CADBURY

Herbert Arthur Runcible Cadbury, held the distinct title of "World's Greatest Butler".... Normally, in this preface here, I'd provide you with some information on the character, like his first appearance and who created him....
The internet has failed me. All I've come up with is that Cadbury started to appear sometime in the mid-1960s and continued as a regular supporting character until Harvey Publishing folded in the 1980s.

from RICHIE RICH & CADBURY #2, September 1978

Who invented Cadbury? Well, P.G Wodehouse, of course, in the long view of things.

Congratulations; you've just inspired legions of Fry and Laurie fans to start shipping Cadbury/Mr. Rich.

The proximity of the words Cadbury and Rich reminds me so much of the delicious and precious cream eggs that when I run out I might actually start slashing them no matter what my Fry and Laurie inclinations may be...

When I was a kid I thought that the candy was named after the butler. Which wasn't so completely stupid, given Peter Pan peanut butter and Kayo syrup(yes, that is in fact a licensed brand, and the Kayo in the name is from Moon Mullins, and this is the last scrap of his existence on earth, how sad).

I always liked the way Cadbury was drawn. And isn't Wodehouse public domain now? I think it'd be funny to take Richie Rich stories and detourn them with Jeeves & Wooster dialogue.

Richie Rich's dad has a disturbing head.

He looks like if Steve Forbes decided to undergo plastic surgery to more closely resemble Pac Man.

He reminds me of Disney's Tweedle Dum/Dee.

Is it me, or do the scientists look like they've just escaped from a Tintin book. They have a very Herge look to them...

Thank you, most gracious [info]peur_evol. Cadbury is indeed my favourite character in the line of Harvey humorous-etching periodicals (or, as my young charge has just corrected me, "comic books").

The first test is anti-tank missiles? Couldn't they shoot him or something, at least that isn't guaranteed to kill him if the suit does fail.

I have to say, while I still hate Richie Rich, Cadbury was one of his least objectionable supporting characters - it's difficult to go wrong with someone that unflappable. I have one comic that has him WALK ACROSS THE BOTTOM OF A RIVER to retrieve a lost hat - all without dropping his properly butlerly posture for an instant. He's not as good as Alfred, but hey, who is?
That being said, this is a pretty damn lame comic. It looks like it's going somewhere, but then it just kind of... ends. There isn't even a proper punchline. While I turn sour as a lemon - no, make that a lime, I like lemons - sour as a lime over Harvey comics, even I have to admit that most of their stories ended with a reasonably serviceable gag. This one doesn't even do that. Bah phooey.

Why don't you tell us how you really feel about Harvey comics? Maybe go back and check if there was a Harvey post you neglected to slam?

Uh... I was just saying I LIKED Cadbury, actually - just not this one specific story - and, if you'll recall, I actually had some quite complimentary things to say about Hot Stuff. Anyway, yes, I'm pretty down on Harvey, but how is that any different from what the rest of this community does? There's never been an issue of All-Star Batman and Robin posted that wasn't greeted with near-universal roars of disdain mixed with blissful cries of 'oh, the crack!'. Likewise, there hasn't been an issue of Blue Beetle posted (that I've read) that wasn't greeted with squeals of glee, or a piece of Liefeld's 'artwork' that wasn't... well, you get the picture. This community is remarkably consistent with its opinions, and so, in the case of Harvey, am I. I'm not knocking anyone else's opinions on the subject - people are perfectly free to agree with me, as they should be, and as they do, and I can often see their point - but I feel that I have a perfect right to express my own, as everyone else does.
