivance.
