First Appearance of the Mad Hatter (and Vicki Vale!), Batman #49 (1948)|
Welcome back to my series of posts on my favorite Bat-villain, the Mad Hatter. Previously, I posted scans from a story featuring "the other Mad Hatter", a mustachioed maniac who was retconned to be an impostor playing at being the macrocephalic menace we've come to know. But now, let's go back to the Golden Age to see the origin of the "real" Jervis Tetch. I was surprised to learn that this story not only introduced the Hatter, but also Bruce Wayne's long-time
Lois Lane ripoff lady friend Vicki Vale as well.
( 11 more scans behind the cut (and no worries, the book was 40 pages long.) )
Coming soon, the modern incarnation of the Mad Hatter - same Hat-time, same Hat-channel!

Splashing old school|
Below the cut you will find Random, silliness from golden age comics. Just a few, no hour wait to load.
I have question though. Can full scans of legally public domain comics still be posted? I assume nothing.

Stumbled across this online a few minutes ago...how could I stay bitter and disappointed when I could be making my debt post in the new headquarters, with this?

World's Finest #153, Imaginary Story: Bats vs. Supes|
So I was drafting up my second post when the comm got suspended. Fortunately it was already under the new "one-third of the comic" limit. [Mods: How's the balance between the commentary/the scans? I'm still vague on where the balance is supposed to fall.]
"The SAGA of Superman vs. Batman!"
Published November, 1963, complete with those awesome old-timey ads and one-pagers.

( page3 )
( page4 )
( page5 )
( page9 )

( Cape and Cowl Comments )
The issue finishes off with more ads, more shorts, and "The Boy Who Changed The Future!", wherein one of those omniscient 1960's computers that talks to you in punchcard binary predicts the imminent destruction of life on earth (6am, June 1, 1952--mark your calendars). But since the kid used the computer without permission, he has to keep THE END OF THE WORLD a secret lest he get into trouble, so he sets to save it himself. It takes about two pages, naturally.

Ultimate Wolverine vs The Hulk #1 and 2 (SPOILERS)|
Ok, time for some scans it looks like. In keeping with the new rules for new comics, I'm posting 4 pages out of each. I'm not crazy about using this scanner or I'd post more often, but everything comes out looking like Ernie's shirt more often than not. Ah well, what can you expect for seven bucks? Definately going to be replacing it as soon as I can afford to. Dial-uppers warning, full page scans, and a double-page spread to lead it off under the cut.

It makes him feel pretty. |
One of the newer pairings to come out of DC is Piper/Trickster, a relationship between two semi-reformed members of the Flash's rogue gallery. One interesting thing about this ship is that, unlike many slash pairings, Piper is canonically gay. However, Trickster is a hundred percent straight, completely heterosexual. After all, how could anyone but a straight man be this interested in women's underwear?

A classic I saved from the old scans_daily.
Unfortunately I only have one page and cannot find this comic to buy anywhere, although nightly I pray to my heathen Gods that they will deliver it unto me through courier mail.
So this is one page from the Caterer. Ignore the terrible font, I have been convinced by several credible sources that this is in fact unedited, and after reading about what happens later in the series, I believe it.
( All is equalized under the cut )
It's not my scan, but one from a Jeff Lint fan page.
I have a quick question, if I may be so bold. Are we just starting again or looking to rebuild? Because I can scan some Tank Girl to replace our lost archives and if people want I can also restock our Robin, Superboy, Impulse, Young Justice, Nextwave, Deadpool, Lobo, Agent X, Hellblazer, Top Ten or (older) Runaways scans. Let me know if you want something from there, they're what I have the most of (And while I don't boast having every issue, I have enough that I can usually cover requests)
If something is wrong with this post, give me a few minutes to fix it, I'm running on the assumption that that this works just like LJ, and if I'm wrong I will fix it ASAP.

Eleven Randoms Scans|
It would be a sin for us to lose our past... Eleven scans I've yanked from SD during my time there. Some are fanart, some are official scans, some are cute, some are funny. And a few feature Robins, of course.
( Actually most of these are pretty recent, but here's hoping that you have bad memories. )

*dusts off her old insanejournal*|
Yesterday morning when I first noticed s_d was gone, I thought, "Well, ain't that a kick to the head." Then I read about all the dramaz that lead up to and immediately followed it. I have some different thoughts now, but those have already been expressed better in other places by people who are not me, so I won't go into that. I will however post this single beautiful beautiful page from Thunderbolts #115

Agent X 05|
Sorry to post so close together, but I've been reading various articles about our s_d drama and after wading through various sites and their comments (some of which seem to want to take this opportunity to kick us while we're down) I found a quote from one of our more well known supporters (It's a bit long so I'm putting it behind a cut)
( Gail Simone, in our defense and two pages from Agent X #5 )
Edit: Well it was on schmevil's lj as well, but I figure it could be posted here too.

Batman Family "Dollar comic" back covers|
IJ account created, check. Joined S_D 2.0, check.
Userpic, can't find the damn thing, heck with it I'll get one later. Here we go...
The relentless stagflation of the 70's was not kind to comics. 50 cents for a 100 page super-spectacular became 60 cents, then became 60 cents for a 64 page giant, and finally 60 cents for a 48 page "giant." (back then, comic companies were actually reluctant to raise cover prices, you see). Then came the "Dollar Comic," at 80 pages for a dollar, with all-new content. But 80 pages was just too much paper to be affordable, so after only a few months of 80 page dollar comics, the page count was cut back to 64 pages.
But again, this was an era when comic publishers felt a responsibility to deliver value for your dollar, so DC eliminated all advertising from the 64 page dollar comics. 64 pages with no ads was nearly the same number of story pages as 80 pages with ads, so they could tell readers that nothing had changed except a lower printing bill for DC. And it gave the artists the opportunity to create pinups for the back cover.( Read more... )

Welcome to the NHK! Suicide, hallucinations, porn, drugs, and everything else we love about Japan!|
This is Sakurakon from LJ
I come with manga!
The title pretty much explains the series, but I'll give you a little summary from wikipedia:
Welcome to the N.H.K. revolves around the lives of several young-adults all living in or around the city of Tokyo. Many different lifestyles are shown though most of the time the story focuses on the concepts of being a hikikomori, anime otaku, and having most of the characters experience intense feelings of depression and loneliness.
The main protagonist is Tatsuhiro Satō, a university dropout entering his fourth year of unemployment. He leads a reclusive life as a hikikomori, ultimately coming to the bizarre conclusion that this happened due to some sort of conspiracy. One day just when his life seems entirely unchanging, he meets Misaki Nakahara, a mysterious girl who claims to be able to cure Tatsuhiro of his hikikomori ways.
