Inherit the Earth
Four scans apiece from Dark Reign: The Cabal, relating to Doctor Doom, and from Ms. Marvel #38, featuring Moonstone.
So, Dark Reign: The Cabal is an anthology with five eight-page stories about various members of the group (everyone except Norman); Emma's is by Matt Fraction, which makes sense; Loki gets Peter Milligan; Namor by Kieron Gillen; and the Hood Rick Remender (who's currently writing him in Punisher). Doctor Doom's is by Jonathan Hickman, which is useful to look at since he's the next Fantastic Four writer, so you'd expect Doom to be showing up there (indeed, he's said as much). Doom's is, I guess, supposed to be a fantasy of his. It begins at the end of Doom and Namor's conversation in Secret Invasion: Dark Reign, and, after Namor asks what happens with Osborn, Doom flashes ahead to one year in the future, where he and Namor and meeting with Osborn again (the Dark Avengers are also present); Osborn notes that Emma, Loki, and the Hood haven't shown up. In the case of the latter, it's because Doom killed him and stole his magic cape, as well as... If you're wondering where the Hood got the cosmic cube and why he didn't just use it himself, well...hey look, bunnies! It's not really important, especially since this is a fantasy, but it's an odd choice of plot devices, since there are any number of other things Hickman could have used here. Doom is a strong advocate for a woman's proper place: adorning Doom's throne. Elsewhere, the first issue of Ms. Marvel focussing on the erstwhile Moonstone (of course, if you've seen the solicits for July, this looks to be pretty temporary); after killing some bank robbers (who themselves killed people) to public applause, she returns to Avengers Tower and is sent by Norman to be the first of the team for a psych evaluation. The doctor turns out to be an invasive psychic himself, and he starts beating up on her and sifting through her memories to torment her, particularly wondering why she wasn't there to save her mother when she burned to death in an apartment fire, after mom had worked so hard to get her through university. The doc monologues that he was a fan of Carol, and isn't too hot on her being replaced by a supervillain. Seriously, dude, just kill her. But he stupidly doesn't, and back inside her head Moonstone monologues that she hated being such a disappointment to mom, what with the criminality and all... Oh, and Doc looks like the Hulk here because he used that form to beat her up. She kills him. See what I said about just killing her, Doc? Good effort, though.

Karla killed her own mom? Ugh, lame Reed. Evenmore so than usual.
Glad to see at least one law enforcement time being unwilling to just stand by while Norman does his thing. They barely like each other in the real world, I doubt they'd just stand by and let Norman get away with his crap.
But this is Marvel, where law enforcement is a group mind, sigh...
I don't really see the issue there; she's a sociopath. Was introduced as one, has generally always been one.

A shame, I was hoping the Doom bit would end with Namor being chained to Doom's throne as a scantily clad lust bunny for his pleasure too!
A psychiatrist who is dealing with a known cold blooded killer doesn't suspect that she was behind a mysterious death in her past? Well, HE'S too stupid to live I'm afraid.
I prefer the sort of similar Warren Ellis written interrogation of Pete Wisdom in Excalibur, where the evil psychic strips back Pete's bad memories to make him relive them and discovers to his own horror that the real memories lurking underneath is even WORSE and Peter is already more than aware of them!
A shame, I was hoping the Doom bit would end with Namor being chained to Doom's throne as a scantily clad lust bunny for his pleasure too!
What makes you think he isn't? Doom loves choking.
I'm sorry but the image of Emma and girl-Loki chained to Doom's throne is ridiculously stupid. (Bonus ridiculousness for the porn star look for girl-Loki.)
You know somehow I'd expect them to look a little more perturbed and less pin-up like, what with them being chained up against their will and all.
Now I want to see the "The Secret Life of Doctor Doom" mini. (Pocketa, pocketa, pocketa...)
Of course it would have been even better if each of his fantasies had involved Reed Richards being humiliated in some way, perhaps just as a detail in the background.

*facepalm*...Damn Doombot.
Isn't that just limiting the pages a comic not how many comics they can post?
In neither case are there more than four.

Icon time! Pardon the crappy clone brush job. But it felt appropriate.
But do you really want him?
Is this side to Karla something that's been used before? She had some backstory expose in Thunderbolts and I can never remember her being a psychopath. Calculating, ruthless, power-hungry, yes. But... this? It feels like out of left field, and like it greatly diminishes the character.

She has killed for the sake of convenience at least once before that we've seen. I have no real problem believing she'd do it again without a single qualm, particularly if someone irked her at a personal level.
Karla's basically the Marvel Universe's Hannibal Lecter, right? Brilliant, manipulative/sociopathic psychiatrist? Who's to say that anything she's showing her psychic voyeur actually happened in reality?
So apparently Doom writes his own fan fiction. Somehow, that does not surprise me.
You know he forces every reader to review it.
His 26-part Lord of the Rings opus depicts his epic quest to locate and defeat of all the ring-bearers, before confronting Sauron and becoming the true master of the One Ring.
Clearly Doom went to the Jabba-the-Hutt school of Women's Rights. Unrelated: I tried doing Emma's pose, but that shit is nigh impossible. She's more flexible than I.
UNF that Granov art, it is the sexy. *licks*
I love how in Doom's fantasy, he pwns not only the Hood, but EVERY ONE ELSE IN THE GROUP. Oh, Victor, so ambitious. Never change. I will admit it was cool seeing him wearing that cloak though (won't call it a hood ugh, I'm with you Namor).
-- Did Karla KILL the guy, or did she just rip his arm off and let him bleed or something? Maybe I wasn't paying attention when I read this earlier today (still not buying the book; I paid for Ms. Marvel, not Ms. Moonstone rar)

When Emma breaks loose, Hell hath no fury like a humiliated Ms Frost. She needs to save the Leia costume for Scott.
Good thing Carol was killed off so we could have more of... this. Yay. It's like Marvel just doesn't want me to read any of their books. Wake me up when Dark Reign is over. |
