An unusual piece of Bill Sienkiewicz commercial art... (And some Perez Titans)
I came across this years ago on holiday in France, and only just found it again whilst spelunking through several strata of old boxes in my flat.

The Signpost Up Ahead: Your Next Stop.....

Rarely seen, although probably well known since they're mentioned by name on wikipedia, here are the first two published works by comics veteran (and Hollywood newbie) Frank Miller.

SERGIO ARAGONES, World's Most Prolific Cartoonist

Sometime or other, we should do a Sergio Aragones week here on S_D_II.
Until then, here's a little follow up from the "Aragones destroys DC" post by parusmajor.
This double-parody of Captain Marvel & Dial "H" for Hero is an unused feature from the cancelled PLOP! comic that somehow got recycled into DC's fanzine as a space filler.
The image above is from the same issue, and it's actually caricatures of Bill Gaines and Joey Orlando. Legend has it that they really did eat enough to keep three waiters running nonstop.

Rorschach’s Journal (On a Boring Night)
Idle chatter. Teeth shining behind false masks of pleasantries. The dim insanity held barely checked behind their eyes. Their every twitch screaming. Screaming for release. Screaming for a cease to this mundane existence, plagued with the disrespect and wasteful edicts of the new Kings. 327 she calls. It is my number. I take my Whopper and leave. The streets are my table. The sins of man are my condiments. Criminals are my napkin. She forgot pickles.

Justice is dead.

The rest is here.

Sergio Aragones Destroys DC
I don't remember ever seeing this posted here or on the old s_d, so I thought I'd post it.

This 40-page comic is from the late 1990s and it's called "Sergio Aragones destroys DC". It was written by Mark Evanier and illustrated by Sergio Aragones. Nine full-page scans and additional panels behind the cut.

When Wondy was Awesome, part 10 (Battle for the Godwave)
After Byrne, Wondy passed into the hands of Eric Luke. For the most part Luke's run was mediocre and unremarkable, a result of him overusing his big new villain and seeming a bit more interested in the trappings of the character than Diana herself - this is the Wonderdome era, where her invisible plane becomes her floating sky castle and ends up as significant to many of her victories as her own abilities are. But one thing he did do right was the truly awesome GodWar arc, in which (intermittently) spectacular art, fascinating mythology, and the only canon romance for Diana that has actually *worked* combined into one of my favorite Wondy stories ever.

High page count on this one, guys. You have been warned. )

Next time: Diana takes on the Justice League, does battle with a dragon, and looks really, really pretty.

PAD clarification
[info]heeha_tag posted a clarification from PAD, and I'm going to relay it to all of you.

"Well, the last time I was over there it was made abundantly clear that I wasn’t welcome, so I’m not going to make the mistake of going over there and saying this. But feel free to post the following in response:

The position espoused is not remotely correct. I have EXPLICITLY said that I have no problem with “snippets.” A few panels here, a page there. Anything that remotely falls under the realm of fair use is of no concern. And the comment about wanting people to consult with me over reproducing “even small portions” of my work is, again, 180 degrees away from what I said.

What I had said was that–giving a for-instance–if people wanted to produce LARGE amounts (such as the 50% that was reproduced of X-Factor) of work to which I own the copyright (such as Fallen Angel) that they but had to approach me and we could likely work something out. Here I was trying to put forward an example of how I’d be willing to work with Scans regarding work where I have the legal option to make that call (unlike that Marvel work) and it’s being twisted and distorted to make me come across as uncooperative. I really can’t fathom it."

The ban on PAD, just so we're all clear, isn't about blaming PAD for anything. Understandably we're a bit nervous about having his work on SD, and we've received negative attention for the posts that were made after the migration. When [info]rabican and I started talking about a creator rights clause in our rules, it was both to give writers and artists an easy out, and a way to protect the community. It's not about targeting people as poor sports, or bad fans.

PAD: I do apologize for mistaking your words regarding permission to post. Some of that misunderstanding comes down to terminology. Coming from SD as I do, a snippet would be more than a panel, or a page.

The ban will stay in place for now, but this is something we should talk about as a community. I encourage you guys to share your views, but please do so civilly, and with attention to all the issues involved.

Why I Love Carrie Kelly, part 1
I don't like Frank Miller. I don't really even like The Dark Knight Returns. Much. Yet Carrie Kelly has been my default icon for, like, ages. Wherefore then do I like her so much?

Actually,  I'm not entirely sure. But what's NOT to like about her?

First of all, I apologize for the quality of the scans. This is my first attempt trying to scan from a trade and I've obviously failed pretty miserably. I respect those of you who can actually accomplish it all the more now.

Also, spoiler warning for those of you who haven't read TDK.

Okay. That's all for now. I'm being kicked off the computer.

Also: I'm kind of confused by the tagging system. Is there any database for official tags? I hope I did this right.

Marvel Adventures: Avengers # 3
Five pages and a panel. This is the issue that starts off with the Avengers watching an old propaganda film about Captain America, and of course they can't do it quietly. It was on s_d way back.

I don't like Insane Journal, so I'm putting them on my LJ with the solitary panel here.

"So if something cool happens, then you did it, and if it's really lame, the movie guys put it in. Right."

Crystar #11
Title: Crystar, Crystal Warrior #11 (Marvel, 1985, 40 pages)
Story/Art: Jo Duffy/Ricardo Villamonte

Yes, I bought this on purpose. You wind up with stuff like this in your longboxes when you go through that phase of buying ANYTHING that has a favorite character in it.

Crystar. Comic-book tie-in to a toyline that never even rated a cartoon. It's 80's sci-sword and sorcery -- two factions vying for control of a planet. Good guys are crystal, bad guys are magma. It lasted for all of eleven issues. The big guest stars for the final issue? Alpha Flight.

Quality, right? But at least it has one of the sillier dimensional-transport scenes I've ever seen in a book.

11 dial-up unfriendly scans and a few panels beneath the cut.

Is that a Quebecois in your dimensional pocket, or are you just happy to see me? )

And they all lived happily ever after or something, albeit with the three Alphans still stranded on Crystillium at the end of it all.

So what weird, crack-tastic stuff do you own just because a favorite character of yours has a guest-shot in it?
