Now THIS is the kind of Magneto I like to read about. I hate it when writers whine about how he's lost his edge and depict him as a brutal maniac - that's NOT WHO HE IS. Magneto, at his best, is a conflicted man who has chosen to embrace the darker side of Xavier's past - someone once compared Prof. X and Magneto to Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, and I think that's a good analogy. Magneto believes in helping his people through any means necessary - he doesn't necessarily believe that the ends always dictate the means, but he's not going to hold back if something morally questionable is required, either. He can be either kind or callous, a teacher or a butcher, a man of peace or a leader of war - you never know quite WHAT he's going to do, because he has a good side and a bad side, and both pursue the same ends. That's what makes him so fascinating as a character. He's not Dr. Doom with magnetic powers, he's a loose cannon who may fight either against the heroes or by their side at any given moment.
