And she stabs Reactron with a pen! (He knocks out Chris and Kara by smashing their heads together and she yells at him, and he gets all telling her she's never met a real man before, and she's like "I have, but you're not it" *staaaab*) and now she's going to tell the world the TRUTH! So that made me happy.

I've heard "The pen is mightier than the sword" but Lois with a pen managing what two empowered Kryptonians couldn't? Can't see that coming over well.

Eh, I prefer Joe Pesci's pen stabbing scene from Casino (at 1:10):

It doesn't STOP him or anything. It just annoys him and he bats her away. And she stabbed him in the cheek, where his suit didn't cover him, plus he wasn't expecting her to do anything. She doesn't manage anything "Chris and Kara couldn't" but I still like the moment because it shows that Lois doesn't take shit and will defend herself. Also, it was nice to see her upset over Reactron hurting Chris and even Kara.

I know Chris is technically of age, but he's technically not of age.

I wonder if he will transform into the real Nightwing?

Depending on continuity "Nightwing" is either species of Kryptonian nocturnal bird (just as a "flamebird" originally was), or the only known name of a legendary hero (a son who was cast out of his noble house, and became a protector of the underdg regardless). Does it have a new interpretation now?

Can't say that ANOTHER firebird wearing heroine (possibly with god-delusions) is doing much to impress me as a novel idea.

IIRC the birds were named after mythical deities like Rao. Since the destruction of Krypton the religious guild has become more active and I guess revived the worship of the Flamebird and Nightwing gods along with Rao. For some reason Thara has had vision of Flamebird all her life and the guild found that out and performed some ritual on her that made her realize she is the Flamebird's avatar. Then some psychic connection between her and Chris sparked, which made them realize he is Nightwing.

Well, with a name like Flamebird...what else are ya gonna have her powers be?

I still think Flamebird should have been Linda, it would have been the perfect way to bring her back...

Funny you should say that, DC's Russian heroine who took the name Firebird as a member of "Soyuz" (Sort of Soviet Teen Titans) was a telepath, who deliberately chose a name which had bugger all to do with her powers so people wouldn't suspect what her powers were... of course, the fact that her team-mates were named after a water nypmh (Rusalka), wind-djinn (Vikhor), ice demon (Morozko) and thunder god (Perun) who all had powers to match their codenames, showed that it clearly wasn't an idea she wanted to take too far.

Shoehorning Linda into another deity role concerning Kryptonians is one more complication she doesn't need. PD convoluted her story enough. She doesn't need to be a protoplasmic mockery of Lana Lang from an alternate universe merged with a dying girl stabbed during a Satanic sacrifice to become an Earth-born angel of fire who married and had a child with the pre-Crisis Superman, but not really and then become a goddess worshiped by aliens on a deceased world thousands of years ago.

You realize the origin is only that complicated because you made it that way. Her previous origin was she was a Supergirl construct who merged with a dying girl in order to save her life, and became an earthborn angel with flame powers. Then she was just Linda Danvers with Superman's powers and Tk.

If you introduce her as Flamebird, all you have to understand is "This was the Supergirl with flame powers. Now she's Flamebird.

I'm not saying I'd have wanted her to have the same origin as Thara, but that I originally thought that Flamebird was going to be Linda and that would have been a good way to bring her back, and I still think it would have been better than having Thara have almost the same powers redundantly.

You realize you just repeated the same origin I gave, minus the Superman marriage.

And no, so long as the character has a backstory it's always going to be there. You're basically asking everyone to just jam their fingers in their ears and yell "LALALALALALA! Linda's origin isn't ridiculous or convuluted!" But it's there.

Linda being Flamebird would be a joke. Just one more thing on a pile of things that Linda is/was, which was a protoplasmic Lana Lang dead girl Earth born angel of fire. I don't think you need to tack more on to that.

You're missing that there's no need whatsoever for "Flamebird," in this context, to mean anything other than "What the former Supergirl is now calling herself." The whole forgotten-god-of-Krypton nonsense would be a problem to tack onto Linda, sure, obviously. There isn't, however, any reason whatsoever to have invented it in the first place. "Flamebird" is known to be the name of an old Kryptonian hero. Linda's powers are appropriate to someone called "Flamebird," and Linda hangs with kryptonians. Her old name is no longer available to her.

Absolutely nothing would make more sense than her picking up that name when she comes out of retirement.

[info]manofbats

What would make more sense would be to never ever bring Linda out of retirement, ever. Don't even kill her, just forget her. That makes more sense than anything ever did in the history of forever.

I like the new Flamebird. She's the first character with that name who is worth keeping around.

Actually, Matrix separated from Linda a year or two before the end of the PAD series and Linda stopped being an Earth born angel when they separated, so at most Linda is girl-who-used-to-be-merged-with-protoplasmic-Lana-Lang-and-once-was-an-Earth-born-angel. Yes she has a convoluted backstory but no one bothers to mention that Superman used to be a blue energy being or that Spider-Woman was once evolved from a spider, so I don't see why Linda's out-of-date convoluted backstory should hold her back any more than any other superhero's.

Wait wait wait. I am sooo behind the times now.

Is this Chris, the child they were taking care of son of Zod Chris?

God damn, comics hate children. Guess he's another one to add to the magically-somehow-aged-to-adulthood tally.

Yeah, I'm sure they made up some bullshit technobabble reason he is no longer a child.

But the real reason is that comic writers don't want to write children, so he fell prey to Babies in Microwaves Syndrome and was suddenly aged to adulthood.

He ages normally in the Phantom Zone, whereas everyone else is frozen in time. When Chris is outside the Phantom Zone years can pass by for him. His story isn't really finished. Hell it could turn out like Big, with his debilitating growth spurts getting fixed and setting him back to his proper age.

It would be singularly creepy to turn him back into a little kid after having a steamy romance.

Not that comics never go creepy (Hello Ms. Marvel and "son"), but I guess I'll have to give up on Superman and Louis ever getting to experience a family dynamic for more than a handful of issues.

Ah well, it was really cute while it lasted.

*Sigh* I don't like this flamebird. It's very Jean Grey. Thara herself is not bad but doesn't do much for me as she is just another Kryptonian, but the fact that she is an avatar of a god Flamebird means she is unlikely to give up that gig anytime soon, which means Bette Kane will not get that codename back (and I liked the motivation for why she was Flamebird - it was at least original and different), which also means that Dick Grayson won't get his name back :(

Avatars of gods... meh, so they're more powerful than Superman? how is that gonna work for the storytelling? I'd like my Krypton and Kryptonians more about (pseudo) science and less about gods and reincarnations :(

Greg Rucka said at a con when asked what Betty would do now that there's another Flamebird out there said (basically): "I don't think Betty cares that there's somebody else calling themselves Flamebird" implying that Bette would just keep calling herself that regardless - and since he's using her in 'Tec with Kate he would know.
