Frank Miller Holy Terror parody
In a way, Frank Miller has become a parody of himself so the label is almost superfluous.

Anyway, to you lucky few who have never heard of it, some years back Miller outlined his idea for a propaganda comic which was essentially Batman vs. Osama bin Laden, Holy Terror, Batman!. Yes, take a moment to goggle. You see what I meant about self-parody? It's not even fish in a barrel territory, it's more like the fish gutted itself, rolled around in lemon juice and butter then flopped into the frying pan. But dear god, when a guy sets himself up like this he's just begging the Internet to take a whack. I was going to save this parody for the new digs but I thought I'd say goodbye to 2.0 with my first ever post.

It took me years to find this sumbitch again but posting it was clearly a categorical imperative. Kant himself would have agreed with me. I have no idea who made it save for a nom de plume (Mr. Quill) and a now-defunct link thankfully archived on the Internet Archive.

Oh, and for legality, a page from one of my favourite webcomics, Gunnerkrig Court:

I swear, I was totally reading it long before Neil Gaiman got everyone else on the bandwagon. Oh, and to save you Googling time, the sentence up top says in Latin, "Pray, read, reread, work and you will find [it]" - advice for budding or exhausted alchemists.

Heh. I lied. I will reply to this one:

Why do you get so heated up in simple discussion on these boards?

Why do you see that as a bad thing? Quite frankly, the idea that I shouldn't get "heated" in any argument is one that I find offensive.

Discuss the topic without needing to resort to insulting the other person or the topic at hand.

I don't think I was insulting toward you, and I refuse to abstain from insulting TOPICS that meet with my disapproval, because I consider it MORALLY wrong to hold myself back from insulting a TOPIC.

You began this response by basically saying your argument is valid because you think the song is shit [...]

And the rest of my post that followed focused on all the ways in which it was still wrong to use the word "ironic," which renders your entire point here moot.

Be reasonable. Be respectful.

I think I have been. I did not insult any other posters or comics creators, and if I can't slag off on Alanis Morrisette or her fans on a fucking COMICS forum, then Jesus Christ, we're taking the Cult of Nice to brand-new levels.

You've misunderstood my meaning. I'm saying you often get worked up to the point that your anger overrides any points you're trying to make. This sometimes gets to the point where instead of making you're argument you go off on a tangent about how awful something else is. Heated debate versus impassioned debate

You'll make a much better and more reasoned argument if you just walk away for a while and come back to the discussion with a calmer mindset. You'll also avoid the slippery slope of devolving your arguments into insults against the person you're debating against.

I'm saying you often get worked up to the point that your anger overrides any points you're trying to make.

Except that all the points I've made in this thread are correct. What you're really saying is that, if I take some time to step back from this argument, I'll magically come to the conclusion that you're right, and I'm sorry, but no amount of time is going to make that happen. I was saying this exact same shit about Morrisette when this song first came out, years and years ago, and it's just as true now as it was then. I've already given this matter all the thought that it deserves, and this is as calm as I will ever get about this subject, as measured by the fact that so many years have passed since the first time I engaged in this debate about this song with anyone. If anything, time has only ensured that I'm MORE "heated" over this subject now than I ever was before, because of the number of times I've heard such wrong arguments in defense of this song, so if anything, taking time to step back from this debate would only make me MORE vitriolic, not less.

Thus, your advice is incorrect in just about every way that it's possible for it to be incorrect, since everything that you're suggesting would be guaranteed to accomplish exactly the opposite of what you want to have happen.

See, that wasn't so hard was it? Now you don't sound so angry, just condescending! :D

(i say this in jest, please don't hurt me!)

No no, you've completely misunderstood me. I am in no way shape or form suggesting that you should somehow come to the conclusion that I am right and you are wrong. I'm saying that two people can debate in a reasonable and respectful manner, which I do not believe is happening. I was merely suggesting something that has worked very well for me in the past, that is walking away from a topic where I got too worked up over trying to prove my point, then returning once I've calmed down. I still hold my stance, I just debate it better than I would have if I had argued in the heat of the moment.

I'm saying that two people can debate in a reasonable and respectful manner, which I do not believe is happening.

And you're wrong.

I was merely suggesting something that has worked very well for me in the past, that is walking away from a topic where I got too worked up over trying to prove my point, then returning once I've calmed down.

And because I only ever get MORE pissed off with time, then once again, I'm telling you that this would accomplish exactly the OPPOSITE of what you want to have happen, so you're wrong on this one, too.

I still hold my stance, I just debate it better than I would have if I had argued in the heat of the moment.

And I firmly believe that, if you're not arguing angry, then you're not arguing right. :)

What's really impressive about this thread is that every single argument you've made has only served to make me MORE convinced of the correctness of my position. I was actually CLOSER to agreeing with you BEFORE you tried to convince me of how right you were, which means that you really should just quit now, because if this pattern holds, then every single post you make will drive me further away from saying or doing anything that you want me to.

Yikes. Look, I really stopped caring about the original argument when you said "we're done" quite a while ago. Okay? I never really wanted to prove you wrong (it wasn't the kind of argument someone could "win"), I just wanted to explain the other point of view.

In any case, if the only responses your going to give me are "You're wrong. Everything you just said? Wrong. Opinions? Wrong." as they've been for a few posts now, then I can only assume it's not going to get any better. I shall take my own advice and bow out.

I never really wanted to prove you wrong [...]

Bullshit. You've spent the last several posts trying to convince me that I shouldn't get "heated" during an argument. Not only are you trying to convince me that my style of argument is wrong, but the fact that you're trying to do so is, in and of itself, morally wrong in my eyes.

I can only assume it's not going to get any better.

Which proves conclusively that you haven't actually been reading anything that I wrote, because I already just TOLD you that your style of argument pretty much guarantees that I will do the exact opposite of whatever you want me to do, for no other reason than that you want me to do it, so if you HAD bothered to read my posts, you wouldn't have to ASSUME anything.

I shall take my own advice and bow out.

God, I hope so, but I sincerely doubt it, since I suspect you won't be able to resist another reply where you insist that I'm misunderstanding you.

Dude, dont we have better things to discuss in drunken foaming-mouth rage than a song that asks questions that are answered by "No. It isn't? Like porn? Or BND? Or BND porn?
I mean, jeez.
And isn't the area that concerns the meaning and usage of words called "Semantics", while grammar concerns instead the rules of constructing sentences and... Wait, PORN, BND PORN! Ok. THat is better.
