The Death Patrol #3 and #5

By Military Comics #3 "The Death Patrol" has fallen to the back pages, appearing as the last story in the issues. This is Jack Cole's last time on the title.

Scan from Golden Age Comics.co.uk. These scan have been altered and resized.

Now, I know I said that none of the "infamous racist stuff will make this cut," but I lied. I was just going to add this post to my site, but since I was to post the story from #6, I might as well add this here.

In #4 Dave Berg has taken over Death Patrol. At the start of the issue he brings in Chief Chuck-a-Lug. In #5 he will bring in King Hotentot and a long time Patrol member doesn't make it back. See in under the cut!

Scan from GM. A very small bit of resizing on a few of the pages.

When I first heard of Death Patrol it was with a sigh and a nod. The nod came for trying to give the good guys some racial diversity. The sigh was for their depiction. Any thoughts, S_d?

If that's just too heavy for everyone, who would you ship? Hank/Zazzy anyone?

Stay Tuned! In our next episode Hitler sends out women to seduce the boys! We also meet Boris the Borsht Eater.

(So not for dial-up)

Is Del Van Dyne an Aryan Übermensch?

They turned Zazzy into The TF2 Scout! BONK!

I kinda liked him, even if he didn't have much of a personality in the first story. :p

Also, good lord, THIS IS THE SAME GUY FROM MAD MAGAZINE?!

His work from 1941-42 is noticeably different in four or five years.

"Well gentlemen, there's my plan for a comic that'll promote racial equality!"
"Are you...umm...quite sure that's what it is?"
"Of course! The African boiled the Nazi in a pot like a savage cannibal. Nobody likes Nazis, right? Go ink it!"

The thing is... I can see that dialog being inked as a Dave Berg The Lighter Side Of...

try imagining King Hotentot's dialogue with a British accent. doesn't completely remove the cringe factor, but adds some amusement.

That was my reaction: the visuals are pure Angelfood McSpade, but at least the dialogue isn't ooga-booga (or, for that matter, Chief Chuckalug*'s me-no-speakum-good).

*And is that name some sort of reference to alcoholism? Good grief, even for the Forties...
