The Death Patrol (by Jack Cole)
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Nobody takes death in comic books very seriously. Honestly, nobody should.

It is long comic book tradition to die--until a writer in need resurrects you. (Or the just restart the whole you storyline in a universe breaking way. No, I'm not bitter.). So long that even in the 1930s people weren't taking things seriously.

One of the first features of Military Comics was The Death Patrol. It really takes confidences in your skill you put Death in your name.

Meet Butch the safe cracker; Gramps the pickpocket; Hank the rustler; Slick the a con artist, and millionaire Del van Dyne.

Sumire17
I've been reading scanlations from Snoopycool ever since someone posted a bit from Franken Fran back at the old s_d. They've got a bunch of awesome series - Franken Fran, Doubt, El El, Crazy Maniax, Aoi Destruction, and more.

Recently, they've started one called Sumire17, which...well, the first few pages of any given chapter do a much better job of explaining the premise than I could... I'm using chapter 5, since I'm particularly fond of how it's done.

So, let's get to it, then.... 13 page )

Remember - Snoopycool for the whole series.

Spotlight: Mirage
Spotlight: Mirage is, quite literally, the first comic book I ever bought. I thought it would be a fitting first post to S_D, too.

Until August 16th, 2008, I had subsisted on old issues and TPBs of my father's, leading me to have read most of Sandman when I was twelve, been left on a cliffhanger in Elfquest for five years, and have most of the Superhero comics I could get my paws on being Superman (usually The Death Of) and Batman. A few months before that lovely day, I had been introduced to Transformers through TFA, and had been working through the various animated series and diving into the wiki as often as I could.

And, on the 16th, I got paid for a commission I'd done for my mother, in the form of my first TF toys and this comic.

Best choice I ever made. (Until I went back a couple months later and picked up some awesome Marvel issues. Goldbug! Blaster! :D )

I encourage anyone with even a vague interest in Transformers to look up this comic. It's an interesting character study, and a definite stand-alone, unlike most of the Spotlights (though a lot of them are pretty damn shiny), a good choice for anyone who likes a bit of trippiness and depressing in their comics.

Damn right your mom drank it!
A "context is for the weak" image that needs context to work. Oy. During Phil Jimenez's run on Wonder Woman, Hippolyta was dead. Wonder Woman (Diana version) has traveled back in time to the 1940s, when Hippolyta was the Golden Age Wonder Woman (and alive, obviously). Since, in Hippolyta's subjective timeline, Diana is dead/the Goddess of Truth, Diana has to disguise herself as Miss America, a contemptorary superhero that has probably been updated by Geoff Johns and joined the JSA by now.

Everyone caught up now?

So, Miss America/Diana and Wonder Woman/Hippolyta have a team-up, Polly not knowing that Miss America is secretly her daughter...

Man, that's gonna make things awkward now that Hippolyta's resurrected.

Hippolyta: Awww, wook at the pretty kitty! I just love cats! They're so soft and furry and fun to play with!

Diana: Great Hera, mom...

Hippolyta: What? Awww, he's licking my toes...

Oldpost rebuilding, part one: CP9
I thought I'd try to help get the comm up and buzzing again by recreating some of my old scans_daily posts. Not all of them, of course, just a few of the ones I thought were good fun. In no particular order, we begin with a brief scene from One Piece, introducing the assassin group Cipher Pol Nine, who served as the main adversaries of the Straw Hats through the Water Seven and Enies Lobby arcs. They are also cracky as all hell.

Eight medium and two large images behind the cut. Read right to left.

Keepers of the Maser
This is the first thing I've actually scanned for S_D.

Frezzato's Keepers of the Maser, an Italian comic (originally published in French, I believe), that I stumbled upon at Comic-Con a couple years ago. The story is nearly inconsequential, reading sort of as a pastiche of Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, but the mixed media art is absolutely gorgeous. It's published stateside by Heavy Metal, and as one might expect from the publisher, there is the occasional naked or otherwise exposed person running about. They certainly don't dominate the story, and are quite often not meant to titillate at all (I'm looking at you, Queen of the Dwarves). They are a bit pricey, being nice oversize European-style albums, which, incidentally, makes them rather difficult to scan.

There are robots, dwarves, airships, great character designs, and giant whale-things. Fantastic visual candy all-around.

Anyway, on with the scans. )

There is a seventh volume which Frezzato wrote, but did not draw that set up the beginning of a second story, but I don't think he's pursued it further. And to be honest, without his art, the setting seems a little less rich. There's also a heftier sketchbook volume full of Frezatto's graphite preliminary work. Process is always fascinating; his is also just as gorgeous as his finished work.

Hope you enjoyed!

Marvel Romance Redux - Mice and Money

A couple of years ago, Marvel did some spoof comics around the Valentines period, getting various writers to rescript Kirby era Marvel romance comics. I was tempted to post the Peter David story, but rather than put the cat amongst the pigeons (honestly, I suspect that this community is never going to see Peter David's books ever again, is it?), I decided to post novelist Joe R. Lansdale's short story "Mice and Money" from the "Love is a Four Letter Word" volume.

On a totally unrelated note, am I alone in finding this particular theme a bitch to read? Are the same themes available here as they are on LJ? I'd kinda gotten used to the Scans_Daily standard. Call me old-fashioned.

So a couple of weeks ago I went to the Creationist Museum in Kentucky. It was....quite, um, informative. At the very least, it inspired me to post some of the cracky religious psuedo-science scans I saved from the old community...enjoy.

JLI #8 - Fixer-upper needs a little TLC
Found this at the local junk/comix shop today and flipping through it found myself reminded of s_d's current travails.

So, forthwith, I offer 5 pages + the cover + 1 preview image from issue #8 of Justice League International, by Keith Giffen, J.M. DeMatteis, Kevin Maguire and Al Gordon.

Question regarding scans
Do covers count in the page limit? I've got a comic I want to post that's 24 pages plus the cover, so if I wanted to post the cover along with it, would that mean I can post 8 pages plus the cover, or 8 pages including the cover?

If I get answers, you get this comic:

Superman/Madman Hullabaloo! part 1
I've said in comments before that Madman Atomic Comics (Image) is the only ongoing series on my pull-list. Mike Allred's an amazing artist, but as a storyteller he has unprecedented Silver Age sensibilities (read: crack). It's a really fun time and I'd definitely recommend everyone check it out, along with the earlier series, Madman Comics (Dark Horse) and The Atomics (AAA Pop!), both of which are available in trade.
Anyway, recently (like, earlier tonight) I finally added a second title to my pull list: Superman/Batman. I am never looking back. To celebrate, I give you the time both worlds met, 1997's three issue Superman/Madman Hullabaloo, written and drawn by Mike Allred, with colors by the lovely Laura Allred.

Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

NOTE TO MODS: Comparing the .cbr I have to my hardcopy of the issue, due to some inexplicably missing pages and a couple backup previews, it turns out the book's 32 pages, so I posted 10 pages under the cut )
